My grandfather was a collector of mechanical clocks. Back in the 1970’s, he and my father built a grandfather clock from a kit. Unfortunately, my grandfather passed in 2006 and the grandfather clock was not run after his passing. Fast forward to 2019, and my grandfather’s clock collection was moved to my house after my grandmother’s passing. We recently got the clock serviced by a local horologist and is now proudly keeping time and chiming in honor of my grandparents.

I recently purchased an old clock mechanism with just: the gears, the pendulum and the bell. I since build a new case but I can't find proper weight for it. It's now working with a granite block as power source, not great. I'm sure it will regain his past glory, I live in Switzerland after all.

This is one of those many KZbin videos where the excessive effects detracts from the information being presented. I am just learning how to work on clocks and am addicted to clock videos, but I found this one to be almost unwatchable because of all the glitzy transitions, flying fonts and even the voiceover. You are not selling cars. You are producing an informational video. Please tone it down and just present the information. I think all of us who are interested in what you have to say will appreciate it. Thanks.

I love mechanical clocks and watches. In a world of people using their phones to tell time, they have a refreshingly old school beauty to them. I think grandfather clocks in particular really add something to a home. The sound alone is wonderful. I grew up with a Ridgeway grandfather clock that my parents still have and I myself purchased a Pearl grandfather clock from the 80s last year. It's been such a great addition to my house. I also have my mom's old cuckoo clock in a different part of the house since I grew up with that amd she didn't really keep it running anymore.

Hello and thank you for your expertise. Our clock is an heirloom. Both my wife's father and his father were always working on this clock. I enjoy, " Time", and always was Mechanically inclined, so I have taken on improvements. Changed broken pendulum springs, regulated chime bar hammers, experimented with bending the brass bar that swings, etc. This was all with a common objective of gaining accurate time. This clock is a Danekar and very nice. It fits perfectly at the bottom of a staircase in its own little alcove. The clipper ship and moon decor do not spin anymore as the time advances. It looks like someone may have forced something and it dismantled. This clock has always chimed the hour incorrectly. It can be set of course, but it doesn't last. On the average, it's 2 hours behind. Lately I cannot get the 3,6,9,12, Westminster to work unless I lift the bar that activates it. Also, my question beside this is how do you regulate the "escapement wheel" on this clock? Thank you!!!

10:10 pm I got a ridgeway grandfather clock and I don't know why the second hand won't stay working or the pendulum swinging. I was inherited and I really want it to work. And suggestions

Thrift find. My parents had one when we were litte. Which i lived and bought this one. Had it cleaned, he charged a couple hundred dollars. He had to leave. And was gonna come back because It always ran slow. We never had him back. After watching a video on here how to fix a clock running fast or slow, I'm glad i saved my self another house call visit. $$$.

I am 71 years old and I have a Long Case clock also know as a Grandfather Clock. This clock was assembled by my father over 50 years from a clock kit. It has three chime tunes that it can play each quarter hour along with the hour strike chime. When it comes to accuracy I am able to adjust the pendulum to be within about 10 seconds a week. One big thing is that these Grandfather Clocks do require periodic maintenance by a person who repairs Grandfather Clocks. They need to be cleaned and lubricated about every 2 years. After more than ten years they need to be rebuilt to replace bearings that have worn out. If a Grandfather Clock goes too long without maintenance they will stop running until they get serviced again.

I am 62 and I have a grandfather clock that my great grandfather built from a kit as well! He built 2 of them, one for each of his daughters. He also cut down the trees for the wood he used. My sister has the twin of my clock.

A lot of what you say is just wrong: 1) If the clock's energy is derived from weights and gravity, then the empty space within the wooden frame or box in which the clock is placed isn't just for show, it's meant to allow the weights to gradually fall as they pull the chains or strings attached to the gear train, much in the same way a wall clock with weights needs empty, unobstructed space below it for the weights to fall. Only in the case of a spring-driven grandfather clock would the frame be mostly decorative. 2) Though obviously a pendulum adjusted to perform a full swing in a second would make it easier and simpler to design the gear train around 1:60 and 1:12 ratios between the different gears, it's neither necessary, nor universal. There are plenty of clocks with pendulum that don't swing once every second. The only change this makes is on the gear train to convert the swings into hourly rotations. 3) I don't know where you got that the anchor escapement of pendulum clocks is universally more accurate than the balance wheel escapement of mechanical watches. What's required is a regular swinging motion, and balance wheels can do that just fine. Just ask any old navy veteran about the marine chronometers they used to use on board ships to calculate their longitudinal position. Those had the same kind of escapement of regular pocket or wrist watches, only far more precise and mounted on a special casing to protect it from the weather and the ship's movements. From Wikipedia: "These technical provisions usually yield timekeeping in mechanical marine chronometers accurate to within 0.5 second per day." 4) At 5:17 you said "the heavier the weight and gears, the longer the power reserve". The weight of the... weights... has nothing to do with how long the clock's power reserve lasts, that's determined by the rotations of the escapement, the frequency of the oscillations and, in the case of these types of clocks, the height the weights are falling from. How heavy they are only depends on how much energy is needed to push the pendulum and keep it swinging. Some clocks use a pulley system to reduce the distance the weights fall each day, making the power reserve of each wind last longer, but requiring heavier weights. 5) There's no reason not to get a clock with a pendulum made of metal, most good-quality clocks aren't severely affected by temperature changes, and even for the cheaper pendulum clocks, it isn't such a big issue.

The Good Thing Is You can buy a new one for less money than an antique, there’s a lot of companies who Still in business in these Days, they Still, Manufacturing Those, Clocks With the Same mechanical Technology, I Have a German Grandfather Clock, made by Hermle, The Clock Is From 2020, 100% mechanical it chimes every 15 minutes and a strike every hour, Beautiful wooden case with brass. Every time people see it, they think that the clock is more than Hundred Years 😅. So you can buy a new one a very decent price. Another thing is that you can silent the clock during the night if you don’t want to hear the strikes on the chime.
