Nick when you took the new engine bits your car was in parc ferme and according to rule 34.6 of the sporting rule regulation changing an engine component while in parc ferme will result in a grid penalty which will make you start from 20th place (22nd place with 11 teams on the grid) so yes you did do something to get a penalty.

The ICE on this engine is really really broken. Many people having their engines just completely dead by the 4th-5th race. And they aren't even using ferrari engines......

idea for forza horizon 5 worst car challenge: get all the blew crew to build and tune the worst car they can make. then everyone swaps cars so they drive someone elses car. then do challenges and everyone tries their best to win in someone elses car. whoever built the car that gets the least amount of points wins. for some added chaos (optional), you can do things like turn on collisions so people can sabatoge their own car on purpose.

something like this happened to me except it was a safety car.... 3 laps left and i get a safety car. I was in first. Didn't take a penalty. and when it ended, all of the cars were ghosted and ahead of the safety car and were getting dq'd and after it was all figured out, with one lap left, the game said to get back into original position, which apparently the game decided was 5th, with one lap left.... then I had to snake around all of the dq'd cars and eventually just make it to 4th... new games these days are so broken and unfinished because they can just go back and update bugs... Glad I spent $70 on this game haha
