The stock market from 2022 has been marked as having one of the toughest years in nearly a century, making 2022’s equity the worst year since the Global Financial Crisis in 2008.
A vicious combination of contradictory policy, volatility, and inflation at 40-year highs erased a whopping $ 14 trillion of wealth from the global stock markets! Talks of a US recession in early March 2023 are littered over all the news headlines, and for the majority of the year, most of us just saw a sea of red in our portfolios.
But I am glad to see that the first month of 2023 has been really good for our portfolios, with the S&P 500 up by 8.6%, the JSE Top 40 up by 6.4%, and Bitcoin up by a whopping 41.4%! And seeing that it is a new year, I made some exciting new additions to my own portfolio, which I will be sharing with you guys today. So buckle up, and let’s get started!

In order to make profits from trading you need loads of experience and a well defined strategy, which most traders don't have. If you trade without the proper preparation, you're most likely to lose your money. Identify the buy/sell ratios and identify the market leaders and most importantly. Diversify! this will help you spread risk

You're most welcome Tania. I like to diversify my investments across different currencies, especially considering the falling rand, hence why I convert my rands to dollars and buy shares and ETFs in my offshore accounts :)

Hey Lorna. I don't have any physical investments. I highly doubt that online investments will crash. The world is getting more and more digitalized and data is stored and backed up all over the world, so I won't be too concerned about it. But diversification is always a good idea, I just don't have anywhere safe to store physical metals and I prefer to live minimalistic :)

According to the Simply Wall Street website, Carvana is currently trading at a discount of 78.9% with forecasted revenue growth of 16.4% per year, so it seems like a good entry point right now. But I don't know much about these companies to be honest, so I cannot make any recommendations on them unfortunately

Hey Tania. Sorry about that. I accidentally reported the wrong return % from my Sygnia RA in this video as I forgot to change the investment period. I give the correct number in my March portfolio update video. My Sygnia RA actually has an Internal Rate of Return of 7.7%, which is not bad given the recent bad markets.

Thanks Marius! I'm glad you are enjoying the content! :) Not as far as I know. You can compare the price with the analysts' target and then calculate it, but that will take quite a bit of time. I usually have around 30 stocks that I like which I search for individually every month and then buy those who has the biggest discount for the month

Hi Pieter, I was listening to a recent Power Hour webcast by the Just One Lap on choosing ETFs for your TFSA. One thing that I`m a little unsure on is the choice of using offshore etfs in your TFSA. Does the USA not charge 30% dividends withholding tax which would create a 0.2 - 0.5% drag on your dividends? This I think (0.5%) would apply to the Coreshares Global Total World etf in your TFSA would it not? Would like to know your thoughts and if you think going offshore in your TFSA would negativity impact your TFSA`s potential?

Why do you still have a PPS RA if fees are higher than other options you mentioned?

Hey John. Mainly for diversification purposes. I am not a certified financial analyst or a certified financial planner, so I do have the inherent risk that I might mess up my investments when investing everything myself. So in order to diversify away from that risk, I decided to keep a portion of my RA and TFSA within actively managed funds that are managed by the professionals. But I nowadays invest 90% of my money myself as I gain more confidence in my ability to do it well.
