As a Chinese NBA fan, we valued Francis a lot, when Yao was in his early years in NBA, Francis put him under his wing and helped him a lot. The most recognizable one is that in a game where Yao was involved in a fight with Amar'e Stoudemire, which at the time Yao was still very very skinny, Francis as a 6" guard just run towards Stoudemire as a 6"10' forward and tried to stop him from the fight to protect Yao. He earned a lot of respect that day from Chinese NBA fans

Mark 2909 Don't have an official source on this, but a few calculations I've seen have the average NBA career between 4-6 years. There's a lot of guys that are out of the league quickly if they don't develop into productive players for their team; fans just never know most of them because they're on the bench. Kwame likely had more opportunities to develop than most due to a team investing their top pick to get him, but there's also plenty of first rounders and lottery picks that don't make it a decade in the NBA.

@Alfred Hicks nah bro, he had what I would consider common handle for any PG. He wasn't dribbling through traps or had a bunch for of counter moves. Imo him and AI had overrated ball handle. They had one or two go to moves. Dudes like Kyrie, kemba, Zeke, CP3 etc are players I consider with elite handle just to name few. Kenny Anderson, Jamal crawford etc have a way deeper bag of moves with the dribble. Not saying the franchise was trash he was solid overall but he damn sure wasn't Russell Westbrook with Kyrie ball handle.

We need a top 10 list first before we start saying where he belongs. Francis had moments, but I think other point guards were more consistent. Even looking at raw talent alone in their prime he might not be top 10. Maybe top 20 which is still respectable. There’s so many different types of guards it’s hard to measure a good passer against a good scorer. Steve Nash might be the best overall passer/scorer combo. He’s like a 12 passer and 10 scorer. Curry is like a 12 scorer and 8 passer.

Another thing that played a huge role in his decline that I don’t see/hear mentioned enough is definitely his wear and tear. From the 99-00 season (his rookie year) to the 05-06 season, he averaged a whopping 38.7 minutes per game. To put it into perspective, Bradley Beal led the league in minutes per game last season with 36.9 MPG, and Francis averaged more than that over his ENTIRE CAREER (37.6 MPG).

There was another fact that the reason for his unhappiness was when they traded his good friend cuttino mobley to the sacramento kings, he became upset. Steve' Franchise' was a athletic combo type of point guard that was ball dominate whom made the double crossover dribble move look so fluid and had a lethal hezi in his prime. He just had alot off the court issues that derailed him from maintaining top tier status.
@KWCline916 жыл бұрын
When I think of Steve Francis aside from the talent he brought, two things come to mind. 1) Vancouver made the mistake of drafting Francis. Not because he told them not to. But rather it was that the Grizzlies really had nowhere to out him after drafting Bibby, which he said in the video. If you had gotten someone else, then it could've worked out. But by picking Francis, you have two players that pose as dual-threat guards even though Francis was more athletic. 2) The trade to Houston was great. But the unfortunate thing about the trade was the timing. Things weren't gelling with Pippen and Barkley, who was also retired and Hakeem was near the end of his career. Had all that been done earlier like in 1996 or 1997, he would've complimented the Rockets to greater heights and they could've reached another NBA Finals in the 1990's. But in the end, the old players went out and then came new talent that was good, but never elite like the Lakers.

The only thing I remember about his Orlando days is that he pushed Bryant after Bryant dunked on Howard in Howard's rookie year.

SF was the T-800 of guards, Westbrook being the T-1000. I grew up in College Station in 97-99, before Yao and TMac there was Francis. He was nice enough to sign an autograph rookie card of mine after a blowout loss to the T-Wolves (I remember KG with his giant hand up on the bus glass lol). Also got a nice pregame auto by Bryce Drew

Thoroughly enjoyed watching him. He could cross up a defender and finish at the rim with a dunk, a rarity among point guards.

Francis was my favorite player growing up. I felt he could have been great. Always close to a triple double. Francis and Mobley was a hell of a combination.
