I loved the video. I have some suggestions for future barrels. 1. Flood and drain pipe to keep the holes from getting plugged up by debris and roots. 2. I don't know how but something to support the bottom. I just don't trust the screws as only support. If I make a video I will give you credit for getting me started and implement my ideas. I tend to over engineer but that's because I'm lazy AF and hate cleaning up when things do work exactly how I imagine it should work.

I put a cross piece between the two legs on the short side. Then ran a long board between the cross members. To get the height right I flipped planter over, laid the long board across the barrels then screwed the short boards into legs so that they were under the long board. Finally screwed the long board into the cross pieces. This gave the legs extra support and supported the barrels.

I did similar for planters, but just put anti roll “feet” on the bottoms. 2 pieces of oil based tractor primer coated 2x6. Planteds are for the covered porch on an 1840s built house. Planters between the columns, work from the ground. Barrels here are still $10, wood was free from the off cuts pile in the barn. Paint is just Majic brand from TSC, left over from a truck frame project. Teaching farm and agricultural heritage reserve, unofficial county history museum annex. Will be making a few for the museum proper as well, raised like your set up. 2x6 white oak that was cut in 1964. Heavy as sin but outlasts pine by decades.

My husband used 2x2 and it is very sturdy and it cut our cost on materials tremendously. 2x2 was just as heavy as the 2x4 and it worked out great

After you cut your first 3 boards, I would have attached all 3, as you did. Then, I would have attached a 4th one, uncut, onto the end of the 2nd one. Then, I would have attached the first one to the 4th one. Then, when you attach the 3rd one, you can cut it back to where it needs to be cut. That way, you are not juggling one board that is attached, with 2 other ones that are not attached, with a 4th one that also is not attached, just to make a cut on that 4th one with a skillsaw, jugsaw or sawsall. And, since you said that the top is usually not the same as the bottom, do the same thing for the 5th board at the other end, since it probably won't be the same length as the 4th board anyhow. Sorry if that is confusing. I did the best I could with words, that would have been so much easier to show with a video.

I built the same beds, the same way and the legs collapsed, don't know if it was because the ground wasn't flat, I used 3inch screws in legs, one fell forward and one fell backwards have to figure out how to reinforce the legs to support the weight

Yeah, just knowing my luck, I would use a brace at the bottom of the barrel similar to the top square edge. Probably would only need to be 1" by 4", just enough to keep it from moving in the first place.

Just found your channel, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, I truly appreciate it. Not sure where you're located, I'm in FL, cant touch the barrels for under 25 if you're lucky. Need to get the power tools out and give it a whirl. What a great helper you have. Best wishes
