The local government is saying it is easier to evacuate the mountain communities than it is to restore services in a reasonable period. Lure Lake is being requested to evacuate, they are sending helicopters to Chimney Rock with emergency supplies and SAR crews, people are being flown out to emergency shelters as they are being set up.

This is the second comment of yours I've seen on two different videos. Of course people know VA was hit hard...but the devastation where we are in Wester North Carolina is far beyond that. For instance...the entire town of Chimney rock is GONE. There is NOTHING left. So yes, while VA also sustained plenty of damage...it's not on THIS scale. Being that I'm actually IN this area, it's disturbing to see someone whining about not receiving pity and recognition when entire communities were just wiped out here. Stop whining and grow a pair.

Yes. Certain stores and places that have satellite internet are allowing people to use their services to contact friends and family. Cell service just got restored around 9pm in Jackson and Macon counties but internet is still down (except for satellite). I live in Jackson County...and we lost communications early Friday morning when the creeks and rivers crested their banks...so being able to finally contact people now is such a relief. Our town is running out of gas and food supplies though and I don't think there's a single gallon of milk left in the entire region for kids to have to drink. We're all under a boil water advisory and our own communities are the ones helping each other...we haven't seen any government aid in our area.

Tough decisions for the FC to make not knowing the capabilities of the pilot and his aircraft, and coordination of the operation of this aircraft with the other air assets involved in the rescue effort.

I looked at the history. This was researched by a graduate student who lives in Asheville. She said this was the worst natural disaster there since the early 1900s. They had a really big flood back then that was written about, and she said she had compared the historical event to the current situation, and the volume of water was much greater from Helene.
