How I Bought My First Mountain Bike 2024 Trek Marlin 5 Gen 3

Nice post. After several years as a road cyclist the Trek Marlin 5 was my first entry level Mountain Bike. I’ve since moved to the Marlin 8, which is an amazingly smooth and affordable bike to ride. I would never, ever buy a new bike from a department store, but I also understand that not everyone can afford a brand name bike. You buy a bike as you would buy a suit. You want it to fit and you want it to last. Not doing so could actually cause injury. You also expect the business you choose to buy from to stand behind it. 😮

That’s terrible what happened to you at Dicks, I’m glad everything worked out for you worked out for you with the marlin, it’s a great bike. There’s always good and bad employees in every industry. I’m at the crossroads between these two bikes and fortunately the dicks in my location has an old guy who came from a well known mom and pop shop so it’s like a real bike shop….. with that said I’m leaning towards the nishiki do to the 11-1 drive train for the steep hills compared to the 9-1 drive train on the marlin. Just personal preference and that I’m out of shape. Sorry for your frustration, I’ve been there with places like auto shops which is another story.

Great story, man! I’m thinking about picking up the Gen 2 bike, mainly for commuting through the snowy winters in Boston. And yes, I’m definitely getting a kickstand! I won’t be doing any trail riding, so no hazard for me. BTW, how much weight can the kickstand handle?

Thanks!! Definitely can’t go wrong with the Gen 2! I feel like the kickstand is a must, but as far as the weight, I wouldn’t expect a lot since it’s mainly used to hold the bike up by itself. Please consider subscribing!

Have same exact bike (minus kickstand 😂) Getting back into riding after about 35 years (yes I'm old) and I would honestly suggest swapping out pedals for something else
