Gen 1 was bad for Dragon types (mainly Dragonite). Despite Dragon being unresisted in that gen, the only attacking move was Dragon Rage. Then Gen 2 added Steel types and Kingdra came alongside Dragon Breath. Gen 3 added more dragons than before, and Dragon Dance which is a staple (Salamence, Rayquaza, and non Dragon types) and Dragon Claw. Gen 4 did the Physical/Special Split, Draco Meteor, and added more powerful Dragon types, such as Garchomp. Also the DragMag combo. Gen 5 is the best Gen for them imo, and the most powerful. The fact that Dragon is only resisted by Steel and there were many ways to take care of that (DragMag and super effective coverage). Gen 6 dampered them somewhat due to Fairy types but caused more to use the uncommon coverage of Steel/Poison. Gen 7… Naganadel was powerful and got banned. Ice long needed buffs and fairy stole the one thing it was good at, killing the flying/dragon and ground/dragon types that are intended to be walls for your starter. Also many icetypes have tragic learnsets & stats despite being a fantastic attacking type. (Which is why every watertype ever learns icebeam, its great coverage)

Some things you missed that I think deserve mentioning: In gens 2-3, dragon type moves were all special, which was really unfortunate for the dragon type since Salamence and Dragonite, the two best fully evolved dragons, were both physical attackers with merely good/ok special attack stats. Both of these mon liked running dragon dance too and didn't have good flying stab, so they ended up only rarely actually running dragon moves in these gens. In gen 4, this changed with the physical/special split, which was a massive buff to physical attacking dragons. Outrage and dragon claw became physical moves, which meant that the top dragons could now get STAB from their better attacking stat, and actually start nuking everything in sight. This change is what pushed dragon over the edge and made them op, which is what caused GF to eventually introduce the fairy type to help keep the dragon type in check.

I think the dragon type is now more defined by their secondary typing or their abilities that their typing. Dragons that are part water or steel type are absurdly bulky, with only a select few weaknesses, and dragons with good abilities like Dragonite's multiscale and Salamance's intimidate help that along. On the reverse end, dragon/grass adds and expands on their weaknesses, since dragon gets nothing new on resistances and gains a bug and flying weakness, as well as loses their resistance to fire. Oh yeah, and another quad weakness to ice. Overall, I think like poison type, dragons are reliant on other things to make them viable.

Hot take: Dragon is still too good of an offensive type. The problem is that so many Pokémon naturally run anti-Steel and anti-Fairy options these days anyway, and what this does is allow Dragon to pop off against other types whose biggest hitters don’t appreciate the rise in these kinds of coverage moves. Generation 8 in particular also gave an indirect buff to the Dragon/Flying crowd via Heavy-Duty Boots, and existing options like Garchomp and Kyurem heavily benefit from new move options.
@pikminman132 жыл бұрын
Wdym anti fairy options? Pretty much only steel types run steel moves with rare exceptions, and at that who runs steel stab other than zone, melly, or sometimes kart? At least in OU. Perhaps things are slightly different in the lower tiers, but poison is in a similar boat. And having one mon to deal with a type (where a lot of fairies have fire moves to begin with like clef and sylveon) or fighting moves for the physical ones or even psychic moves or just being tapu lele you often wont get to pop off with a dragon because the fairy is a mon that usually hangs around rather than dying quick. Maybe you could get away with a dragon nerf if steelth rocks became a proper move, where you can’t keep both it and rock rocks up at the same time.

If you gather the 7 pseudo-legendary dragons, the Eternatus dragon will appear and grant you a wish.

1. Steel ( I mean just wtf, has a ton of resistances which means the combinations with other types is very op and can't be poisoned AND coutners the 2. and 3. strongest types in the game, steel is BY FAR the best type in the game) 2. Fairy 3. Dragon

Dragon type has always been my favourite despite the fact that most of my favourite mons are dark type. Noivern being my favourite Pokémon.

I think Dragonite wasn't even supposed to be Dragonair's evolution in gen 1, signs would be from their design. Dragonite was supposed to be his own pokemon so there would have been 2 Dragon lines in gen 1 until they merged it.

"Kind of meh" is a niceer way of saying that the Dragon type sucked in the first generation. It's only attack was Dragon Rage and it only did 40 HP damage. Dragonite, despite having the highest Attack stat in the game, was relegated to using mostly Special moves since there was no Physical/Special split (it couldn't even learn Earthquake in Gen 1). Being that it evolved at level 55 meant giving up a level 55 slot in competitive which could have gone to something better, like Tauros. Blizzard was also everywhere, was far more accurate and Pokemon that used it were usually fast which meant high critical hit ratios along with a 4x weakness STAB.

People are talking about "wyrm in an apple", but that's not how the original mon's name (Kajicchu) was conceived. The English pun is just a reinterpretation, no?
