How Good Was Barry Sanders?
Barry Sanders' Detriot Lions were electrifying in the early 90s, reaching the NFC Championship game in 1991. However, while Barry lived a football life, how good was the 1988 college football Heisman Trophy winner and 1997 2000 yard rusher NFL MVP? We have all seen the incredible jukes, runs, and highlights with the Lions and the Oklahoma State Cowboys, but why did he retire at 31 and was he truly good enough to claim Walter Payton's rushing title? Barry Sanders had the best moves ever & that's where it stops. How can you be the best RB of all time when you're taken out of red zone situations & was the minus yardage king? Please explain? With all those minus yards he put his team in horrible situations dancing around too much. Then bam he breaks away & pads his stats & at the end of the game he has his 100 yards, 5 yards per carry but his team lost, mainly bc of the way he ran. I never said specifically, he was the best ever, greatest of all. . and I think that's a tough one to call. I said he was consired as one of the best ever and certainly belongs on that list. I went to the same high school he did and played with his brother. So I'm a fan. And he certainly didn't get much help from the organization he played for. If he'd have played one year on a super contender, he'd of broke big records but that doesn't matter. My point, in the comments that were made is that he carries himself well, keeps his composure, never complains, nor makes a fool of himself when he scores, not in any case. To him, football is just a game. One that can consume a person. Like it seemed to in the end with Walter Payton. . not just the greatest running back, but the best "player" to ever step on a football field. Emmett Smith has more yards but I'd take Earl Campbell over him. Even Eric Dickerson over Smith. And OJ Simpson broke 2000 yards in a 14 game season and that's a record you'll never see broken. Hell I think Marcus Dupree was better than most any running back that ever played which was basically just playing in college or before he blew his knee early on, in the USFL. So there's several players considered at least by some as the greatest rb ever. It's all a matter of opinion. There are no set rules as to what the barometer is for holding such a title. It's impossible to compare guys from different eras, from different teams, who are different style runners, etc. You can go off stats, or championships won, longevity, the most 'whatever'. Just for a player to be in the conversation, certainly says they are on another level that only a handful will ever experience.

@@biggalaxy9102 You obviously didn't watch him throughout his career. Me being from Detroit and a lifelong Lions fan, I watched him every Sunday and Thanksgiving. He lost yardage, because he ran behind the Lions Offensive Line and most of the time, defenders where in the backfield when Barry was getting handed the ball. Trust a believe that running backs don't jook in the backfield for the hell of it. He had to jook, because he was running from a defender or two that was already in the backfield with him.

About ten years after Sanders retired, one of the Detroit sports writers finally got him to stop and give him an interview. Barry finally allowed that as his 9th season wound down, he looked around the locker room and realized all his friends on the team were gone. Retired, traded, cut. He just decided it wasn't going to be fun anymore to play without his support buds around him. For him, football was still a game, in the same sense it is for all of us when we're ten years old. It was how you played with your friends.

But no one thinks Sanders would have kept up his pace for 5 more years, least of all Sanders since he retired when he did. Also, we can't take the "he might have" arguments into account because the fact is, he didn't. Playing that game Terrell Davis or Gayle Sayers would be in the GOAT conversation. Anyway, saying Smith is the GOAT doesn't make Sanders less great. He had an incredible career from HS thru college and the NFL. Nothing can take away from that.

Oh man. I had the privilege of seeing Barry live 2 times at the Silverdome growing up. Each game he went for 100+ yards & a long TD run Barry is & will always be the best RB of all time. His elusiveness, strength, balance, vision & ability to make 1/2/3 guys miss behind the LOS & then break it for a 1st down or long run/TD will never be seen again Hell, he could make a 1yd gain or 2yd loss look so pretty lol It’ll never sit right with me that Emmit is the all time leading rusher in NFL history. He was a great back don’t get me wrong but it helps when you have the best OL in football at the time plus other HOFs like Aikman, & Irvin…Barry never had a QB (Kramer had one good season same thing with Mitchell) From 96-99 Barry was the Lions. Ppl who don’t know how good the Lions were from 91-95, I’ll elaborate lol The two up and coming teams of the early 90s were the Lions & Cowboys. In the divisional round in 91 the Lions beat the piss out of the Cowboys 38-6 before they were smoked in the NFC Championship Game by a HOF loaded Redskins team led by Mark Rypien & Ernest Byner Now, we all know how things went but if the Lions had found a good QB during that period of time (91-95) things may have been much different. Ik ik. And if your aunt had a d**k she’d be your uncle…I get it lol But they had talent everywhere & on both sides of the ball. Barry. Moore. Perriman. Spielman. Blades. Lomas Brown. etc etc. Barry said one day late in his career he looked around the locker room & most all of his friends were gone…so he hung up his cleats (via fax lol)

The greatest of all. 25 years later and he is still without a doubt in my mind the greatest RB of all. 5 different 300+ yard games, 37 TD's and 2,700 yds in his last year at OSU, 18,000 yards and over 100 TD's in 10 NFL years. Nobody really compares. He got 21,000 yds and 150 td's in 11 years lol.

I was lucky to meet Barry Sanders after Bedlam 2004 at a night club in Oklahoma City. I am a Sooner and a Vikings fan, yet he is in my opinion the greatest running back ever. He was so low key it was cool I shook his hand and told him I hated his teams but think he's the best and he treated me so well it left a great impression on me.

Dude he's my favorite athlete of all time. I still have his throw back jersey washed to death from 1996. I used to try to cut and juke like him playing any type of running game as a kid tag, football capture the flag etc. I was in awe of his ability and his humility and humbleness makes him even better. You are the real rushing leader. Emmitt Smith is a one of a kind talent no doubt, but if I had a 400 lb plus offensive line for close to a decade, I probably be in contentention also. Love you Barry, Iam just a working class white boy from Baltimore but you always were hero and your personality is inspiring. Thank you for competition and the memories. I hope other generations get inspired like I did.

I’ve been lucky to see and chat with him a few times at the golf course across where I grew up here in metro Detroit. He loves his golf and I can say he is as humble off the gridiron as he is on it. Sure, I was bitter when he retired, what many of us consider early, but this guy was never rude, mean, arrogant, or self-absorbed. My dad was a sports anchor from 88/89 until about 1994 and he has said the same thing. He and Pavel Datsyuk redefined their craft here in Detroit and we’ve been blessed for one of the best RB’s ever to play in front of our own eyes. These highlights give me goosebumps today and I’m now 35.

Barry Sanders decided to retire just before he broke Walter "Sweetness" Payton's career rushing record because he knew Sweetness while he was battling for his life and he refused to play because he wanted to leave that record in Walter Payton's name. He could arguable play for another 7-10 years and would have blown Walter's record out of the water and the record he would still be intact and probably never gotten broken.

When your talent speaks for itself, there's no need to showboat in the end zone, something Barry never did and video supports that statement. There was no spiking the ball, touchdown dance, or in your face taunting. It was on to the next play for him. Todays NFL players might want to take that in. You see, that is what a true "role model" is in sports. He played for love of the game until he didn't love it anymore and retired. He spoke ill of NO ONE and was thankful for every opportunity he had while at the same time, off the field, gave back to so many in Detroit on his own time and dime. I'm a Bears fan; and Walter is the greatest, but Barry was the most elusive back I ever saw. Walter couldn't do what Barry did. He was amazing. Nor are all on the list because of the total rushing yards during their careeers. These running backs are on my list because even when everyone in the stadium and at home knew they were going to get the ball, they still could not be stopped! Ridiculously good. His college and pro career spanned Middle school to early college years for me and he was the Michael Jordan of the NFL to me. If he was playing you watched because something you NEVER saw in football would happen with him playing.
