In which I show how I go actively looking for "happy accidents" when composing, especially when working with other musicians. I have found it is an easy way to get creative results fast.
This video is part of a series, where I detail my work with / friday_musik and / anabambalaelsatatiana for Amplify Berlin.

My mom, who is very creative in her different arts, has taught me that art is 90% serendipity - she says it partly tongue-in-cheek but it's something I have taken to heart: that things going unplanned may lead to unique and unexpected joys that make your art better than your original plan.

My first time recording in a real recording studio around 1985 we were using a Linn Drum. We accidently changed a sound of one of the drums to a orchestra hit and it made our track have a completely different feel that we ran with and changed our song for the better.

Someone showed me this video because I mentioned a "happy accident" I had. I was working with my Maschine+ and a few monosynths on a synthwavey/cyberpunky sort of thing. I had plugged in a reverb to the send/return of my BX-60 mixer and was playing notes on one of the synth channels to test it out. I didn't realize I had left the Maschine with Record active, and completely by accident recorded a little fill that absolutely worked on that synth's part and kept it. Happy accidents indeed!

Great post Hainbach. I believe collaborating with people on music is one of the greatest forms of communication between people. It requires 'active' listening between two (or more) people, which can only be accomplished with minimal 'ego' :) I think your footage towards the end shows it can be challenging and a feedback process which requires trust to be devoloped. I started my creative journey as as a visual artist (painter) but very difficult to collaborate in that medium - tried a couple of times with 2 or 3 friends working simultaneously on the same canvas but immediately gets literally very messy :)

I have to say, when I think of all of my favourite ideas I've come up with, it's the unintentional stuff that I love the most. The easiest songs to write are the ones that happen organically. You just feel like you're coasting along, each section after the other seemingly falling effortlessly into place. Most of those sort of stem from the various tunes that snap into my head out nowhere, and I immediately have to reach for my voice note app to get it down before it goes. I'm sure it's a common phenomena. It can feel like an auditory hallucination sometimes. You hear the song in your head like a complete record. I always try to recreate that, but find you never do get it 1 to 1 perfect, and that's actually okay, because sometimes you end up with something even better. It's a great feeling, and certainly makes up for the times when you're sat at your DAW trying to come up with an idea, nothing sticks, and you feel like shouting and throwing something. I'm definitely an advocate of never trying to force and idea, though I certainly understand if you're writing for a client and need to make a deadline. It depends if pressure helps you in that situation. I don't think it helps me personally. Itvs also why I try not to direct too much in my band. I trust who I'm playing with to add their own parts, know what they're doing, and in doing so they make the song arrive at a place I never anticipated, and that's very satisfying too.

Generally Bob Ross was super formulaic though! If only he had embarrassed more experimentation. But I like how he imagined his landscapes. It’s also interesting to examine how some instruments and processes lend themselves well (or not very well) to accidental arrival of sounds and structure. I find looper pedals allow for less perfection than that of sequencers. But maybe it’s also about getting to know an (electronic) instrument super well, enough to know how to make room for randomness. Amen to turning grid off!

Happy accidents are great. Artists definitely need to be good at recognizing and using these opportunities. OTOH, accidents are unreliable. So artists can't rely on them. Gotta have the core skills necessary to work without serendipity, and the awareness to take advantage of happy accidents when they happen.

LOL, people call me the Bob Ross of whatever I am doing as well. In House music being repetative is like a feature of the genre, so it is weird that I still feel so drawn towards that genre. I love to keep any variations that are still musical in there, and people often say my music is not House at all because I sometimes struggle with leaving the drummachine alone, and create so many variations,
