How I care for my Zelenkoa onusta (syn. Oncidium onustum )

Zelenkoa is a monotypic genus (it has one single specie). These orchids grow on cactuses in Peru and Ecuador in areas with high light, little rainfall but high air humidity. It is really best to mount it as the roots need to dry out quickly. During the dormancy, hardly any watering is needed. While growing, I mist it every day (with a good occasional mini soaker). You can monitor the bulbs (plumpness) but also the leaves; if the leaves turn soft, it is time to water. Hard leaves mean the plant is properly hydrated. Drenching rains are deadly for this plant. It blooms in October/November and then goes dormant for several months. You can start normal watering when new growths appear in the spring.
