So how good is the Big One at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, and what makes it a complicated roller coaster? In this video, I'll be talking about why the Big One is still my favourite UK roller coaster, why the claims of it being a monorail with no airtime are unjustified and also taking a look into some of the technical aspects of this coaster including three trains, the transfer track, how the weather impacts on it and much more.

My favourite coaster...every time I see her it’s a sensory sensation that I never get tired of as it is tied into so many memories, people and times of significance in my life. I couldn’t even begin to have an objective opinion and you know...I’m ok with that 😌

Get the big one on a calm, still, nighttime ride, after it has been running all day, and it absolutely flies round. You get multiple big airtime moments on these sort of rides, and the sense of speed is incredible. I think my best ride on it was on the last late night fireworks event of the 2019 season. It really is a ride that varies massively with your experience of it. I used to be in the 'meh' camp, but now I absolutely love it. The GP love it too, it remains the most iconic and well loved rollercoaster in the country I would say.

when a mate rode it a few years before i did back in the 90s... he described it as an excellent first drop, then a fun-ish 2 min scenic ride back to the station around the park. And still holds - the anticipation and the views from the lift hill, the intensity of that drop in which ever seat you happen to be in (tho that back left seat is my personal fave for max thrill of being pulled down the drop) it's not my top ride at the park... but equally, it's one i'll be disappointed if i don't get to ride while are the park

Big one is a unique hyper coaster IMO, it is like a 200ft wooden coaster due to it having more laterals than airtime and the first drop and the whole ride slams you around which is super fun.

Personally I really enjoy roughness in a roller coaster because it actually makes it more forceful and makes you feel like the ride is much more action packed. I despise new age roller coasters like the forceless new B&M's being built or the intamin blitzs in their animations.

This is a great coaster. Simple. People just don't know a good thing when they have it. It's not just the first drop that's a thrill, it's getting up there. I rode this yesterday for the first time. It was the hottest day so bad timing but couldn't be helped. We got into the queue at 9:35am, and the trains were testing at that stage. Then they stopped, so we waited. The testing restarted with one staff memberin 2 trains, then an empty train was left on the lift hill for half an hour. The heat was stifling, no announcements or information from the operations team and still we waited. We were 3 trains from the top of the queue so we didn't want to leave the queue. It finally started running at 11:10. Everyone was exhausted with the heat by then but at least we got to ride. We rode mid-train and it was very fast and the views were amazing but I will say I was hugely disappointed as I experienced almost zero airtime. Maybe it was our mid-train position or because it was an early train. The operations were crap and I think that set the tone. It was down for most of the rest of the day then, maybe from the crazy heat, so at least we got to ride. What a pity. I'd re-ride if there was a walk-on but not otherwise. Once does the trick, we're back again today but Icon deserves the re-rides.

Scott, get that monorail comment out of the bin now lol 😂 One of the only reasons that might convince me to try riding it was that comment as it makes it seem less terrifying (whether it’s true or not lol) 😂😂😂 Despite never being brave enough to ride it though I do have a lot of love for this coaster. I can’t imagine the Blackpool skyline without it even though I am old enough to remember the days before it was built lol 😬 Maybe if some gorgeous hunk of a man offered to hold my hand I might be convinced. Earlier this year I went to blackpool pleasure beach for the 1st time and for the 1st ride I did the big one in the front row and as soon as the ride was over I knew it was my favourite UK rollercoaster. I did it 10 times that day. One of the times I did back row and it was awful I wouldn't recommend anyone to do it and if your only gonna be able to do it once then always do front row. Back 1994/95. Brilliant coaster. If you've been to any other decent park in the world, you realise it's average at best. You sometimes get a decent ride on the back row, vary rarely. After the first drop, the ride is a complete bore. Zero airtime and nothing focreful. After Icon flopped, i.e. hardly increased attendances I very much doubt you'll see another above average coaster at the park in our lifetimes. Nothing worth going for these days unless you're a BPB enthusiast.

@@yourexperienceguide Hopefully with the park being closed so long, it will have a resurgence once it opens. Otherwise it's in serious trouble. Especially seeing there's plans for a rival up the road in the future. The park needs at least 2/3 new thrill/dark rides desperately.

I rode this first the first time in 10 years on 28/07/23. I went in it 4 times. Once on the front and three times on the back . In my opinion it’s the best coaster in the UK! Everything about it is amazing. On the back is by far the best place to sit as it rips you around and is pretty rough which I personally love. On the front it seems to just cruise around but offers amazing views. The nostalgia value and views it offers make it the ultimate 90’s thrill

Great vid and a balanced considered opinion. I can't wait to get back up to ride it! I would like a B&M hyper AND for Big One to stay, and I don't think all this talk about UK never getting another hyper because we already have one is valid. A B&M would offer totally different experience and the obvious place would be Thorpe Park. They have the space at the back, the height allowances and there is nothing like it in the south, so I say bring it on. I think having a classic arrow at PB is important as they are becoming increasingly rare, plus all the coasters there are from different moments of history which is what makes the place so special.

I can see the Big One on a clear day from just up the Road from me in Blackrod. I’ve got to admit, I’ve never been on it as that first drop scares me. Lost my nerve with rides when I left high school in 1993. I spent some fantastic times on BPB back in the late 80’s early 90’s when I was a teenager and rode everything, the Grand National being my favourite and I spent ages in the winter of 93/94 watching the Big One being built. It really is iconic ( no pun intended) and is now as much a part of Blackpool as the tower.

I was disappointed with this coaster. The first drop is, of course, awesome. But, after that, it's just gentle gradients - no big drops or airtime after that. (Shambala has 2 more drops after the 1st one). It's a good ride, but a little boring for me. Imo.
@yourexperienceguide
@yourexperienceguide 2 жыл бұрын
Shambhala was built 18 years later with newer tech but for me doesn't have the same thrill factor, it's a little bit boring. It has more airtime than the Big One but give me ejector airtime like it has on its speed hill over the floaty airtime it has for the rest of its layout. I discussed airtime in my video, the Big One doesn't lack in it as much as people say.
