Pretty slick tutorial Bill thank you! I am starting to stack up a few deer, although nowhere near your numbers, and am admittedly not fast at field dressing. I'll be revisiting this video frequently

I make my first incision just below the sternum and cut downwards so I don’t have to worry about puncturing guts. Fixed blade pelvic saw to cut through pelvis and ribcage, force open hips by pressing down which really helps open it up to cool off and pull everything out. Pull everything down and make a cut on each side at the end of the colon to finish detaching the gut pile.

@bill-winke13 күн бұрын
I believe that comes right out with the rest of the internal organs when dressing a doe. It is more of an issue with bucks and you have to cut that out more carefully. I just cut it off where it enters the cavity on a buck and then pull everything through just like a doe and works pretty well. Have a great day.

Normally, it doesn't become an issue until you start to pull the organs out and by the time you get to the bladder it is outside of the cavity so even it is spills it it not a big deal. Thanks for the comment.

Great video as always, Bill! Two things I would recommend in addition: a) to wear single-use gloves to keep the bacteria on your fingers away from the meat and to keep your hands clean in case you have to e.g. drive your car before you can get some water to wash them and b) if you want to cut all the way up trough the ribs when opening up an animal, bring some kind od foldable saw with you like the Felco 600 for example. These do an ecellent job!

I was taught and use basically the same technique. Only thing I do differently is I don’t cut past the sternum, I just cut the diaphragm and reach up in to yank everything out.
@bill-winke12 күн бұрын
That is the way I do it with bucks. Most does have very soft bones near the place where the ribs attach to the sternum and is it super easy to cut through those. This doe was bigger and older and it was a bit harder. Opening them up the entire way is just cleaner and quicker for and allows the carcass to maybe cool out a bit faster. Have a great day.

Nice video Bill! Have you ever used a zipper knife by outdoor edge? They are pretty nice and sure make that trip up the middle easy as the tip is rounded over dull and only the cutting edge makes contact upwards away from the guts and stomach. It’s a beautiful fall in Gods creation! Good luck!

Thanks for all the videos, what about all the human sent left,do you think the gut pile overrides the human sent?
@bill-winke13 күн бұрын
No, the human scent is a way bigger issue than the gut pile. I think deer will ignore a gut pile (I have seen it when hunting stands in the afternoon after gutting deer there in the morning), but the human scent trail is still a problem. There is really no way around it (at least not a realistic or convenient way) - you are going to leave scent and the area will be less productive for the next couple days as a result of educating a few deer that hit your scent trail. But, I have found that during the rut you get away with a bit more than during the early and late season because the bucks are moving so much and aren't staying as close to home so they don't pick up on danger signs as quickly. Good luck.
@rickmoon380613 күн бұрын
@ Bill,thanks for confirming some thoughts I had! We are mostly hunting wood lots on our ag property.We generally use a sled and rope to drag out or can reach the deer with 50 to 60 yards of good rope, hook up to a side by side and pull into ag field or pasture. Very useful when pulling out of creek bottom. Would you consider doing a step by step on how you set you’re mobile tree stands.
@bill-winke12 күн бұрын
@@rickmoon3806 Rick, I can do that eventually. I may have to set a few more before this season is over. I have been doing that since 1990 and use a pretty basic approach. I know there are some high-tech methods out there now with saddles and single sticks, but I prefer to have the stand there and easy to access when I come back. If I was hanging them and not leaving them, I would use a different approach from what I use, for sure. Have a great day.

My main hunting area is a military base. They give you one hour (after legal hunting ends) to be out of the woods. So if I kill a deer close to quitting time which seems like 90% of the time for me then it matters. I also tend to get aways off road and you get no extra time to walk out. You must be out of the woods regardless. Oh, and deer must be dressed-out in the area you are hunting. lol, yes, military bases can be a pain in the butt but if that is all you can hunt then you must do it.
