Rui Costa was amongst the very best of a now all too rare breed.
Rui Costa helped define a decade few will forget. The artistic Alfacinha, with slicked hair and rolled-down socks, who brought the fun-factor to an Italian top flight renowned for its defensive discipline.
Rui Costa was everything a number ten should be.
He could beat opponents with an almost arrogant ease, a feint of the body or swivel of the hips enough to send challenges by the wayside as he skipped through oncoming traffic.
His touch and technique - honed in the confines of a futsal pitch - were nonchalantly delightful, always delicate as the ball approached his possession, but often devastating when allowing it to leave.
Rui Costa’s moniker of ‘The Prince of Florence’ was well deserved as he rivalled the likes of Roberto Baggio, Zinedine Zidane, and later Francesco Totti, for the title of Serie A’s pre-eminent playmaker.

Probably the most underrated number 10 of all time. This guy was incredible. A quick highlight reel on KZbin will show anyone how good this guy was. Fast, great technique, excellent dribbler, constantly on the ball and taking control of games, he had it all as a no. 10. He just wasn't fortunate to be in a great team for most of his career. He was literally one of the best players in the world and yet never really challenged for the Scudetto or the Champions League because of how competitive Serie A was and how hard it was to get UCL places.

Portuguese domestic league is still very good. But in the late 80's and initial 90's was the best era. Pure class players playing most of their entire careers in top national clubs like Porto, Benfica, Sporting, Boavista, Braga..etc No transfers to Europe. Imagine that.

I have a small add to all this about Rui Costa in those days , Apart from his technique but effective , and his passing and shot on long distance targets, he add two small hidden attributes that defined him as he was , and excellent attacking midfielder , Vision he could read the game in a split second and intelligence, allie that to the way he changed pace during his attacking moves and his endurance and strength and now add all the obvious attributes like skill shot and passing precision and you have the perfect cocktail on an attacking midfielder in fact there was another player that I said once was similar in every aspect , Kaka from Brazil, they were so similar even in style and moving on the pitch !

Rui much more continuous throughout the game, the other capable of a flash but discontinuous in the rest of the match. Much better Rui, a real number 10 (who for me is the pure attacking midfielder) which was able of repeated assists/scoring goals. Impressive player, one out of the 3 bests I have ever seen. Unfortunately, in Italy today we are light years away from that high-quality football.

Rui Costa can walk into any football first team and shine. He is so good that you can even build a team around him. To compare him with Zidane is not easy, both are not exactly the same kind of player. Of course if we compare them based on silverware and accolades, then Zidane wins. Either player can win you tournaments but Costa’s situation is a lot tougher because his teams don’t have that many great players.

Better than Zidane? I m huge fan of Kaka and Rui Costa, probably both are in my top 3. I only witnessed Rui Costa during Milan era, i cant talk when i was at Fiorentina. This is a pure playmaker, the real no.10. Zidane often plays as left offensive midfielder (Real Madrid, even in some French team matches...) Zidane is overall better player, he is pure legend, no doubt about it but what makes Rui Costa truly special: his ability to give the tempo, controlling the midfield as nobody, he takes his responsibility, always goes forward on the pictch, keeping the ball with such elegant ball control. Zidane was different, his first control touch is insane, he keeps controlling the ball a bit less than Rui Costa, i think Zidane was less ''dominant'' playmaker while Rui Costa acts like the technical leader on the pitch. What i meant Rui Costa is a bit like Iniesta, these guys are capable of dribbling, keep controlling the ball and then pass, Zidane is more balanced, sometimes he gives the pass, sometimes he would dribble or keep the ball. Anyway dont get me wrong even if Rui Costa was one of my idols, Zidane is the best of two but they are different kind of playmaker and last not but least, Rui Costa and Kaka were really different, Kaka was very paced playmaker, no-one plays like him. I liked Rui Costa during C1 2003 campaign, he was outstanding, brilliant, the real maestro of that team (AC Milan won C1 this year)

Thank you. Yeah I'm portuguse and they may say I'm biased, but one thing I know for sure about football, is that history doesn't remember players "objectively". No way would Zidane get the status he has if he didn't play for the Real Madrid galacticos ... or if he played for Portugal. Zidane is an AMAZING player. But Rui Costa is not inferior, period.

As good as he was as a pure 10 I always viewed more suited to play deeper as a pure central midfielder with a number 10 playstyle. Someone capable of doing much more than just create opportunities which appears to be the way people look at his performances from a modern perspective and call him inconsistent. He had exceptional vision that few players in history have had when you consider he could dribble with his head up and be able to pick a pass from 20 to 40 yards at any moment, and the weight of pass... well that was something else entirely. Zidane started out as a central midfielder that was pushed up the pitch for his genius. Rui Costa started out as a pure 10 attacking midfielder and wasn't allowed to play deeper really until that Milan side that deployed first Rivaldo then Kaka in the advanced playmaker role. By then they already had too many heads for not many hats. Pirlo was an up and coming elite deep lying playmaker of his own and they had Seedorf too! I always wondered what he could have done and won had he moved to Spain or even England around 1997 or 98. Had he gone to England at that time people would have a very different opinion of him I'm sure nowadays. He would of instantly become one of the top 5 if not top 3 most skilled players in the Premier League quite easily

That is a really interesting point and absolutely true. Media is also pushing that narrative, they were pushing Messi vs Ronaldo rivalry for 10+ (they were best players in those years but also some other players deserved Ballon d'or in that period) now they are already pushing rivalry between Halland and Mbappe.
