In my whopping 3 months of experience, I can attest that stripping down is even more challenging when you're still in the learning phases. I'm eager to experience differences in lenses and filters and blah blah blah. I actually almost sold off some of my EF-S lenses and only kept them because it didn't make a big difference financially for me. However, I'm "growing up" a bit, and now realizing that the 10-18 and 55-250 will see more use because of their portability. It only took one trip with a 70-200 mammoth to teach me this (Yellowstone). I got some amazing shots of bison with the 55-250. I only reached for it because I needed to be handheld and portable in that moment, but some of those images were the best I captured. It was a very valuable lesson for me to see amazing shots come off of smaller and cheaper gear. Proper settings, technique, and lighting were what made things look great in those images, and I didn't miss my fancy giant lens. This subject burns a bit more now because I'm now AWARE of my overboard amount of gear, but I'm at least coming up with compromises. I keep a larger # of lenses in a larger bag that stays in the car. The 70-200 stays home waiting for a special event where it could be needed. I went with the backpack style Tarion bag, which is still small but can fit some clothing and snacks and whatnot in addition to photography gear, with my SL3 riding on a camera clip. This has me sort of "choosing my weapons" before I leave the car, and I'm doing a better job of keeping it to 1-2 lenses, with maybe a pancake lens that can actually fit in a jacket pocket. I also do have a sling bag similar to the Tarion, which is where I leave my 2nd camera (an old 60D) with the kit lens and nifty fifty ready to go if I want to just grab something to take quickly. You're probably fully aware of it, but I wanted to mention the EF-S 18-135 USM lens. It was my go-to for Yellowstone because of its focal range, and has become quite affordable. Serves me very well when I'm shooting in less predictable environments, and I was able to shoot telephoto from a car window whilst switching to wide landscape shots just a minute later. The AF is stunningly fast, better than anything else I've used from the EF-S lineup, and the stabilization seems to be more advanced as well. Easily could serve as the only lens that a minimalist would need to own.

I still remember this camera was reviewed by landscape photographer, Nigel Danson on dpreview channel few years ago. He used it with a kit lens and the result is mesmerising. I'm glad this cute little camera is getting rekindled by you. Keep it up! Great photos and love the setup.

Don't worry about your 250D, I still use a 600D, a camera that was new 8 years before yours. It still does a reasonable job, which I'll be showing on KZbin soon hopefully.

Wow, I am so glad I’m not a You Tube content creator! I only have to take one camera and one lens which, in my case, is a small manual prime. If I’m hiking for landscape photography I’ll just put it in my normal rucksack and when use a peak design capture clip to attach it to the straps, with a small tripod on one side of the rucksack and a flask of hot tea on the other side. If I’m going out for street or travel photography I’ll either use a peak design 3L sling or, if I want to carry a bit more, a Billingham Hadley so I can stuff in a water bottle and a rain jacket. Job done!

I made the fatal error of buying a 90d, I also had a 2000d and a 250d, I spent way too much money for what I needed. Turned out that the 250d was what I needed, but because I was so eager to get different things, I overspent and never really got to know the 250d. Now it's just me and the 250d and a couple of lenses, I'm loving it for handheld especially because it's light and has a nice flippy screen. It's a bloody good camera. Looking forward to more of your videos

Yeah, I’ve often wondered about the 90d, but the 250D is just so good!

@@TheJoshuaPeg 90d doesn't like budget lenses, that's for sure. Not saying it's a bad camera, of course it's not, but It's so blooming fussy. It's nice to have those extra pixels but when all said and done the 250d meets my needs perfectly. I will run it till it stops

I also jumped in with a 90d and a truck load on lenses. Great camera but the kit was just too big and heavy to be bothered to take it out. Bought into a much smaller and light Fujifilm set up and love it! The 90d is now only my wildlife set up👍

@@TheJoshuaPegI love my 90d but too big to take out everyday with dogs and a couple of lenses. Great for landscapes and wildlife just did not suit me for everyday and street photography. Opted for the smaller Fujifilm XT30 and a couple of nice primes

Have you ever thought about upgrading your kit lens? I've got the same kit as you and I upgraded to a used Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 and the difference is night and day. Another good choice would be the Canon 18-55 f/2.8 IS USM

I do a lot of hiking in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. I carry my camera which is a Fuji X-T3 that was purchased specifically for its size, weight and weather sealing, two zoom lenses, tripod, filters and extra batteries. That's it. I got tired of lugging lots of equipment. I use a Capture Clip as well and find its convenience invaluable. The Fuji lives on it unless it's raining.

As someone who started on a bridge camera I'm excited to use the SL3 and then hopefully work my way into mirrorless but that's a few years out still. I've been binge watching all your videos waiting for it to come in the mail I bought it used with a few prime lenses. Out of all the photographers I follow you have your own unique way of explaining things and the fact that you use a beginners camera actually helps an audience feel more confident with one in their hands knowing that they could take it and use it for years and even come back to it which makes me generally happy to support your channel. If you were to upgrade, then a S/H EOS80D would suit well. If for no other reason than Back Button Focus. It really is useful when you focus and re-compose. Or if you want to hold focus on a set point while things change, like people moving past etc. Plus, you can set up lens calibration if you find your focus is a bit off at the wide or tele lens. Very handy. Mind you, it is a heavier camera because of the magnesium alloy frame. I am so impressed with the 55~250 IS STM lens I bought S/H (it looked new, and I think someone bought a 2-lens kit and sold this to a SH store). I have never had CA problems with it and was surprised to learn it has ED glass in it. That is really unusual in a kit lens.

AF micro adjustments are certainly something that would be nice to try. I am able to use back button AF on my SL3 though. It's not something one would know about unless they toured the controls, and it took me a long time to find it. I've programmed the AE Lock button to Start AF, and the shutter press is now the AE Lock. It's completely altered my technique for the better. However, the SL3 is so small that the button is much less ergonomic to press for AF... I have to press it with the joint of my thumb, and sometimes alter my grip. It's cumbersome, but I've adjusted to it sufficiently to make it well worth it.

Ever since I discovered back button AF on my T3i (600D), I could never look back! It's game changing for how I compose my shots. Paired that with AI Servo AF and my action/wildlife photos came out a lot better!

@@miiiiikeee Yeah, it's amazing. Great for creative shots too. Like in street photography it'll let you focus on an object or background while waiting for your someone to walk by... or hold focus at a point where you know that people will be walking to prevent a focus hunt by the time they walk into frame. It opens up the possibilities so much once your mind accepts that focusing and exposure can be decoupled whilst still using AF.

Great video im just starting out and have a canon 2000d purely for its wifi facility, i have a 18-55 lense 70-300 and 50mm lense which im really pleased with would it be worth getting a 16-35mm for landscape or is what i have now suitable all advice greatly appreciated

A 16-35mm is probably amazing, but you don't have to get the higher end L lenses. Joshua proves in most of these videos that you don't need the wide aperture for great images, and you certainly don't need to carry the bulk. The lens you're probably looking for is the EF-S 10-18. It's fantastic for vlogging or general video purposes, and the wider angle complements your current assortment of lenses. It is almost the same weight as the 18-55, and very easy to carry around. I got mine for $130 USD.

Well, I dug up about a dozen military surplus-styled bags from my dad that I'm testing for shape and size that I can add inserts inside to keep things cozy for my gear. I'm also looking for something I can rig to be secure at my front so I can have a regular backpack for hiking. Whenever I see people with nice camera backpacks in a natural setting, I keep wondering how in the world they take care of themselves during the journey (and I wasn't really thinking that maybe these people were 10 min from a parking lot).

A bit off topic, but how much post production of your images do you do in Lightroom or Photoshop? Most other on-line photographers that I follow always make mention of it but I don't recall you ever talking about it.

In my opinion iy would be extremely helpful to discuss the importance of embracing 'failure' in the growth process and how to be your own critic. As you the brain is a wonderful computer that can edit a scene while your are looking at it in the viewfinder causing you not to see distractions, poor composition or bsd lighting. and when get home you look at your images and say what the hell, why doesn't this look like it did when I took the image. thanks again, and stay safe

The SL3/250D is marketed as a beginner camera. There is nothing sub par about this camera in any way! Its APSC sensor is razor sharp, and capable of taking incredible pictures AND video.

I'm in fujifilm land: with the X-T2, kit lens and 55-200mm. But I need a better body because I want dynamic range for video - or rather 'cinematography'. And the XH2S is bloody expensive and I kinda get the feeling the Lumix S5 is a better fit for cinematic (and regularly, low-light, moody) shots. BUT if I have to buy lenses for the Lumix S5 I end probably up in the same price-range as the XH2S - unless I use the vintage glass I have for the first while... So... go XH2S and keep the lenses, or go S5 and vintage... damn... I also kinda like the X-T2 for stills, it works, the lenses work. All that's not working is the video side of it.

yea, I agree, but, that also kinda put me in this situation. I would've stayed Fuji ecosystem if it was for photo only, but I want to expand to cinematic vibes. Even kinda considering a BlackMagic because of their color science cinematic results... probably doesn't even matter that much what body one uses as long as they all got that 4K, 10 bit, 4:2:2, something-log@@TheJoshuaPeg
