I think dedicated homeschool moms like you don't get enough credit for how attentive they can be to the individual needs of their child. It takes time and effort, and you showed us excellent examples of how one can adjust. Thanks!

I feel like I spend a lot of my time assessing and reflecting 🤣 I didn’t know how big a part of homeschool that would be before I started.

On Amazon, there's a visual grammar book. And it has been really helpful with my younger children being able to see how part of speech relate to each other

ELA is such a big umbrella that I find it a little overwhelming, even though we all enjoy it as a subject area I n my house. If you’re ever looking for a video idea, I would be so curious to see a breakdown of which ELA curricula you’ve used with your kids year by year. I have a hard time imagining what our progression might look like and the times at which we’d potentially consider introducing various new curricula to make our ELA well-rounded.

Great video idea thanks! It can be hard and a lot of it I am learning as I go as my kids are very different when it comes to ELA.

I love how much emphasis you put on this issue. "Giving up" on a curriculum (and sometimes a subject 😭) is way too common in the homeschool community

I agree! It’s way too common.

My son is a 5th grader, and I feel like he seems to struggle catching up. He has a tough time at school now. We're seriously considering homeschooling, but we're not sure if we're equipped. Well, if I am equipped. I mostly just have so many worries, especially the social part of it. He is already having a hard time finding friends even though he is friendly and outgoing. Another worry is if i can teach, I am not a teacher, and English is my second language. I have been doing research and watching other homeschooling family on KZbin. It's just so overwhelming. Thank you for your information.

It’s definitely a difficult decision to make, with a lot of variables to consider. The thing that helped me the most was focusing on what was best for my child and realizing that it’s never a permanent choice.

I am currently reevaluating core knowledge knowledge portion. My son just seems to tune out when we do it but feel it is a beneficial thing. We are on 2nd grade ancient greeks. When the knowledge is things like fairy tales hes into it. When it is on things like history based topics we struggle. He also has adhd and im wondering if those non fiction units are juat to dry for him. History is another subject we have plugging in issues with, so it goes hand in hand. The skills portion works great for him but knowledge has veen a struggle lately. I am not sure how to tweak it or what i could even replace it with that offers such hardy background knowledge. Thanks for sharing how you tweak things to make them work better for your girls!

Have you tried pulling from the trade book or resource list in the teacher guide? One of the things I like about CK is a lot of history units are told in story format, so it’s a bit more relatable than straight up history facts. Would supplementing help? Does he need more hands on projects or maybe a documentary, coloring pages while you read the story etc.

@michellegf Thank you for your ideas! We do get books from the trade list. Adding in documentaries is a great idea and I think I will try doing that. He loves to paint so I think I will try setting him up with some paint supplies to paint while I read and have him listen and paint about whatever topic we are on and see if that keeps him plugged in more!

This was so helpful. My 5th grader that attending public K and 1rst has the same weakness in spelling. If you were to go back with the knowledge you have now, would you still get Phonetic zoo? Or would you choose something else? We have been making spelling lists from words from her reading, without covering the spelling rules. I have considered Phonetic zoo but didn't want to spend the money on spelling program that may or may not work for her.

I don’t think Phonetic Zoo is worth the price, especially because I think it only would work well for a particular type of child. I think if I could do it again I would have continued with All About Spelling. It relies on lists but also teaches the rules.
