To simplify: Even numbers run east/west, odd numbers run north/south. Triple digits are loops or spurs. Also, the highway sign telling distance to a city actually denotes distance to a "central point" (often the courthouse). But it's not measured to the city limit. Also, U.S. highways are graduated in miles, there are small mile marker signs you need to take note of (mile 50, then mile 51,mile 52, etc). You can let emergency services or other vehicles traveling with you know EXACTLY where you are! Exit number 53 is AT mile 53- you can tell exactly how far from the exit you are. One more helpful- big highway sign says name of town/city or road exit is for. If the little sign saying "exit 53" is hung toward the left side of that sign, the exit is on your left. If hung toward the right side of that sign, then exit is on your right.

It’s actually deeper than that and more easily explained this way as all interstates ending in an odd number run north south and all interstates ending in even numbers run east west. Interstates 71 and 74 are perfect examples of this. Also, just like the exits on the interstate the numbers start the lowest on the west and south

I did a road trip recently and had no idea what the 3 numbers were, but if they don’t connect back to the same interstate then where do they connect to?
Whenever the number is even, you’re traveling East/West. If it’s odd you’re traveling North/South. This is true for state routes as well I believe! Look out for it the next time you’re on the highway.

I’m literally just writing this for study purposes (writing is a way to internalize) So south west is lower numbers, north east is higher numbers. Ends in a zero is east-west, ends in a 5 north south. 2 digits is for nation highways or whatever. 3 is for the branches. Odd number means it doesn’t connect back, even means it connects back. The last rep digits match the major highway it branches from

In 7th grade I had a cool little old balding guy with a huge white handlebar mustache, spectacles, and big cheery smile, as a teacher. In a chipper voice he gave us one of our first assignments for the class, which would give us about 2 weeks to work on. Every kid was given a booklet that contained a state map, with all kinds of info including pit stops for food and bathrooms, hotels, etc. (This was around 1998, only some of us had computers or internet. It wasnt a staple yet.) He told us to plan a roadtrip in the state we were given. Our trip was supposed to be at least a week long, and we had to plan for all our hours of driving, sleep, food, bathroom breaks, and filling up on gas. And we couldn't just pick random roads. We had to have real and genuine places of interest we were going, and why we chose certain roads. We were all graded on the amount of effort and detail or even enthusiasm we put into it, or mostly just how much we considered to actually make the trip, and even what it might cost. I don't think I finished it, and I was very overwhelmed by such a project, but it was probably the one assignment over all my school years that I had the most respect for and was intrigued by, for how much I actually learned for something so real, and the fact we were trusted to even work on it like we were as capable as adults. Because to be brutally honest, we were. That project was a compliment to all of us.
