Funny story. I walked into the break room of my workplace last Saturday and looked at the TV. It was on the cheap-to-broadcast station that runs a Sci-Fi Marathon every Saturday. One of my favorite games Bloodborne was heavily influenced by Lovercraft. The one twist I like is that that the Old One cults so often secretive in other works in bloodborne was the mainstream religion in its world. Didn't end well for them though

john o i love.how bloodborne reveals itself, firt is some virus, a plague takin over the city because of a miraculous blood, then it pulls you into the, it is blood, but alien blood, afterwards it goes from aliens to openly saying this are entities beyond time and space and contacting them as doomed the world because it has become and eternal cicle of death and reborn, same concept from previous from software games, there's no hapoy ending, just non ending cycles.

Robert E. Howard became a good friend of Lovecraft and became part of his writing circle and adapted Conan into the Lovecraftian mythos. The tower of the elephant has a creature from beyond space and time that was summoned by a sorcerer, and it didn't make Conan go insane (most likely cause he is of Atlantian decent)but it begs him to kill it because of how weak it is at the time.
@kendallmoore39367 жыл бұрын
An excellent point. I would also add Clark Ashton Smith and R.H. Barlow into that grouping as well.
@tomjeffersonwasright22887 жыл бұрын
Lovecraft patched together several of Robert E Howard's stories after Howard's death to make a book. Howard was a student of history and often borrowed from ancient civilizations in his stories. I suspect Lovecraft did the same. Whatever the methods, Lovecraft managed to complete Howard's work in a style very close to that of Howard. I love the writing of both men. Their stories were very good, as were their styles, and considering that they were breaking new ground, their creativity is even more noteworthy.
@mmestari6 жыл бұрын
And of course, August Derleth, who continued Lovecraft's work. Also from their literary group is Edgar Hoffmann Price, who is the only person who has met H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith and Robert E. Howard in person.

Just to add to your idea about their friendship and influence -in the last CONAN film reboot...When Conan went to free his men from the dungeon , a tentacled thing in the underground pool had to be slain...Definitely a reference to HPL's world of nightmare horrors...

It's funny yet sad how movies and even games based directly off of Lovecraft's work are usually awful but "Lovecraftian" works are often praised. Maybe the only way to make a true Lovecraft film is to have someone who is clinically insane write the script and screenplay.

A reason for this is that Lovecrafts works themselves where more of a existential dread than a physical threat. Trying to put that into games/movies/ and other media is very very VEEEERY hard if not impossible. Where as someone can take "Lovecraftian" ideas but give them a physical form and representation and get the idea across. John Carpenters "Apocalypse Trilogy" does this very well. For those not knowing the Apocalypse Trilogy is The Thing, The Prince of Darkness, and In the Mouth of Madness.

Been a while since I watched Hellboy but from what I remember there were large parts of the story that felt like they were lifted straight from Lovecraft. Like the whole idea of ancient gods, lying in slumber in space (in another dimension?) Heck ... a lot of the monsters in that movie looked like Cthulhu or a mini-me version of him. Personally, I would love to see one particular Lovecraft-inspired piece of entertainment adapted for the big screen: The 2005 video-game "Dark Corners of the Earth". Cosmic Horror pops up in the oddest places. J.R.R. Tollien's Silmarilion features Ungoliant, the mother of spiders as a creature from "The Outside", and is like the reason why Shelob has the weird powers ( cloying scent, light, limited sentience/sapience and a stinger) and Shelob was part of the influence for the Spider in It, the other half being . . . HP Lovecraft in general, but likely the Color Out Of Space in particular.

I never realized just how many things were influenced by lovecraft until I read his collected works in high school. Then I saw it everywhere. It was all around and I never saw it. There's this one really cool movie called The Banshee Chapter which combines influence from Hunter S. Thompson and Lovecraft that I absolutely love. There' also a book called The Damned Highway that combines those two authors' themes and I'd really like to get my hands on it eventually. I just love the concept of "the Big Bad isn't really evil so much as it is so big in comparison that it doesn't even know you exist". Like humans are so used to being the big active force on the planet and not much else really stands in the way. Seeing something so big or advanced that we instantly look like ants in comparison is just a fascinating concept. Then there's also times where things are mysterious and hidden for a reason and if you go looking for them you're only going to have a bad time. It's best just to live a quiet mundane life instead of unleashing that hell on yourself. It kind of makes me feel better about being complacent in my mundane life. It's certainly better than going mad once you find out what's really going on behind the scenes.

Truth be told, my favorite thing inspired by HP. Lovecraft are the "Call of Cthulhu" mods for Rimworld. Adds in cults and makes your colonists act irrationally when they get minor visions of Cthulhu and his unyielding power. They work really well with Rimworld's psychology mechanics. They also add in various factions and creatures from various lovecraft stories.

While watching Get Out, I had guessed the twist and general roles of the different characters quite early on due to the very clear comparisons to be made between that movie and "The Thing on the Doorstep". It's a remarkable movie that I think owes a lot to this source. The protagonist's partner is wrapped up in a dark family plot to self-perpetuate by the insertion of their minds into the bodies of hosts. There is a sense of trying to break out of the trance, and a definite shift in the character traits of those inhabited. The names and locations sound downright lovecraftian. The friend who became all too aware of what he was dealing with, was in many ways more bold in discussing it, etc.

Hi grew up as a fan of the video game franchise The Legacy of Kain. Amy Hennig, the creator of the franchise, was inspired by Lovecradt work, the game has for a villain a creature called the Elder God who has a clear Cthulu like form, a giant blue eye with tentacles all around him and the whole underworld (sprit world) in wich he resides, he's the one who is turning the wheel of destiny, the circle of birth, death and rebirth. Looking at it, there are many inspirations from H.P Lovecraft through the game, but even more in the Elder God.

Brilliant, as always my friend. H.P. Lovecraft was the punctuation mark of the Enlightenment, he just didn't get any respect for it in his own lifetime. To take an idea from the movie DOPE "...But, you know, the spirit of the music was definitely still '90s. I mean, It Takes a Nation, Straight Outta Compton... Paid in Full was ahead of their time. And then you got Snoop, Biggie, Wu-Tang. They took the game to the next level. Blueprint was kind of like the punctuation mark."

The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulu is great, glad to see it getting a mention. Definitely will check out The Haunted Palace. One of the things that I believe contributes to Lovecraft's exceptional style is his formidable grasp of languages. It can be seen in his invented language of course, but stories like The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, The Transformation of Juan Romero, and especially The Mound illustrate his familiarity with several families of languages. He wrote Spanish beautifully.

Some others to consider, all pre-King/Carpenter: "The Shuttered Room" from 1967. Several episodes of the 70s Night Gallery TV show did short takes on HPL, including "Pickman's Model" and "Cool Air". Also, 1968's "Equinox"--an extremely low budget affair, it laid out the entire Evil Dead concept (visiting kids, evil book, tape recording, creatures from another dimension) decades before those films came out. Finally, "Possession" from 1981, which has to be one of the strangest films of all times, features an healthy dose of HPL inspiration. Recently shown on TCM at 3 AM, the description read: "a woman forsakes her husband and young son for a tentacled creature". Its beyond weird...

I'm finishing up my first feature film, The Quantum Terror, which as you can probably tell by the title, is inspired by Lovecraftian themes but at the same time, it wasn't the only source of influence I drew from. There are also elements of Lewis Carroll, Salvador Dali, and David Lynch. However, in the "everything's a remix" tradition, I let the ingredients mix in ways that also inspired new ideas that felt wholly my own. I love Lovecraftian films but have often noticed that people who create content that is "inspired by H.P. Lovecraft" often do themselves a disservice by trying to stick to what they think he would do, rather than what they as artists should actually do based on where the story takes them.

Lovecraft and Robert Howard, the creator of Conan the Barbarian, where contemporary author and friends who corresponded through mail frequently. Both died young. It would have been interesting to see a collaberation between the two, perhaps Conan set in a Lovecraftian world fighting Cthulu or something similar.

The 2010 German film Die Farbe was an interestingly done version of the Color Out of Space.

good stuff. your idea of a Vincent Price piece piqued my interest. Growing up on horror movies in the 60s made Vince one of my fave actors (and a wonderful human being) to this day.

John Carpenter's The Thing is my favorite movie. I guess that automatically makes it my favorite Lovecraft inspired film.

Great video! My favourite Lovecraft movie must be "The Resurrected" from 1991 based on "The Case Charles Dexter Ward". Also there is a serious lack of Cronenberg on your channel...

The first season of True Detective eventually led me to learn about Lovecraft.

This was a fantastic video. I am a fan of the HPL and I did not even know it.

Reanimator is also a Lovecraft story. Plus Lovecraft was such a Poe fan he would hang out in the Providence cemetery that Poe was thought to have spent time in when he lived in the city. So definitely influenced by Poe.

In Fallout too, Bethesda include Lovecraft references in all their games.

This channel is so good. I would love to see you really dig into Kubrick. Do you have a Patreon account?

Hey Brian - I don't at the moment, but I'm in the process of setting one up (and making an announcement and details video) along with doing a new channel trailer. Those things should all be going live in about a week. Funny you should mention Kubrick as I was thinking about devoting separate videos to each of his films, starting with Fear & Desire. I'm not going to start that particular series for a few weeks, but I'll do it so every third or fourth video focuses on one of Kurbick's until we're through. I might do Malick after that, after Radegund comes out.

Thanks for the reply. That's all good news. Kubrick has such an amazing library of work, and there is so much to discuss. I'm looking to forward to whatever is next on this channel.

I want to make a romance movie that goes on exactly like a typical rom-com but then has a hardcore Lovecraftian shift halfway through for absolutely no reason and is advertised entirely as just a romance movie with no hints to horror whatsoever in any trailers or promotional materials. I wouldn't want it to just become a horror movie or dark comedy all of a sudden either, no that's far too predictable >.>

You probably haven’t played a lot of games but more and more do we see lovecraft seeping into game worlds as well. Hidetaka Miyazaki used Lovecraftian themes and influences brilliantly in his masterpiece Bloodborne (from which my avatar is derived). If you haven’t experienced this story I highly recommend it.

The Resurrected is probably one of the best adaptations of Lovecraft's work, if not the best, in my opinion.
