The cynicism is not my favourite. Sure there are problems to sort out and they know that, but saying that they stumbled on a simple to have fun with, difficult to master system by accident is an outlandish take. Regardless this was a really good and helpful video, i have to go and reexamine my combos and see what I can get with this new information

Heat Engager heals a huge amount of recoverable health but definitely NOT ALL of it. Try testing it with a half hp recoverable health and it won't regenerate the full bar. I think it's fixed at a certain amount only.
@Moqlnkn9 ай бұрын
Good video, Frame. Time to list all the stuff you missed / chose not to include: All of your attacks deal 30% of their damage when blocked while you are in Heat mode. Moves that normally cause block damage even outside of Heat follow their own unique rules, though. All block damage, and 70% of damage taken while airborne, is stored as recoverable Gray Damage. Getting hit while standing on the ground is completely "true" unrecoverable damage. You cannot be K.O.'d by blocking an attack. Getting hit by Rage Arts and Wall/Floor Breaks removes all of your Gray Damage, so it's unrecoverable. A few characters also have moves that do this to you regardless. Attacking the opponent on hit or block regenerates chunks of your Gray Damage. Heat Bursts are armored on startup. This is basically identical to regular Power Crushes, which means the armor does not start instantly, and it doesn't work against Lows and Throws. If you get hit during the startup of your Heat Burst, you don't enter Heat mode, and keep your Heat bar. Heat Engagers do NOT regenerate ALL of your Gray Damage - there is a maximum, about 25% of your lifebar. (It's basically all of it, in most cases) Heat Engagers are +17 on hit midscreen, but what happens when the opponent hits the wall depends on the move. Some Engagers start a wall combo. Whether a Heat Dash starts a full juggle or just gives a free hit is related to the STARTUP speed of the Engager used; 14f or faster = no juggle. You can usually also combo into these from certain hits or counter hits, so it's a good balance choice. Heat Dashes are all +5 on block, but they become at least +18 if the opponent is near the wall, with nothing guaranteed. They also take a massive amount of additional block damage when you Heat Dash. Almost every Heat Smash is either a plus-on-block mid, or a punishable low. There are exceptions. If you hit the opponent into a "free hit" state, similar to the state after a 14f or faster Heat Dash, and then use a Heat Dash on that free hit, you cannot continue the combo at all. This includes all "Floor Hits" at the end of wall combos. In general, they really made sure that you absolutely could not continue a combo after getting an unscaled hit, which includes "free hits."

Nice and informative. One little tidbit some folk might not know - Heat Smashes ignore amour, except on Rage Arts. So the beat Power Crushes clean, and even beat Heat Burst if they catch the start up.

1. In neutral, incorporate Heat Engagers (Normal hit/Counter hit followup) a. Free mixup & gimmicks b. Heals c. Launchers/Partial combo with Heat Dash if in heat 2. On combos, extend with Heat Burst if needed (wall carry, kill confirm) 3. Situationally use Heat Smashers for punishment (block/whiff) or as heat runs out 4. On round end, pop and cancel HB to not waste heat

This is off topic but your latest video seems like the logical place to leave a comment for you. I always appreciated your videos on the realities of online play, what ranks mean in the real world in reguard to skill ect. I'm playing Tekken again for the first time in years (you can probably guess at why) and 8 obviously handles points and ranks differently than 7. I'm rusty as hell, can't move well or remember most of my combo routes, nevermind all my neutral tools/tech and there is this whole new mechanic I haven't really learned how to utilize yet. Yet I have the highest rank I've ever had while still progressing upwards. You don't even lose points on a loss in the green ranks which previously were know to be a near inescapable hell that required you to actually get good at the game and learn matchups to even have a chance of getting free of. So I'm really hoping once you have some answers you'll do a video and discuss things like where did Green Rank Hell relocate to? What ranks makes you an above average player? An actually good player? Ect. I can't take any satisfaction in a free promotion to yellow ranks and am curious what the data (when we have some) says about what my actual goals should be and what I should be striving for.
@FrameWhisperer9 ай бұрын
It will be long time before we have numbers to answer those questions. There currently seems to a spike in power around Flame Ruler, but it's probably because a lot of legacy players have not had time to filter through to higher ranks. I plan to get Fujin tonight myself.
@kinginthenorth14379 ай бұрын
@@FrameWhisperer Thanks for the reply. My guess is hell relocated to yellow or orange, probably orange. But I'll need a few weeks to a couole months to knock the rust off and learn the new match ups before I have my own skill where it should be to guage how good my opposition is.

28:15 for some characters there are alternatives to their heat engagers if you don't want to activate yet. Jin has ff4 and ff2 to pressure from mid range and for i13 after ch 4 he gets either 1+2 or df1,4. First one engages heat the second one does more damage and gives +10. However while having this liberty Jin doesn't get much from his heat mode compared to some other characters. All of his good sutff is spending heat entirely except for easy electrics which is not much of a bonus for me as a Jin main as I can threaten people with that without heat anyway. On the other hand there is Kazuya who gets enhanced ff2 and his devil hellsweep etc. Azucena gets enhanced liberator that can actively retain heat bar if the opponent is scared. Victor has excalibur in heat which is basically multiple use heatsmash given its properties. Oh and Feng gets a safe b1 that gives shoulder on nh. So that's also part of character identity in T8 actually. Some characters want that heat and spend as much time in it as possible. While others (like Jin) are very careful about using it but when they do they want to absolutely obliterate you with very damaging heat smash or enhanced versions of their engagers. EDIT: Jin doesn't even want his heat smash because f3,1 is better as it gives a full combo that will do significantly more damage, impacts 1 frame faster, is 2 more frames plus on block, has a mix up option with f3,3 and is hit confirmable. The only times heat smash is more valuable is when you can use the second version that gives wall splat from big distance that will give a wall combo which leads to over 80 dmg. But you need awareness and some skill for that. Also I forgot his sanchin stance but that's because I don't use it. Personally I don't like it. With that hellsweep you risk with your life. It's not worth it.

Great and informative. It is complex you're right, and nuanced and character specific. The ability to take away white health also diminishes the advantages of going into heat engager somewhat too

Cannot agree of "not what Namco was aiming for". That's exactly what they were aiming - simple on basic level, but complex and deep, if you look closer
@FrameWhisperer9 ай бұрын
Sounds like giving them too much credit. This mechanic and a roster of 31 characters obviously needed way more testing than they were gonna bother with. Adjust it in patches, sure, but a game sold at full price should be finished.
@artsq15509 ай бұрын
@@FrameWhisperer now you're falling into "white/black division". Sure, I have my share of negatives about both T7 and T8 game balance. But I'm 100% sure that such complexity was intentional. Tekken team has some good mechanics designers. They wanted to make a gamechanger, not "yet another wallbound", so they followed Nintendo principle and made Heat multi-purpose. For newbies it's "press-to-damage" and "press-to-combo" button, for mid-range - some panic move and extra damage, for high-skilled - additional mechanic to work with in depth, expand decision tree. The fact that it's not balanced for everyone... well, even if you totally remove it, same characters who has powerful heat also has strongest out-of-heat moves. So it's a general balance (or, perhaps, marketing) problem. But that doesn't cancel out the fact that someone actually tried to make new mechanic as versatile as possible, and used not only for blind charge into opponent.

Don’t know how I feel about this mechanic yet tbh. On some characters it feels really obvious and intuitive how you’re supposed to utilize their heat moves and those feel awesome to play. Other characters it feels really ambiguous what it’s for. Like he been playing Asuka, Jin and Law, and on Asuka it’s really obvious what it’s for, but on Law I feel almost like I’m missing moves? The nunchucks getting buffed is cool but Law doesn’t have scary lows to induce crouching so having a big safe mid launcher doesn’t really do that much for him. Auto-parry seems cool but he still doesn’t have a scary low from DSS so it’s not a powerful offensive option. Then Jin has power stance into Omen, but you have to be literally on top of them to make them block it, and then he doesn’t have a strong mid from that either. So I have no idea how I’m supposed to get value out of heat on either of them besides their smashes (which are really good), whereas characters like King, Raven, Alisa, Leo, Jak etc. seem to get really large buffs.
