What a wonderful project. neatly explained & background music was smoothing. I am looking in to having small greenhouse in my garden here in UK. Looked at many ways of doing rather than buying from THE companies. Looked at with cement blocks and this . I am going with you on this. I am UK For the negative commentators:- If you have nothing constructive to add then say nothing I came to this video to lean and oh boy, I did find yet another way to use Pallets. I am in process of making garden bench, raised bed and preparation table with hand wash basin, a bed and dog bath with pallets. I might post the video but not sure as negative comments will put me off. Thanks again for lovely project....

Those are reusable pallets. Those are new. They are expensive. Pallets painted blue or red like that means they want them back. Without and explanation of some rare circumstance, I suspect theft more than recycling. Might not be the case here ( theft ) but that is hundreds of dollars worth of pallets.
@izzimichaels28925 жыл бұрын
@@ItsNotMeItsYou007 you are correct, but there are a hundred explanations. maybe his father in law owns a shipping company and gave them to him? no reason to suspect theft. i only know what you said is correct because a friend of mine gave me a few of the blue pallets, and he told me the same thing....(he was the rightful owner)
@ItsNotMeItsYou0075 жыл бұрын
@@izzimichaels2892 Like I said, there may be another explanation but the fact is pallets like that belong to a company that RENTS them out. They are meant to be returned. I used to work for a major food warehouse. They pay daily rent on those pallets. I even doubt that your friend had the right to give you pallets. So a supplier ships out something on those pallets. The pallet disappears and they pay rent on it for a long time. Just because a pallet is shipped to your jobsite or warehouse, does not mean that it now belongs to you. If they were not expecting to get the pallet back, they use much cheaper pallets.
@izzimichaels28925 жыл бұрын
@@ItsNotMeItsYou007 makes sense, but my friend explained that he owned them, they are the better pallets etc....never mentioned renting them. but either way thanks for the info!

Kudos for designing and building your own! My ex and I argued for years about greenhouses, and after the divorce, I was free to do as I chose. This summer, I hope to build my 7th greenhouse. My first house was 12' x 24', and was built over 2 green hemlock raised beds. I used a jig to bend 3/4" EMT for the bows...still standing after 9 Maine winters.Total cost, including skin was $250. Over time, I figured out ways to all but eliminate wood, and I started using fencing top-rail (and a hoop bender) for the hoops, and line post to set them. The 2 biggest houses were 12' x 60' and the only wood was for the door frames. They were for an ambitious school garden project, and the cost was just under $1.000 each (about half of a kit cost). It's great to see people doing stuff!

I built a pallet greenhouse too. I also wrapped the bottom in plastic and found it did two things. 1. Stopped most of the airflow into the greenhouse wich is important. 2. The moisture gets trapped in between the plastic on the bottom and pallet wood. Can cause mildew and mold issues. Also you may want to consider adding a exhaust fan blowing out to pull the heat. That thing will get real warm in there
@RusticByNature6 жыл бұрын
I almost put the pallets on the plastic, I wish I did only because we just moved and I cant move it right now due to it being frozen to the ground. Adding an exhaust fan is a good idea.

Hi it's so wonderful to revisit and tell you my story Your project was so inspirational that I just collected pallets, double glazed doors from my redevelopment project and now I am going to build green house with it. I am from UK and I need idea how to keep optimum temperature as I am thinking of growing finger limes and warm climate crops / fruits in it all year round. I am looking at the possibility of using solar water heater but already had moans from the companies- it can't be done. I already have solar water panel on my wall giving 24/7 hot water without gas/electricity and i want similar to the green house but for heating. And can't word is not in my vocabulary. you or your subscribers come up with the idea, I would be grateful to hear it. thanks again for inspiration...

Thank you for sharing your story, I love it. Since I live in Alaska I am not going to even try to heat my greenhouse we can get down to -30F/-34C in the winter. Not sure of your Latitude or how long the sun is up but I have seen a solar heater made from soda/pop cans but that will not work at night. There is a rocket mass stove, but you would need to feed the stove wood. Using black poly tube coiled up with compost on top of it, used to heat water for a thermal heat mass. The most costly (money and work) would be an earth battery but a power source is needed to run the fans. Hope some of these ideas give you some ideas. Thanks again for sharing your story.

Thank you for making this video. I'm looking to start going to a local store which gives out free pallets so I'll definitely start gathering them up to use for this sort of project. The way that you do it makes it look so much easier than if I were to go with my idea of disassembling the pallets, which runs the risk of breaking them. This way, they're functional, and the best part - because I know my roommate won't be on board with this, I can cover up the fact that they are pallets by adding siding to the outside of the walls and then nobody would even know what it's made of but me - and whoever I decide to invite inside. Maybe I'll even make a pallet floor, clean up the inevitable sad bits, and add some insulation and a floor someday and it'll be my tiny house. I'm not sure. It sounds fun. And spending the night out there every so often couldn't hurt. Again, thanks for the video. I can't wait to get started on this future project. Best to all.

Rustic by Nature: I used pallets for my "composting" walls and I found that after a year, they showed good deal of decay and deterioration. Perhaps your greenhouse will hold up better because it will not get rained on. My concern is that your pallets touch the ground and that is where I found the most decay because there was no insulating or protective barrier. After all the work you put into this project how has it held up in the last year? By the way, it looks great. I like the benches raised off the floor.

Yeah... Alaska is like.... the opposite end of Florida for the US... No one gives a shit about it and kinda just keeps it around for its revenue of landscape. If it weren't for that and it's tactical advantage we wouldn't give two shits about that god forsaken place.

@Time4Truth Obviously not. I agree. It's stunningly beautiful! So it's cold in winter & has a short growing season. It also has great people & maybe the best fishing anywhere - or used to. Sheesh...What a dumb & pointless remark. I'm not a big fan of Florida, but it has it's own kind of beauty & value. Too bad it'll be swallowed up by rising oceans though. That's sure gonna be a disaster once thousands of miles of roads & buildings going up the coasts around the world, end up getting submerged. I feel so bad for sea creatures already, with so much plastic, spilled oil & dumped barrels of toxic chemicals dumped by industries, decades ago, now rusting out. Sorry for the doom & gloom... Lovely greenhouse..

@@joeincogno265 How old are you? I've seen the coastlines changing in my lifetime & now Arctic melt, & loss of snow cover on the Himalayans & other areas has accelerated. All that water has to go somewhere. At the same time available fresh water for humans, livestock & other human activity is diminishing. If we could build more desalination plants around the globe, maybe we could strike a balance. Unfortunately, the process is very costly, & at this point, requires using fossil fuels, & most oceans are polluted with plastics & nuclear plants jlike Fukushima just keep dumping their radioactive nuclear waste in the oceans, & deadly, often radioactive fracking fluids keeps seeping into groundwater, destroying our limited potable water, in order to to try to capture more natural gas. So - we need more people paying attention to how our global resources are being used. Denial, or ignorance is part of the problem. By burning so much fossil fuel, there's more CO2 in our atmosphere. We breathe oxygen & exhale CO2. Left in an airtight room, eventually all the available oxygen would be converted to CO2 - even if there's just one person in the room. It's just a fact. Look at coastline maps. Research parts of the world where people have had to leave their homes & relocate. Look at houses falling into the sea as the coastline has encroached so much in other areas, people dare not stay in their homes during hurricanes. Look at ancient maps & you'll see the way the continents used to look. We live on a volatile planet, & the climates have ever been changing, but now we're able to see how our use of fossil fuels, plus the fact that there are now around 7 Billion people on the planet, & we've been clearing trees so we can build cities & factories & roadways & there are greedy people clearing out the rainforest which we must slow down - to preserve the kind of atmosphere we need, to continue to have rain water in the way we've always had it as long as humans roamed this planet... Human greed will end life on this earth as we know it & our govt & other govts are letting it happen. Maybe the Billionaires don't feel rich enough yet. Then there are those who believe these are "The End Times", so don't care about trying to manage our resources for future generations, since they think that god will be taking them up to heaven & they don't care if the greedy industrialists destroy every single beautiful landscape & every tree & every reservoir of fresh, clean water. It's our complacency which allows them to destroy this planet.

Excellent project, affordable and easy. My son and I dug a 12 X 22 hole in our (also tiny) yard we went down about 6'- originally it was because our electric got shut off and we had a huge crop of (Totally legal) cannabis we needed to save from darkness. Hard times can be an excellent teacher. If you dig a deep trench in yours it will help stabilize the temp cooler in summer--warmer in winter. Some folks do bore holes 10' to 12' deep 8" wide with plastic drainage tube liners, I think it does the same thing.

Thanks for commenting. Here in Alaska, the ground temps in the summer are in the high 30's low 40's at least that is the water temperature coming out of the faucet is. The angle of the sun would not allow the sun to get to the plants if they were in a hole. We moved the greenhouse to our new place last year and I did not get a shelf built to put the plants on and they were very lanky. I had them on cender blocks.

Last summer I did put vents at both ends because it was getting up to 120 inside. I have plans to upgrade the roof to a more durable material. Thanks for watching

Great idea, however if you set it directly on the ground, you're inviting rot and termites.

I enjoyed the video. Great idea for a green house. Nice job. With 4 people yould would be able to finish the green house in 1 day.

INSTACRUISING I agree people are stupid . I believe the ones that dislike wonderful videos like this , sit on their asses all day and don’t know how to have a good time with themselves and their families . And support their families !!!

I know this might be late, but I also notice that you said you were in Alaska, but give this some thought... Why not insulate the pallets with 2" foam and in the style of a stucco building for warmth and cosmetic looks?
@RusticByNature6 жыл бұрын
Not too late. 3 weeks ago we moved so we will be taking apart the greenhouse (once it's not frozen to the ground) and then rebuilding it. I will be making some changes. For the cosmetic, we have talked about fake log look. Thanks for watching.

Sir this is an absolutely wonderful build. Thank you, I could see myself building one or two here in the UK. Thank you for the idea, enjoy! Love the very neat effect with the wallmart bags. Great recycling!

Thank you I'm going to build me one how do you heat itt
@RusticByNature5 жыл бұрын
I’m glad I inspired you. I live in Alaska where the winter temperature can get to -30 so I don’t worry about heating it. I use it to extend the growing season and to keep it warner during the summer when the temps are around 65 degrees all summer. This summer though has been a little different due to the extreme heat we have had. Its been in the 80s and 90s. When it gets into the upper 70s most Alaskans start complaining it’s too hot. lol

Nice use of reclaimed materials, might treat the pallets with linseed oil or another natural varnish when it's dry, I like the mandolin music rock on.

Can you explain the rain gutter watering system? Also does that water leak through the Walmart bags?
@RusticByNature6 жыл бұрын
The soil mixture will wick water up from the rain gutter, so I don't water from the top just from the bottom. Thanks for watching and commeting.

I love pallet structures. Reminds me of a pallet tongue. Which is very godly. Renewable resources.

Oh dear, That is a hell of a fire risk so close to the house plus pallet wood will rot very quickly. Hope all goes well!

I was pretty skeptical when I saw how you attached the top 2x4's and the little brackets. But now it looks good especially the ribbing. I'm curious about how you will regulate the temperature once the door is attached? By the way, how do your neighbors feel about it? Is there any room left for the kids and dogs to play, lol?
@RusticByNature5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. I have moved and we also moved the greenhouse since posted this video. Last summer it got to hot even with the windows i had in it. Our new place is almost 4 areas with lots of trees, no worries about my neighbors.

@RusticByNature6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I feel it was decent harvest but could have been a lot better. It took so long to get this built that by the time I had everything in it more than half the summer was gone.

That looks really good. I am in USDA growing zone 7 and I keep lettuce and spinach going through the winter in my unheated greenhouse. You have electricity in there, right? On coldest days I have to cover them further in the greenhouse.
