"It was humiliating for him. Putin's always meant to be the guy who's able to manage the elite. He clearly failed in this crisis."
The legacy of the Prigozhin coup has eroded Putin's relationship with his inner circle and could still cause his downfall, Prof. Mark Galeotti tells Kate Gerbeau on Frontline.

Prigozhin made one big mistake and that is not going all the way up to Moscow with his gang. He should have understood that there was no way out after his move.
@xantiom
@xantiom 6 күн бұрын
Prigozhin had to stop the plan because he didn't find a stronger support from the military to back him up. His plan was based on a fatal miscalculation, he thought that by being the voice of reason and by being so vocal about the absolute neglect of the Russian army by Shoigu, he would find enough support by every military branch as he marched towards the capital. That support was rather weak, and Prigozhin had to abort as he could not face the army with his Wagner group. Secondly, Prigozhin owed a lot to Putin to be in the place of power he was enjoying, he didn't hate Putin, he hated Shoigu. Prigozhin's "condition" to suspend the coup was to get Shoigu sacked.
@brentverc
@brentverc 3 күн бұрын
@@xantiomI think your right. But it's interesting the army chose not to engage either. Plenty of people watched to see how it played out instead of taking action. He would of lost but I think if went down fighting the collapse of Russia would have been accelerated.
@blechtic
@blechtic 3 күн бұрын
@@xantiom I disagree with the first point. He wouldn't have had to fight, because the army did nothing to stand in his way. The security forces did nothing either. His mistake was to assume Shoigu was selected for his competence instead of being Putin's biggest loyalists and possibly best friend. He didn't understand he was challenging Putin and not only by questioning the decision to appoint Shoigu but by going against the guy essentially doing what Putin wanted. The only way to survive was to take over but then again to do that he only would have had to get Putin or run him away in such a manner he couldn't have come back.

Putin is not good in a crisis, and a series of crises is coming. His troops are increasingly foreign, his industry is busy exporting 'goods' for free (no one is paying for the output), the country's infrastructure is already in desperate state, his allies are eating his lunch, the best brains have fled and he has no exit route. The war cannot stop as the economy collapses and the war cannot continue because he can neither make nor buy the weaponry his primitive armed forces need. Even if he tried to 'negotiate' as 'peace' he faces an economic disaster and has no prospect of his country being accepted back into the world trading structure. No good options.

If only Putin could have been in a position to coach a successor, he could have relaxed into the role of "father of the nation", relaxed into old age, and formed a dynasty. To be honest though, I don't think it was ever going to be possible for Putin to do that. The successor has an incentive to assassinate Putin to get him out of the way and gain access to the seat of power early. The would-be assassin has an incentive to follow the instructions of the future leader today to benefit later, so the threat is credible. Putin knows this, so Putin has an incentive to assassinate the successor before that can happen. The successor knows this so has even more of an incentive to assassinate Putin first, and Putin knows the successor knows, and round and round the circle goes. Without a peaceful transfer of power there's only dynastic families or violence. And even the dynastic families tended to boil down to violence at the end of the day. People really under-estimate the benefits of a system where leaders have the ability to be removed from power but not killed.

Cmon: we all knew Prigozhin was a dead man walking. Also, it should be remembered that in immediate aftermath of the German launch of Operation Barbarosa, Stalin went into seclusion for a bit. Putin is a keen admirer of Stalin and a student of WW2. In other words, Putins disappearing during Prigozhin's march on Moscow was likely not an example of a weak response to an emergency.

There is something really ironic about a career bootlicker misjudging his worth and overplaying his hand by trying to count on personal loyalty against a more established careerist, all because he may have felt something approaching sympathy to the people dying as part of his "side hustle"

I enjoyed Prof Galeotti's analysis of the power plays within the Russian elite and in particular between these two men - Putin and Prigozhin. I'd now love to hear a similar analysis by him of the life and power plays of former US President Donald Trump, who (as I see it) has such an affinity, temperamentally speaking, with these Russian movers and shakers..
