I started using trail maps purchased at my hubby’s motorcycle shop to find my way around trails in the national forests. They are not near as precise as what this video shows we can do with maps. For the first time since 2002, using your method shown within this video is by far the best option I’ve seen to start doing more personalized maps for our friends and family for our trail riding. It is exactly what we’ve been looking for all the way down to the laminator. I am one of those who had to go to Kinkos and pay a fortune for them to laminate our hand written detailed maps. This is perfect and the answer to our stressful time-consuming map project every camping/dirt riding year. Thank you for sharing. Thank you for sharing the links for the laminator. I just bought laminator and laminate. Much cheaper than outsourcing for printing. I also wish to thank my fellow Army friend Edward T for sending your link for this video to me. Sandra, I am glad you found value in this video. Even though I filmed this video, I almost did not release it as I was not sure how many people would be interested in using paper/laminated maps. The links to the laminator are in the video description. Mine has been kicking since the video was recorded. In fact, I am using it to make 3"x5" field cards, too. Nice. Ive played with the free version but not explored the paid version. I’ve also used Caltopo in the past as well.

The free version is good, but the Pro version is nice if you spend a lot of time in the backcountry. Once you create these maps, you can also record your route in the app and follow your route. The additional downloadable layers (like topo, satellite, etc) are a nice bonus. I’ll take a look at Caltopo.

Any 2024 update, is AllTrails still good, or did Gaia or Caltopo win out? Happy New Year!

I'm still paying for the pro version of AllTrails, but I only use it for hiking.

Thanks for the video and the lamination tip. I use Gaia GPS and can print maps to PDF in a similar manner. I also use a paid version, I don't know if the map printing is available on the free version. A nice addition on the Gaia map is it shows a compass point with North declination. Also in Gaia when I am making a route it will snap to the path or road in most cases. Nothing against All Trails, seems to be a very capable app. I just initially preferred Gaia and have stayed with it. 73 de AI6XG

Thanks for the quick overview of Gaia. I'm a fan of which ever tool works best. The PDF print outs on Alltrails also provide a recent declination reading. There's also a smart route feature on AllTrails where it snaps to routes, but the feature tries to out smart me and never seems to do what I want, so I just disable it and create the routes free hand. You're at least the third person that has recommended Gaia recently. Something to look at when time permits. 73
