Kass Ponyo is my favorite movie ever. My big brother started taking Japanese in college this year and became interested in anime. I had never been even slightly interested and thought anime wouldn’t be my thing. I was wrong. He forced me and my family to watch ghibli movies starting with ponyo in Japanese with subtitles. Best movie I’ve ever seen. Not to mention ponyo is probably the cutest character I’ve ever seen. To clarify I’m not the type of person to have a favorite movie or song but this is truly my favorite movie. I am now a huge studio ghibli fan and am going to the museum this summer. The movie was so good I got sad after watching it because it was over. Recommend to ANYONE with any taste. Trust me you will love it. I also agree with you on the first scene.

Beware that studio Ghibli isn't only a Miyazaki project. Without Takahata and Suzuki he wouldnt had the idea, the will and/or the mean to achieve that. And most of the decision either manegerial or commercial weren't Miyazaki decisions. Same, Whisper of the heart isn't a Miyazaki movie.

Sadly, that is never going to be the case, as Harem shows make MONEY. Rarely anymore, unless backed up by major studios willing to risk there existance itself, do they stray from norms. This is due to economic nessisty and not any other reason...

There still are masterpieces (or at least praiseworthy anime) coming out, though. Rakugo, 3-gatsu, Flip Flappers more recently and there are numerous 2010-2013 anime, namely Penguindrum, Shinsekai Yori, The Tatami Galaxy, The Monogatari Series, Mushishi Zoku Shou, I consider to be on par with classics like Eva, Utena, GitS, ABe's trilogy and LotGH. Also, ABe and Ikuhara are working on series, Kino and LotGH are getting a remake and we're getting 9 original series in the next season. If that is a disheartening situtation, then what isn't? Of course, money is behind everything that comes out, since the dawn of art. I deem that what we really need to focus on is being critical.

The crazy thing is how accomplished he is as an manga artist as well. His manga "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" has such an amazing world building, great art and everything else. I originally read the whole thing nearly two decades ago as a gift from my mom and it changed everything for me and til this day his work has influenced my art and illustrations.

Slight correction: Lupin III Castle of Cagliostro was Miyazaki's first directed film, but not his first directed work. That was Future Boy Conan, released around the same time.

In my earlier days practicing my art, I would meticulously watch one anime movie a day, and deconstruct the artwork. Eventually I got to the Ghibli catalog, and it completely blew me away when you break it down frame by frame, how much detail is actually in there. Not to say it's the MOST elaborate of all time, *cough* Akira, but still such a wonder.

I feel you should do a video on anime influences outside of Japan. While I understand you couldn't put everything in the video, one important (or at least I feel) aspect of Miyazaki's influence is from outside sources, especially from one man, Jean Giraud, otherwise known as Moebius. If you take a look at Moebius' artwork alongside Miyazaki you can see a lot of similarities, especially with Nausicaa's glider and a short comic by Moebius called Arzach.

Admittedly the only story I have read is a short story called "The Long Tomorrow", which I highly recommend. But yeah, his artwork is one of the most influential styles of the entire comic book medium. A channel I suggest checking out, despite being a little abrasive with his opinions, is the Rageaholic, specifically his "Top 5 Recommend Comics" video where he goes into a little bit of detail of French comics influence on Japanese media. Edit: Just remembered, Silver Surfer Parable with Stan Lee. Another good read.

I remember watching a video of him criticizing Ghost in the Shell for ripping off Blade Runner the fact that he could do that while knowing Long Tomorrow exists and ignoring that... well that's pretty much sums the man up. I started with Kiki's Delivery Service. I watched it on VHS at my nana's house when I was little; no idea what age specifically. Later I saw Spirited Away since it won the Oscar in 2002, a year a favourite animated movie of mine was also nominated- Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. I had to watch the movie which beat the movie I was in love with as a kid. I then fell in love with Spirited Away and was totally okay it beating my horse movie hahah bought some of the manga/graphic novels for Spirited Away and the rest is history.

Miyazaki is great but the person who truly should be evaluated is Osamu Tezuka. I would say that he was the very first man who inspired the world of comics and animations in Japan with various kinds of philosophies or some great messages. Tezuka was a surgeon and survived air raids during his adolescence. All of those his experiences formed his views of life and death and these are reflected in his a lot of works. By the way, I like Mononoke the most. The music, descriptions of nature and the plot.

Nice analysis. Been rewatching some of these films recently and I agree with the progression they have. One correction: Whisper of The Heart wasn't directed by Miyazaki. While he wrote the screenplay, it was directed by one of Ghibli's top director's at the time, Yoshifumi Kondo. Kondo was pinned to a successor to Miyazaki and Takahata, but alas, he died from a heart attack. It was commonly attributed that his death was caused by overwork, and influenced Miyazki to take it easy later on.

I think it's more that he brought some small stylistic changes as others tried to imitate and replicate the success of his works. If you look at those that came after him, a lot of Ghibli stuff, and Tezuka a lot of it is just trying to mimic them and what they did. But they're honestly missing the point and not creating something memorable. That's the problem with 90% of what I've watched since getting hooked on Miyazaki. People are creating some really really good stuff, but it's simply not memorable at all other than the fact I enjoyed it. WHile Miyazaki/Ghibli films I can go on and on about and still remember most plot points even if I haven't watched in forever. It's strange but it's a sad truth about the industry, even if the stuff is still more enjoyable(IMO) than most animation that comes from other countries including my own USA. Maybe one day it'll change but who knows?

I usually love your videos but this one... not so much, I don't think there was much of a through-line especially in relation to the title, it also lists off milestones in his career without giving them proper context like the development of the Nausicaa Manga for Animage his meeting Toshio Suzuki the then editor who is criminally underrepresented considering a lot of the achievements with regards to studio management are his. I think it's very telling that your research was from personal context, articles and various forms of online documentation, whenever you do get to a part of his career that is better represented by these sources the video benefits from it, I'd recommend you check out "The Art of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Watercolor Impressions", "Starting Point 1979-1996" and track down "Yasuo Otsuka's Joy in Motion" to get a greater understanding of his career, I think you're a talented writer and video editor and with better sources you could make some great videos sorry for being a nitpicking shite.

I love Miyazaki's works, they are unlike anything else. I tried to go see Totoro in theater's a while back but they sold out. (Who gives Studio Ghibli movies a small theater. That is totally not cool!) But it's okay because that taught me to buy tickets ahead of time and I have. Now I'm counting down the days until I get to see Spirited Away on the big screen.

I have seen that old anime movie but under it's English language title Panda and the Magical Serpent. I have the DVD that came out back in the $1 DVD years from back in 2006. Found it at Walmart back in 2006 along with Kimba the White Lion and an anime version of Thumbalina that had a character that looked alot like Jirachi.

I was a true fan of The Wind Rises when it came out. I personally was hoping that that film would have won an Oscar that year, because I thought it was truly his greatest masterpiece... and this is coming from someone who wasn't exactly a pure fan of his films ((note: I respect Miyazaki's films. I liked most of them, but wasn't as big a fan as I was for other Japanese animated films. I respect filmmakers like Hideaki Anno, Katsuhiro Otomo, and especially the mastermind behind "Your Name" which recently received an English Dub.)) With that said, I also want to point out that it's because of Miyazaki that I was able to experience on of my favorite classic animes "Nadia: Secret of Blue Water" if I'm not mistaken was written by him, but directed by Anno.

While Miyazaki made loads of amazing films in Japanese animation, I think that Osamu Tezuka is the main person who influenced the Anime that we see today in the style and look of the characters. Though Miyazaki did make Laputa Castle in the Sky and his ideas would inspire Nadia Secret of Blue Water that was made by Gainax and that went on to form Neon Genisis.
