Tipp for people who try to draw long lines traditionally. Draw from the elbow and not only with your wrist. Helps a lot with Digital art as well, but in digital you can always zoom out to negate the fact, that the line is long. When you draw with your wrist, you have more control over a small area where you can compensate for small changes with your fingers. If you keep your hand in the air while stabilizing with your elbow, the curve of your line will be much longer and you could finetune the line with the wrist and fingers as well. Hope it helps. bye :*

fr, I remember when I first heard this advice I didn't put it into practice right away until I got frustrated with a drawing and remembered this tip. When I used my elbow It was insane how much easier it was to draw a neat single line instead of a bunch of small lines connected together
@rowanfrankert2949
@rowanfrankert2949 2 жыл бұрын
Also if you wanna practice this without wanting to chance ruining a drawing: practice with a pencil, and try to draw the same line on top of itself repeatedly; I tend to do at least 10 tries per line before moving to another. And do different kinda of line--stick straight, slight curve, more curved, etc. (This also makes a good warm up, to get your arm and wrist moving before diving in). Also please try to use your elbow more in general, it'll save you from carpal tunnel down the line (stretch those wrists and hands!)

does that technique work on something small like an ipad? drawing on a huge easel makes sense, but you can’t really make big motions with an ipad right?
@xXdimatryXx
@xXdimatryXx 2 жыл бұрын
@@PianoMyHeart It's not that necessary in digital inking, but it can help. Zoom and automatic stroke smoothing are a great cheat, to make the line look great, so you can just use those. It can help though to train your hand for longer lines as well. An example would be: You want a long line, but if you zoom out too much the pen will be less precise (Imagine drawing detailed eyes on a coin. No matter how small your tool, it gets difficult to have details) If your hand is trained already, you can zoom out just enough, that your line would cover the whole screen. I have an ipad air and my wrist alone cannot cover the entire screen if I have to draw a diagonal line through the entire thing. That's when my traditional training comes to shine. Btw. It also helps with loose sketching a lot. When your hand is not touching the screen, but just flies over it, you can pick up a lot of speed with your pencil. Sorry if my explanation is confusing at some points. English is not my first language and I have to rephrase the sentences sometimes, because I have not the necessary words to make the optimal sentence work :)

I've been trying to figure out why my linear always comes out weird. I've never considered doing the basic shapes with thin lines and going back in to refine them, I've always just tried to weight lines as I go. This is probably an infinitely better approach, both for my mental health and for my art, lmao. Thank you!

when i dont like how my drawing turns out, about 90% of the time it's because of the subpar lineart i made. i knew that to a point, but i didn't know *why* exactly it looked subpar. i found that of all the artists i watched here on youtube, yours is the closest to how i think while drawing (more on intuition and feel), so now i know what points i'm missing and what i was doing right before. very nice in-depth tutorial. thank you very much

Besides technique, my advice is to tweak the line width variation setting, so that the smallest point isn't 1%. It can create a very unnatural looking result, because with real pens that just isn't possible. Personally, for a fineliner-esque result I use 40% minimum width and use a small brush size for details. On real paper I use the pigma microns so I like to make my digital brushes as close to them as possible. I'm not a huge fan of brush pens but I experiment with them from time to time.

I thought your tangent was wonderful, and made me feel like maybe I can do better line art. Seeing your sketch and hearing you talk about how you feel like a ‘messy’ artist and that you used to hate line art really resonates with how I currently feel. I work traditionally for the most part, and while I love Mucha and Beardsley, I fell in love with the way DaVinci would sketch, and practiced drawing from life with ballpoint pen or microns, with lots of curved cross hatching, everything very organic etc.. trying to tighten a sketch up has been a huge struggle for me. This video was really helpful though and I am excited to try some of these tips out!

thats probably because her canvas size is huge (around 6000×4000 or sth if you pause at 0:12 ). If you're using a smaller canvas size, like the default options, then maybe you can try reducing the depth of the brush in the brush settings as someone else did in another comment

There are more tools in Clip Studio Paint than there are in Procreate for creating lineart. I want to learn how to get the most use out of CSP for creating better lineart. I’ve never been a big fan of inking but I want to like it. I am just looking to learn some techniques so I can create better results and feel more confident in the lineart process. The more tips & techniques I learn about lineart, the more confident I will be to stick to the process and it will be easier to think out of the box to apply it to different types of drawings.

he reason why the sketch looks so good is because of the depth, I would suggest turning the layer opacity really low and going over certain lines that appear thicker on the sketch whilst doing lineart, just make it look cleaner, as well as if the sketch opacity is really low, it’s harder to be disappointed in the lineart, because you cant see the sketch anyway - Fellow Artist, (He/They, if anyone wants to start an argument in my replies and misgender me. /s)

I find it very hard to find a comfortable ergonomic way to draw on my ipad. I prefer sitting on my computer desk with my Cintiq. But when drawing on my ipad on the go, it's always a struggle that I end up giving up. Or sometimes I only use it to draw a loose sketch that I will later import into Photoshop and finish it up on my Cintiq.
