The only two I can consider that can go against Messi is the 2010 and 2021 ones. But, then again the 2013 one should have gone to Ribery by similar logic. As far as the 2023 one is concerned, no doubt that Messi deserved it. In 1990 Mattheus won it, in 1994 Stoichkov won it, in 1998 Zidane won it, in 2002 Ronaldo won it, in 2006 Cannavaro won it, in 2018 Modric won it for exact same reason which is the World Cup. You can have a phenomenal season for club, a historic one but in a World Cup year its almost always the World Cup that matters.

In reality, it had nothing to do with robbing Ribery. Truth is, anyone with two eyes could see Ronaldo was the better player, and he had his best numbers that year, which got him the award. Same with Messi in 19,21, and 22. Messi was just a better player than his competitor each year, Haaland and Lewandoski were goal machines but they lacked the dribbling and passing ability of Messi, and with him winning international trophies in 21 and 22, it tipped the scale in his favour. 19 he won the double vs VVD who won the CL only so that edged him out there.

At 36:27 , when you say its individual , well no its not. Pretty much nothing is 100% individual in football (thats logical its a team sport) . When Haaland receive a ball in the penalty area and score , thats not at all a 100% individual goal. I mean if he was alone he wouldnt have got the balll. A REAL individual goal is when you got the ball at 40 meter you pass two defender and then score without the help of anyone AND even here its not even 100% individual since your teammates are making sure thats its impossible for the entire enemy team to rush your face. This is an award for the best PLAYER of the year, Holland was the best goal scorer for that year, completely ghosting in important games. Messi's World Cup performance was the best individual performance in 18 years, after Zidane's, definitely a historical one with scoring and assisting in almost every game. Also, do not forget that at PSG, his free kick won them the ligue and his performance at inter miami won them their first ever cup. 100% Haaland was not even top 3 best players at Man City. KDB was clearly the most important player, carrying the team vs Real Madrid (1st leg) and title decider vs Arsenal, which where the most crucial games for Man City's treble. Then there was Bernardo Silva who was just all around the best player in that Man City squad, even Pep was outright saying it, he played the most minutes and also stepped up in big games vs Bayern Munich and Real Madrid 2nd leg. Rodri was also more important than Haaland, being the most consistent and snatching the UCL title which was the club's biggest dream. When you play as a sole striker with those 3 players behind you, it's really hard to take credit for Man City's treble. That team was literally creating on average 14 chances in the box, PER GAME...

It doesn't make sense that people still think Messi didn't deserve the 2021 ballon d'Or. Lewandowski rightfully deserved the award the year prior to that year but 2021 was Messi's year. Individually, Lewa only beat him in goals scored that year, scoring 61 compared to Messi's 42 (a number which is relatively high for any average player). Lewa was awarded the European golden boot (for top scorer) which he rightfully deserved. Trophy wise, Lewa only won the German league whose ranking is low compared to the Premier League and La liga. At club level, Messi won the Spanish cup and Spanish super cup and was the best player for both. At national level, he won the Copa America with Argentina and was the competition's top scorer, best playmaker and overall best player... Meanwhile, lewa didn't perform well with the national team (And we know the importance of international trophies in ballon d'Or rankings). So to put everything Messi achieved that year statistically and trophy wise, he was the inevitable winner but unfortunately most people use the sentiment of Lewa not winning the ballon d'Or in 2020 to judge 2021. NB: All these statistics don't tell the whole story... It is an award that is highly controversial because it does consider everything. It considers the players image/behavior and fair play, how many trophies they won with their team, and their individual statistics. You can find this information on the FIFA website. For the majority of the time, performances at an international level and trophies won internationally are always a priority, with world cup being number 1. There is always controversy even with these conditions and criteria because there is no consistency.

My issue is the qualifications for winning the award year to year is inconsistent. One year it's because of numbers. Another year it's because of trophies or a good run in the World Cup. The Balon D'or is solely on how much of an impact you have on the field and how big of a footprint you leave in that specific year. Numbers do that, but trophies are the main goal for everyone playing football. Any player can win a cup with their team but how the specific player performed on the way to the finals and the whole season determines if they are good enough to win the Balon D'or. Some controversial decisions can be made, but those decisions are only seen by people who watch highlights of these people and not their whole year's performances. Saying it's politics when it comes to Messi's Balon D'or wins or Ronaldo's wins is basically just you saying any player could've done what they did. And that is definitely wrong.
