Forgive my ignorance, but is lab created the same thing as synthetic?
@JustinKPrim3 жыл бұрын
yes
@stark_energy3 ай бұрын
By general definition of "Synthetic" yes it is the same, but here the woman has a different terminology, that is, "synthetic" is made total of chemistry to create the crystal very fast (without growing it) usually by plasma heating (see Synthetic Ruby created from Microwave) that is done under an hour, while the elements that made this crystal are the same with the natural one, the pattern created will be polycrystalline (instead of one single crystal) which can easily be detected by gemstone experts using ordinary microscope. It is in contrast with "lab-grown" which is natural grown BUT occurred in controlled environment, analogically similar to growing real plant in hydroponic indoor environment (which still resulting in natural product but much cleaner than growing outdoor). Lab-grown crystal can be much harder to distinguish versus a high quality naturally mined one, sometimes it is even impossible. I personally agree with what the woman said, we need more definition to discern between this synthetic chemically-made gemstones versus synthetic lab-grown made gemstones.

A VERY IMPRESSIVE FACILITY'S! I have a few questions. First, why do you work with low quality emerald rough as your dissolving zone source material? If I was looking to maintain precise control over my final product, I don't think I would take chances with rough material that is possibly contaminated with who-knows-what. It is understandable that you don't want to work with toxic pure chemicals like beryllium, however, couldn't you use some of your poor quality first generation crystals, and then tweak the chromium/vanadium impurities to produce higher quality crystals with more desirable saturation. Have you ever tried disolving the very small, but beautifully colored emeraldsfrom Afghanistan? The color of that material is as nice or nicer than Columbian material. Do you experiment with your seed material? I would imagine putting some experimental effort into the seeds and refining your seed plates so that you don't have to cut them out would yield bigger thicker cut stones. Next question, what do you use for the lining of your autoclaves, and what mineralizing agent do you add to your water? Do you do big size red beryl? What do you use for source material? Thanks so much!
@Doofus1712 жыл бұрын
They'll never answer those questions. Mainly because most of the lab grown gems are owned and operated by mobs and organized crime organizations.
@richardrobertson1331 Жыл бұрын
Indrid_Cold, all good questions. Platinum is the "cheapest" chamber lining to have plated on the inner surface of the lid, as well. The clear solution needs to be slightly acidic. Flaws make synthetic emeralds marketable. With no flaws they look like glass to the naked eye. When synthetic emeralds were first developed in Siberia, Soviet Union, they did not add a dye, but now all synthetic emeralds must have a UV light dye in them . . . however, by making emeralds with crushed emerald raw materials, maybe they think they don't need to add the dye since they might be considered "re-crystalized emeralds" rather than synthetic. Very good video, thanks for posting.

I don’t think they want them refined and pure. Without inclusions they don’t look convincing. I think they like the inclusions left by the manufacturing process because it emulates natural emerald inclusions.

@@JustinKPrim I think the question is, if the input stone is replicated in the "grown" stone, then why can't you just use the "grown" stone for future seeding? Is it the case that the imperfections in the seed have to be at a certain level and the grown stone has fewer imperfections so you have to start with seeds that have just the right amount of imperfections? At 4:40, the seed looks much darker than the grown part.
