For most artists, it's not about the money, it's about making enough money from the art to actually be able to do the art in the first place. Otherwise known as a catch-22. This catch-22 is devious, because most artists only want to earn enough to survive and make art. But, in order to get good enough you have to do non-art and save up enough money to quit your job and do art (which is not something artists are good at). It's doubly devious, because even if you're the rare artist with that level of structure and patience, by the time you get good enough to make money, you're so good, you can earn tons of money. So, "just making enough to live" is also nearly impossible, because almost no one pays for "almost good art". But I like the idea of one big project to launch a career. I would like to see you dive deeper into this. Perhaps take on a starving artist, help them create a launchable project, and film everything. I am currently building a service that connects artists to other artists and business people. It's finds you a complete team for your project or a project team that needs your exact skills. That's my solution attempt to the millennia old problem. Instead of making the artist do everything, allow everyone to specialize in what they love.
@scottfrenchart Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion. That sounds like a great idea for a video but a long term one given the time involved. Good luck with the the service you're building.

Thank you! Very inspiring. This channel will certainly grow. You have a gift to convey your message in a very calm and concise way and your subject is most relevant to anyone trying to bring her or his photography to a level of real art. Regardless of what kind of photography that might be! There are enough channels obsessing with gear already. Now I just have to make up my mind what I truly want to say with my photography, why I do it in the first place… as simple as it sounds, this is very hard.

This is very interesting. I'm intrigued by the process by which artists conceive and organise their work. It often feels like some of this knowledge and understanding is kept behind a velvet rope of some kind. I've also found the idea very challenging - I approach creativity in a fairly cowardly way, firing off random shots of strangers, so if any of them works out then it's a pleasant surprise. Coming at it in this conscious, deliberate way seems very frightening, which is probably the point. Much to think about here, and I thank you for it.

Very good video. I've been a working photographer for over 3 decades ( Unit stills/TV publicity) and have never produced anything of my own. I tend to overthink everything and end up dismissing most ideas I have. Somehow sitting and trying to think of a project is counter productive. I've no ambition to sell, but i'd like to produce a set of pictures.......or in 'art speak' a body of work, but finding that definitive project is soooo hard. Kudos to you for achieving these pictures, they are quite unique and that alone gives them an attraction. Some of them remind me of David Hockney's 'Splash' congratulations on some excellent photography, and your print sales.

There must be something that you're fascinated about. Like for me, it's water. Its reflections, its patterns from the slight breeze blowing over it, the way water reacts to the rocks in there, the waves; freezing it with a fast shutter speed or using long exposures. There is always something to experiment with, with water. I can not get enough of it.
@2112zone7 ай бұрын
@@danlightened Yes, I get that, Dan. It's not so visual with me. That sounds counterintuitive, but my interest in photography is to make visual an emotional response. I like the work of Michael Ackerman for this reason. I guess it's as close to poeticising as you can get, at the risk of sounding pretentious.
@danlightened7 ай бұрын
@@2112zone Water has a deeper connection for me, and hopefully many. To an alien, a place where waves have been crashing for years may seem boring and bland. But there's certainly something that makes people spend hours there. Waves crashing have a therapeutic sound. They sound like white noise. And any time waves crash or water falls in a waterfall, they emit negative ions, which are good for us. I've always felt a sense of calm and tranquility near water bodies. And also, if I can relate the most to an element of the 5 elements, it's water. Seemingly calm and unsuspecting at the surface but has immense depth. I think we all can be a bit more like water. Like Bruce Lee said, "Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend."

Thanks for sharing this great video. I've been into photography for over 35 years. In fact my first sale of my photography was 36 years ago. I was 18 and had an opportunity to shoot supporting images for a magazine article someone I knew had been asked to write. It got me thinking that maybe there was something to this. Sadly, I didn't pursue it and spent the many years that have passed since as mainly a hobbyist, or maybe you'd say "enthusiast". In recent years I have been more active and engaged, doing some "semi-pro" level work with the goal of really just off-setting some of my costs. Photography can be expensive! By off-setting costs, I can shoot what I love to shoot and not worry at all about whether or not anyone will buy it. What you've clued me into perhaps, is that I likely have a body of work - all that stuff I shot just "for myself", that could be a viable collection with some value. Who knows... maybe I'll put it all out there and see what happens. With any luck I can earn enough to replace my aging camera, LOL.
