My anxiety, paired with lack of activity due to depression - left me with a heart rate of 146bpm just sat down in a chair. I treat this as an emergency and paired with breathing exercises, beginning to move again and focus on fitness, losing weight with keto etc, I have brought it down to 76 in 4 days. The power of breathing is astounding and something I've only just found out. I used to run 6 miles a day, so I'm hoping these excersises will quickly help me get back to that level of lost fitness.

@@joe1071 a high heart rate isn’t necessarily a-fib. A-fib is irregular/off beats of the heart, HR could be the same, slower, or faster with A-fib. But it likely would be good to get a doc to check it out.

@@KillAllCommies2 Slowing the breath is inrcedibly powerful. When I was dilligent with my yin yoga practice I got down to 3 breaths per minute. This brought my HRV up from 40 to over 100 during those sessions. I'd think that's a clear sign of how closely linked our breath is to the nervous system.

Did he just say “it used to take me 30 minutes to fall asleep. Now I do HRV training for 20 minutes before bed and it only takes me 10 minutes to fall asleep.” ? Net gain zero other than increased HRV
@markplane4581
@markplane4581 5 ай бұрын
Actually, he said it took him 30-90 minutes to fall asleep, so a drop in latency to only 10-20 minutes is a big deal. When my latency is high, typically my resting HR is high, and my SNS is overactive. If I can get my PSNS to activate when I'm winding down, not only does my latency go down, resting HR go down, and HRV increase, but sleep quality significantly improves, as I can get much more deep sleep. That's hardly net zero.

There is no reliable way to change ones HRV, so measuring it is just meaningless. And possibly harmful, checking numbers and conditioning yourself on placebo must be stressful for the body.

Measuring baseline HRV works great for me as a reminder when to take a little extra care of myself. It also motivates me to live healthier. Resonance frequency breathing worked very well for me. I measure with a Polar H10; reasonably priced and it's the gold standard of consumer devices. I also use EliteHRV to analyze data and to do breath work.

Moderate cardio exercise with deep breath in, hold for 5 seconds (bear down for vagus nerve activation) then slow long release. This for 10, 15 min sessions. Works wonders for me.
@liorahess
@liorahess Жыл бұрын
It's not good to bear down. If you have an aortic aneurysm (and many are not aware they have one--they are also not uncommon), which is a weakness in a the large vessel that extends all the way down to the abdomen, this can cause it to spontaneously rupture, which results in sudden huge abdominal bleeding and is usually fatal. Former nurse here. Doctors advise never bearing down. There are other ways written about to stimulate the vagus nerve that are safe. Bearing down isn't one of them. You can google to confirm: Johns Hopkins University, the NHS, and others.

I did resonant breathing for 30 minutes before bed yesterday, I remember during the session I was extremely sleepy, almost falling off my chair... then I went to back a few minutes afterwards and it took me a while to actually fall asleep. I was not sleeping very well before but at least it was quick to fall asleep. Then I would wake up 1 or 2 times during the night. I know these methods take time but I still find it weird the difference between the session and when I got to bed... maybe I should do these while laying down.

Anyone know of a way to measure HRV and/or coherence real time for meditation purposes? I don't want to have to wait till the end of the session to see if something is working - I'd rather be able to change my posture, breathing rate, mindset, etc. And have immediate feedback as to how well that worked. Do any apps do that or do they all just collect data for some amount of time and report average metrics at the end?
