Күн бұрын

In this video Anthony shares how he would approach making a Dubstep synth line, 100% analog. Using his vintage MS-20 and Vintage Dr. Click.
Anthony's musical touch as both composer and performer is connected with some of the most influential creative minds over the last 40 years. He’s composed and conducted original orchestral scores for over 80 feature films including Young Guns, Internal Affairs, The Man From Elysian Fields, 15 Minutes and Planes, Trains & Automobiles, been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for his symphonic work "In the Family Way", written over one thousand TV commercials in a myriad of musical styles, co-founded Levels Audio Post (LA's premiere post production facility) and performed and arranged on big-box-office films and influential hit records such as Michael Jackson's Thriller.
His extensive work as a young arranger, orchestrator and performer for Quincy Jones, Jack Nitzsche, Lamont Dozier, Arthur Rubenstein and Giorgio Moroder was vital in launching his own career. His early years pioneering modular analog synthesizers along with his wide-ranging music scholarship positioned Anthony at the center of the music technology revolution. He attended the University of Southern California School of Music as a piano and composition major.

I love to see that a producer like you, who actually worked on MJ's Thriller, can show some appreciation for newer genres like dubstep, that to many are just noise. And it talks so deeply to me because I love the 80s, and I love dubstep. Thanks for making these videos and for sharing your experience.

I do something similar with my modular. I’ll use a clock divider or gate sequencer with a speed or rate input. I’ll use a stepped voltage to increase and decrease the rate of the gate outputs. It’s instant IDM.

After watching this video I used a clock divider to send different note lengths to an Intelligel Planar (vector mixer/quad paner) to send to a filter. I can either use the joystick on the Planar to improvise what notes I send to the filter or use CV to automate things. This video was VERY helpful!👍 Thank you!

So many layers of awesome in this. The MS20 sounds like a friggin beast. I also want to point out how amazing it is that the tempo on the Dr Click looks like an odometer. So is the Dr Click sending CV to the filter on the MS20? I'm still a little confused on what CV is.
@bob-rogers
@bob-rogers Жыл бұрын
CV is short for Control Voltage. The Dr. Click is making clocked-looping envelopes which it sends as voltage. It's patched into the MS-20's filters so it opens and closes them in time.

I must admit, what with the font being quite square I had been misreading “click” as, er, something else! This sounds sick as heck though 👍 the MS-20 rhythms and filter sweeps kinda remind me of Rollin and Scratchin by Daft Punk!

Sometimes I'll run a copy of the drums through a comparator or a follower, which gives me an extra gate to work with to add a sub-melody or an accent to play with.....and by it's nature, its sync'd rhythmically.

Very nice, Anthony Marinelli! I feel like I'd expect the amplitude level to drop/reduce between each modulation provided by the Dr Click machine. Maybe that emphasis is desired only at some places in a mix, however.

hey, just want to remind you that you create a pre-techno movement with Michael Jackson's Thriller within analog synthesizer programming. I'm so glad you started posting on the internet, people have been trying to find you via threads for quite awhile! you have changed the course of music theory forever by your work, and helped usher techno from a disco era to an 80s kickoff at age 22 alongside Michael. thank you, music theorists/historians/artists/producers/engineers are grateful for you! your popular sound then went into The Wizard's hands, and young teenage high school Belleville at the time after The Wizard's hands: then going into hip hop legacy, J Dilla + Slum Village. you just helped me piece together music history, and theory trace, thanks so much! Godbless you!

Could also throw some bitcrusher effects into that with a S&H using a fast enough trigger rate. Although I saw it demonstrated on a computer, my loose understanding is that there are analog S&H units. Might be neat to play with at some point.

You dont need to do micro edits. You can make dubstep basslines on a 2 oscillator wavetable synth, and technically you could build a analog wavetable, but it would probably be prohibitively costly to do so if you made analog wavetables with more than a couple waveforms per wavetable. Morphing between waveforms within a wavetable could be done with an lfo.

If you want to check out some other cool modern synth music, you should really check out death grips. bro just get better drum loudness on snare and kick, boost high frequncies on hats, low cut them to remove low-mid mud, then add a heavy sub bass underneath the growl, and make it follow the gate. Boom now ur making real good dubstep on analog xD (oh and volume sidechain for when kick and snare hits to duck down everything else. a little bit at least)

In this case instead of using an LFO to modulate the filter, he's using the DR. Click as a modulation source as he can adjust rhythms for the modulation with a single button press instead of a relatively precise LFO rate control.
