Everyone has their own opinions about one on ones. Here's how I approach them as a software engineering manager -- regardless of startup of Big Tech.

@@harran9962 glad you found it! 😁 This channel is going to be wayyyyyy more ad-hoc than my primary one "Dev Leader" -- so hang out here if you want more stream of consciousness but otherwise the main channel has my edited content 😁

I don't know what your aims are for your channel, but I found the first 5 mins of this video a bit rambly, and I was tempted to click away. I came for the SWE content. On the topic of what I would like my relationship with my manager to look like, or how I might approach it if I were a SWEM. When first establishing the relationship, I'd like to set the bounds of the meeting, ie. feel free to use this session to rant, or to know that I can ask for my direct coaching if I so desire. Or even the option to have fewer meetings if I don't find them useful. From the manager side I'd be looking to check in with how the engineer is making progress against their level expectations in the context of a progression framework, and use the meeting as a steer on whether or not changes are needed

I have an entire channel dedicated to more rehearsed software engineering content: KZbin.com/@devleader This one will remain completely unedited and rambly because it's just how I talk 🙂 It's purely so I can stream of consciousness as I'm commuting (since I hate commuting). Feedback taken and I don't mean to be dismissive but... That'll only get better as I fundamentally change how I talk. If people want more structure I do highly recommend my other channel with polished topics and rehearsed and edited videos. Even my live streams on that channel are significantly more structured than if you were to just have a chat with me. I think bounds and expectations for these meetings are SUPER important -- fully agreed on that!

for managers a 1:1 is a box checking exercise. a leader doesn't need to schedule such a thing.

I fundamentally don't subscribe to this because I refuse to pit the concept of leader and manager against each other. I lead teams. I schedule things to keep myself on track and make sure that I create availability for others. I absolutely need to schedule them.
