Margie is a psychiatric nurse, a mother of three and a recent revert to Islam. She grew up as a Catholic girl in Warrnambool but became disillusioned with her religion as she got older. After a few years of study, research and talking to people, she underwent what she calls an intellectual transformation and embraced Islam.
Margie is still getting used to some of the everyday aspects of being a Muslim, like the discipline required to pray five times a day, how to correctly wear the hijab and the reactions of the general community. Her spiritual and emotional reaction has been quicker. As Margie says, whilst some people turn to valium for calm, she has found it by becoming a Muslim.
Margie’s eldest daughter has just become engaged to a Jewish boy, though they haven’t yet announced this formally. Her future son-in-law was worried about how he would be received by Margie but her only beef was his support for the Carlton Football Club.
Margie has been meaning to get her driver’s licence for 25 years. With help she hopes that she will soon be mobile and better able to pursue her goal of becoming a forensic crime scene investigator.
We follow Margie and other women from the Muslim community and explore the Islamic “sisterhood” in action.
