🪨 How I accidentally broke my fish tank In my 15+ years of keeping fish, I have never broken a single tank… until now My tanks have been growing a lot of algae lately because of the sunny weather here in Oregon! I usually use a metal blade scraper tool to clean the algae off which works well, but this time I made a mistake. I scraped a little bit too close to the silicone edge which caused the tank to leak. Luckily this was an easy fix (with some silicone) but this doesn’t solve the other problems I had with the algae scraper so I decided to modify my toothbrush into an algae cleaner! Using a food safe torch, I heated the toothbrush head then bent it. Now: -The toothbrush works for all surfaces - silicone, glass, acrylic, curved bowls -Has a long handle so I don't get my hands wet -All plastic so no rust -Can reach under decorations, filters, etc. :) Portals and duckweed available at FishPortals.com! 🌱

You have to be very very careful with those. If you get too low to the bottom it could pick up a piece of gravel and scratch up the glass on the tank. I’m in a FB group for aquarium keeping and I’ve seen many posts about people accidentally doing it. It’s convenient but imo it’s not worth the risk.

@@Fish4Ever but when you used the magnetic tank cleaner, did you like the results? If so, then I would just go back to using that one and from that point on when it is not in use, leave it at the back towards the top of the tank, where little hands would be less likely to find it. Also, that situation with the gravel getting caught between the cleaning pad and the glass seems like a one in a million situation that would most likely not happen again.

@@conni2youI mean that would not be the only reason to stop using one. She has fairly tiny fish. The magnets can get deattached when trying to move to another side and squish two fish between them.. or float to the top. Not everyone uses them for that reason. The magnets also have a big drawback: they still cannot clean the corners fo the tank and also leave trails sometimes.
@kylebusc3624

@@conni2youhonestly those magnet cleaners are so bad lol. They never get all the algae off, they can scratch easily, if you move it too fast they just disconnect and now you have to go elbow deep to re-attach them. They're also kind of expensive when you compare them to razor blades and a toothbrush for the silicone.

I work in a fish store with dozens and dozen of tanks, we use: -Plastic credit cards -magic erasers (yes, like the mr clean ones) There is nothing as safe, that cleans as well. The magnetic ones are guaranteed to scratch your tank within a few months, they'll pick up iron flakes one day, believe me. Metal scrapers are a big no-no for obvious reasons. Yes, you need to remove your floaters though. Which ain't a bad idea to do so in the first place prior to cleaning anyway. In my own tanks, I just manage to never need to clean the glass lol. Newspaper for the outside glass btw! Now you know all our secrets ;)

I'm not sure if they make one small enough for a tank like this. We have a 20 gallon and it works beautifully, though you have to be careful moving it around because it moves a lot of water around it and can bump into fish. You also have to avoid the gravel at the bottom or you can severely scratch up your glass, likewise it will cloud the water if you have a soil/sand substrate.

We tried this as well and it didn't help. While they do eat the leftover food they increase the bioload in the tank which in turn still feeds the algae. And we've tried everything, more plants, hydrogen peroxide (green beard algae growing on *everything*), water changes, etc. We're resorting to algae killing chemicals now, kills the pond and trumpet snails too which is nice. It will also kill the 3 shrimp that are left (it was like 20), their population severely declined from how much we decreased feeding.

A matured and properly setup planted tank should have little problems with algae. I assume you test for Ammonia Nitrite and Nitrate. It is most likely Nitrate which can be reduced by having less livestock, growing more plants or doing more water changes.

@SC-rk6zt
@SC-rk6zt 7 ай бұрын
@@Winter61742 I don’t think a very powerful light is used here and you can have a lot more light than this with no algae issues. I stacked 3 leddy plant lights front to back on a planted tank with Amazonia soil, co2 injection, macro and micro fertilisers and after a while I was trimming out buckets of plants a week and had no algae. There are a lot of things that matter more than light intensity for example how long the lights are on, if you have more powerful lights on for shorter the plants can take advantage of that more than algae. Nutrient balances in supplements can make a big difference or even without fertilising it helps to know the concept of estimative index (plenty of everything so the plants out compete algae) VS lean (super low nitrates just micro ferts and no spare nutrients for algae growth). Algae isn’t harmful and the aquarium in this video looks healthy I’m just saying there are better ways than scraping off masses of algae regularly.

It's a very delicate process and has a lot more to do with an entire range of things (even KH and GH) along with the nutrients you're providing as well as CO2, and a matured tank is key. I had fish tanks for 10 years before I figured out how to make an algae-less tank... It took a lot of messing with following all kinds of guides and studies over the years and in the end I'm still not convinced it was anything I did and moreso the tank sat with good parameters for 3 years before it became a heavenly crystal land of no algae

Hi, unsolicited advice guy here with unsolicited advice Growing that much algae isn't unhealthy by any means, but it's a problem you can fix... You could either A) increase the filtration to basically give more space for the algae to live, B) increase the amount of fast-growing plants you have in your tank, C) move the tank out of direct sunlight if it's in the sun, or D) provide better conditions for the plants currently in your tank to esentially outcompete the algae. That could look like more frequent/larger water changes, changing the lighting schedule, adding fertilizers/CO2, dosing "liquid CO2" or other commercial algeacides, or removing excess duckweed to give it more space to grow Honestly, could be any or all 4 of those things that might address the root problem. But also it's an aesthetic thing, and scraping a tank is easy, so, up to you

I'm really sorry to hear about the loss of your fish and snail, Bubbles and Alfredo. It must have been a tough experience for you. It's crucial to assess various factors when keeping fish and snails to ensure their well-being. To provide some guidance, let's discuss some aspects that could have impacted their health. Firstly, the water hardness might have played a significant role. Certain species of fish and snails are more sensitive to hard water, and sudden changes in water parameters can be stressful for them. Additionally, the size of the fish tank or plastic tub matters as well. A smaller volume of water can lead to faster fluctuations in water quality, which can be harmful to the inhabitants. To maintain water quality, using the right filter and performing regular water changes and maintenance are essential. Ensuring a stable environment through proper filtration, testing, and adjustments can significantly improve the chances of a successful aquarium or habitat. Moreover, tap water can contain chlorine and other harmful substances that can be detrimental to aquatic life. Using a dechlorinator, pH stabilizer, ammonia and nitrite remover, and biological filtration are indeed essential steps to make tap water safe for fish and snails. By being mindful of these factors and investing time in creating a suitable environment, you can provide a healthier habitat for your future aquatic companions. Remember, learning from such experiences can help you become a more knowledgeable and compassionate fishkeeper.

Have you considered lowering light hours? Algae always means that there's a surplus or deficit in either certain nutrients or light hours so you could experiment a bit to see what works. Personally, my tank, right beside a window does best with only 6 hours of light and biweekly dose of all-in-1 ferts. Another tank deeper in the room does well with 10 hours of light and weekly dosage. Both tanks are heavily planted, though I don't have as many fish as I prefer betta fish and they are mainly go solo

Magnetic glass cleaners (as a comment has previously posted) AKA MagFloat is a common brand that my parents use. They own a professional business maintaining the cleanliness and wellbeing of aquatic life in tanks at well known businesses including hospitals. The MagFloats are used every time they clean a tank and they truly are lifesavers. I have 2 tanks at my apartment (One 120 Gallon, One 75 Gallon) that contain my turtles and algae is major with those guys. There is a MagFloat in each tank and my daughter loves to help with it. Definite lifesavers for sure.

Get a pleco but you need to get a certain type, like clown nose plecos are great algae cleaners plus they stay pretty small (minimum tank size 10 gallons). I have a clown nose pleco and my tank is in my room, and every night I hear him scraping the algae off with his teeth. Also one time I took him out and put him in another tank which was completely covered in algae and by the next morning he was almost half way done, and it’s a 30 gallon!
