How GOOD was Wanderlei Silva Actually?
Wanderlei Silva back in the day was absolutely terrifying. The former Pride Middleweight Champion and 2003 Middleweight Grand Prix winner had one of the greatest runs in the promotions history where he attained numerous records such as most knockouts and longest win streak. But he didn't find the same success when he entered the UFC. So how good was Wanderlei Silva actually?

Definitely deserves award for "Most Exciting Fighter" of all time. As intimidating as he was, I randomly met him in Vegas, and he was one of the nicest people I ever met. Language barrier and all, he was so nice and thankful to meet his fans.

Henderson deserves the spot, and maybe Gaethje will take it sooner or later. but no doubt, Wanderlei is one of the most exciting fighters he doesn't give a single shit on techniques and relies on sheer aggression and malevolent intent to hit someone.

He didn't get the nickname like "The Ax Murderer" for nothing. When Pride was in it's prime, so was Silva. It didn't matter who he fought there was going to be frantic action and blood on the floor. Silva was absolutely fearless. A legend.

My hero, favorite fighter and martial artist of all time. I got into MMA through his fight with Mark Hunt. I had recently dropped out of school and decided to order a PPV on DirectTV.. I loved martial arts and did kickboxing, but never knew about the sport, so when I saw promos of guys wearing gis and shit, I bought it on a whim. Changed my life and Wanderlei became sort of a father figure to me. I live in NYC, so within the next few months, I signed up to Renzo Gracie's school. I got my purplebelt in 2007 and wanted to fight in PRIDE one day too, but when the org died, so did that dream and I eventually fell out of love with training. BUT, I credit Wand with changing my life and the lives of my friends and brother who were influenced by me becoming obsessed with him and forcing them all to train lol. Wand is my personal GOAT.

His "prime" ended on Dec 31st 2004! 2005 was a bad year of injuries and when he fought he was sluggish and much slower, less powerful. His Arona (NYE Fight) he was back in form physically and performed and reacted well but all in all he was on a sharp decline. His style and training was barbaric to say the least and a long (successful) career that does not make. He is having CTE issues already and I fear it will only get worse. Hands down my favorite fighter of all time! He was an absolute fearless monster in his prime, a real legend of MMA! He did not lose those Franklin fights, that second was an even worse robbery! smh!

Cordeiro fight was very long (30 minutes or so) and brrutal and went to decision so he get's back to take a shower and wished luck to Wand. Rafael took his shower and then he saw Wand in the locker room, "what happened, did they cancel the fight" he asked Silva. The fight wasnt cancelled, just Wanderlei bein Wanderlei knocked his oponent in 20 seconds and get back before Rafael finished his shower.

Wanderlei fights were so different from modern UFC fights today for the most part. He was scary. I mean the violence was so incredible he was a monster. I remember how he didnt like all the rules being applied like no head butts and so on. He felt like his hands were tied when that started to happen. When I say scary, i mean people were actually scared kinda like watching a scary movie. Cringing, guarding their eyes, shrieks, it was fucking crazy. I am surprised he never killed anyone in the ring. Too bad he didnt retire a bit earlier because he was like out of his element with all the rules and standardizations and his age and head traumas. Possibly overshadowed his greatness to younger people.

@Ocasio-Cortez4prez2022 roids played a massive role in the Pride fighters struggle in the UFC but I've always thought that it was also due to the loyalty of the pride organization had to it's main draw fighters: they didn't build up new fighters with a steady increase of competition. Pride through new guys up against their top fighters which was great to watch but by the time they merged with the UFC their top fighters were past their peak.

He was never the same after the Cro Cop head kick, he had moments but that was the last of his prime. He would've killed Chuck, Hendo, Franklin, Leben, prior to Cro Cop loss. And he beat Franklin in that 2nd fight, round 2 was a 10-8 round.
