The same shit happened to me. I posted in a liminal space Facebook group and the mfs deleted my photo. I followed all their rules like giving credit, giving it an eerie title, and making sure it fit the description of liminal spaces (unlike half of the posts on the page) but for some reason my picture was deleted. The worst part is a mod had to check my post before it went public so someone approved it and then another person removed it with no reasoning.

I agree, wholeheartedly, with your definition of liminality. The reason liminal photos got popular wasn’t (just) because of the creepiness they had, it’s because they made you feel like a kid again. They have this sense of nostalgia to them because of the grainy quality or old televisions that you saw when you were a kid. It takes you back. The liminal subreddit is no place saying what is or isn’t liminal if they can’t follow their own rules. God, the definition being “it’s a transitional space” is so annoying, especially if they can’t simplify it like you did.

i think its more people pretending they recognize it like for example. there is a picture of a park with grass and a slide with a seesaw like the one where you live. honestly its just something for shitty photographers to do out of bordom due to covid. nostalgia with the camera quality is also attention seeking because we still have tons of other things that are nostalic like school, old photos, video games and movies. the reason why it feels unsetteling is because someone said it is. naturaly when you go somwhere empty and then a friend sends you a message saying your alone and that there is no one there just puts you on edge. its only unsettling if someone mentions it and thats how you get those thoughts.

I come back to this video every couple of weeks and watch it to the fullest every time. But no matter how many times I do, it never gives me the same experience as the first time I clicked. It all played out like a movie. The hook, the simple yet alluring plot, the halfway montage, the plot twist at the end, and a heartfelt speech at the end that genuinely encapsulates and captures essence of most of our childhoods. 4:57 THATS MY PHOTO!!! Liminal space photography is one of my favorite artforms :D A few tips: Lighting is important! find places with lighting that doesnt quite make sense. Most of my photos were taken in an office I used to work at after hours with little lighting. Liminal spaces are not neccesarily "transitional" spaces per say, but rather a space outside of the proper context in which you are familiar seeing it in, for example an empty school/office, a park at night, an empty warehouse ect. You were right on target with a lot of the road trip photos and I think you were limiting yourself by sticking strictly to the definition... remember, a gas station at 3am is still liminal because of of the shifted context, and why a lot of liminal spaces are abandonned. The infinite suburb was great!! reoccuring and infinite spaces are liminal because it breaks the context of something being possible, while still being a transitional space, and also invoking nostalgia so in short 3 things you need for a great liminal space photo 1. A break in normal context 2. A confusion of lighting 3. A call to nostalgia The goal is to make a place seem like they've seen it before, while also bumping up the uncanny value. Try to make them feel comforted, yet unsafe.

I always imagined liminal spaces were reflections of how artificial and alien the environments that we live in are, and the odd emotions they invoke when you take the people away from them. The reason time has to pass is for us to look back on the aesthetics of that time period and realize the absurdity of it.

@@justas423 yes. that is the main idea of liminal spaces. also it's suppose to be taken during a transitional period of time when such places would be devoid of life. liek the infamous "backrooms" photo was actually of some offices in the process of getting refurbished. and most of the other liminal photos are of places during closing hours or long since abandoned.

The "Liminal Space" in the internet is just nostalgia and a bunch of phobias. There's nothing to it. By official definition, it's not even a liminal place. Empty Playgrounds, Dead Malls, Weird Swimming Pools aren't even a liminal space. It's just the internet telling you that it is. Stairs, Elevators, Hallways, Corridors, Alleyways etc. now THAT'S a transitional liminal place by it's true definition.
