ETA My sense of smell and taste might have returned eventually without me doing all this, but I'll tell you what I did. I am not saying it will work for everyone, but I hate not to mention it in case someone can benefit. I had no smell or taste. I started putting very pungent scented things close to my nose all day every day. I used a strong onion, garlic, lemon, orange, strong spices, unused coffee grounds, black pepper. I'd do this over and over regardless if I could smell them or not. I'd sniff them, not just hold them under my nose. Finally I started smelling them. It took a week or more , but it did work for me. For awhile I had a constant smell of smoke in my nose. I thought someTHING (not someone) was burning. I started first tasting sour, sweet, salty and spicy, but no distinct taste. I had an aversion to meat and most savory, but did like sweets. It finally improved to where I have my sense of smell and taste back. I surely hope this helps anyone who has lost their sense of taste and smell. I also took ibuprofen for any inflammation that might be going on. Mine may have been a different cause, but hopefully this will work for someone.

I didn’t know it had a name. Parosmia. I’ve had it for 13 months now. 0 smell, 0 taste. The worse is when my brain tries to “attach” a scent to XYZ and gets it wrong. Coffee smells like burnt mud water for example. On any given day, the whole day will smell like old mop water or fumes (car exhaust). I’ve been MRI’d and there’s nothing wrong in my brain 🧠. ENT specialist told me retrain my faceholes with aromatic oils. I can detect menthol because of the cold tingle, and yet isopropyl alcohol doesn’t even register.🤷🏻♂️ This video gave me hope! Thank you.🙏🏼

I've been going through this for close to 2 years as well. What you're saying about difficulty managing weight is definitely true. I gained close to 50 lbs after losing my taste just due to the effect that not being able to taste had on my mental process. It made me wake up every day hoping I could taste something again. I tried to eat different foods and taste different things with absolutely no change in taste or smell. This is one of the most frustrating things I've ever experienced but it's been good in the end. I've definitely grown from it. I've been dieting the last 4 months and I'm down 44 lbs and feeling much better about myself. I was able to clean my sinuses with a navage and regain some of my taste and a little bit of my smell but I still lack most subtle tastes and smells. I've learned to live with it for now but I thank you for posting this because I may go this route some day. Thank you so much!

Every day I would open up smelly things like coffee cans, peanut butter bread, (warning..my poo) etc and tried in my mind to smell or think about the smell. The loss of taste resulted in me not able to eat sardines or slimy foods. It grossed me out without the taste. I like to think that trying to smell helped me regain the smell. I am SO glad you got this fixed! Until I saw your original video about this post covid issue, I didn't think it would be any big deal to lose taste and smell. But your video convinced me how wretched life could be with this problem. Anyway, I'm just glad you and your family got this figured out.

Damn Jessica, After 2 and a 1/2 years of having this same Symptom I'm Sadly going to have to report to you that I only have about 40 maybe 50% Of former smelling and tasting sensations. I know exactly what you've been going through and how you felt and it is not good! Many times I thought to myself, "Is this going to be terminal"? Will I have to live out the rest of my days minus What I used to know and could count on. Very pleased to hear what your prognosis has been, And I'll be watching the rest of the video to learn what you did to recover some of that loss.

I'm on week 8 of no taste or smell. I've tried the burnt orange/sugar trick and it didn't work. I'm smelling essential oils daily, and pretty much everything that has a strong smell, some I can detect and others I can't. Not being able to taste is most frustrating for me. I will give it six months and if it's not back, I'm calling David. Thank you for doing this video, it has given me hope.

This is incredible! I have anosmia … I have NEVER had a sense of smell (and that means only basic taste, since so much is based on scent). I can NOT imagine what you and your sweet family members dealt with during this time. Good for you for continuing the hunt!! ❤ And yes, I cried with you and love that you are willing to be so thorough AND vulnerable with all of us! Happiest of New Years!🎉

i had the worst flu of my life over Christmas of 2019 (2-3 months before the first documented cases of C*v!d hit the States.) I lost sense of taste and smell for at least 6 months. It was bizarre, and the senses came back very very slowly. Super weird feeling.

So happy for you and your family! We had c* around the same time as you - with the same symptoms you mentioned in this video. Our smell/taste came back within a week (mostly) however one little thing for me that is so annoying is anytime I get a whiff of perfume or cologne, I have a “cigarette smoke” smell in my nose for the rest of the day! It’s so annoying, but after seeing this video, I’m just glad it isn’t any worse than that. Thank you for sharing your story! 🎀

I’ve had Parosmia since the end of March of this year. I’ve lost 112lbs. I totally understand what you’ve been through. Protein shakes is the only thing I’ve been able to do
@incognitocat555 Жыл бұрын
That is so sad. I'm so sorry. My mom has also lost 100 lbs or so, but it's been more slowly, over the course of a year. She chokes down the protein shakes, too. Please make sure to eat or you will die. That's not healthy to lose that much weight so fast. My mom's hair is falling out, and her kidneys are a little bit damaged from the muscle wasting. I'm going to take her to this doctor in Bryan, TX to see if it will work for her, too.

I’m so glad for you and your family that you’re feeling better. After 2 years, I really can’t imagine what you went thru. You mentioned that some people made comments about the CRNA was “just a nurse and not a doctor “, and other negative comments. Well I actually took the time to look him up, and he is extremely well educated and qualified. And even did a pain management fellowship after his masters degree that isn’t required. And because he is a CRNA, he has to have a MD, in the pain management practice. He’s responsible for his patients and so is the doctor.

Just about the time I saw your progress, there were stories popping up that some in the medical community were making the links between auto-immune disorders and COVID related Parosmia. I immediately thought of you. It would be interesting if you have a link between this therapy and your auto-immune questions.

This is wonderful news. Been struggling with this also for almost a year now - thankfully I never completely lost sense of smell, but the "dumpster juice brew" analogy is spot-on. I've just been doing the pinch-the-nose method. Thankfully, there are not too many things that are 'off'. Very happy for you that you all had such great response to the treatment!

This video made me cry! I'm so happy you guys regained most of your sense of smell and taste back to normal again. After having Covid in 2020, I lost my sense of smell as well. It came back, but things like bacon smelled rancid for a while after. I didn't have it nearly as badly as you guys did and I did return to normal eventually, but I could see how terrible this would be for all four of you. I'm so happy you were able to learn about that nurse and have him help you get back to normal! Hope you have a wonderful 2023, and enjoy all the coffee and bacon your heart desires! 💛

I feel fortunate that my sense of taste was only a bit off for about two weeks before going back to normal. I have a friend who's mom hasn't had any sense of taste or smell since she got it early 2020 so I'm going to send this video to them to see if they've heard of this.

Thanks for a very informative video. I have had anosmia for about 15 years, which was not associated with Covid. When I first got it, I did experience the foul smell for a few days, and then I could smell nothing. I did have sinus surgery 5 or 6 years ago, and did have some instances where I could briefly smell things, but it is rare; and, as you pointed out, you actually forget smells. Although I have no bad experiences, my sense of taste is only what my tongue senses, so about 80% of food's taste is gone for me; and I am left only with sweet, sour, bitter, etc. I am happy to hear you and your family have been able to overcome your problem.

Dixie, I’m so glad you posted this video! I think I’ve watched about every video you’ve ever made in preparation for my last section hike on the AT, and I, too, had lost my sense of taste, and smell for quite some time. For a while there, I wasn’t sure that I was ever going to get it back again like you did. Everything tasted like chemicals, just like you mentioned in your video. Please pop all the great videos that you do, keep up the great Content😁

What worked for me was a Psilocybin microdose at towards the tail end of my COVID infection. It instantly brought smell and taste back and I never had a problem after that :). So glad you found something that worked! (Maybe Psilocybin could help with the remaining issues you are having. Worth a try. I feel like the neurogenesis would be helpful).

I've had parosmia from Covid, too. Describing it as changing familiar smells to a chemical smell really resoneates with me. Studies have shown that Covid actually causes a small amount of brain damage which is what causes a loss of smell. Luckily for me, I've had allergies to all sorts of things since I was in high school, so I'm used to not being able to smell much of anything, and eating anyway.
@robertafanelli-davis3622 Жыл бұрын
I believe that! My covid experience was ALL neurological. Terrible headache/dizziness/fatigue/brain fog. I mean headache that would NOT go away, miserable. The taste/smell was gone the second day. 2 years now.

Wow!! Thanks for telling this story! I have had a somewhat similar experience with finding the person who had changed the trajectory of my life 25 years ago. Briefly, I was dxed with schizophrenia and in and out of psyche wards for over a couple decades. I had seizures that were not under control. He told me I was not schizophrenic and that I had temporal lobe epilepsy. He said I would always be depressed and my life out of control until they were in excellent control. He got them under control and they stayed that way. And they were for 40 years. I have never been hospitalized for psychiatric illness again. They recently came back and I found him again and he does Zoom. One health care professional can really make a difference if they are willing to step out of the easy way of doing everything everyone always does. And yeah, I give David a huge amt of credit!! It does take courage.

However, there are things that I still cannot smell to this day & its sad! Every once in a while, I get a whiff of something & i think it might truly be the way it smells but not sure.. I’m so happy for you. In January 2020 I got covid. Lost my sense of taste and smell completely. It was psychologically devastating because I rely on my sense of taste so much. I can taste any meal snd tell you all the ingredients so I can make it myself. Eating is so enjoyable because I can taste every ingredient. It makes me hate junk food. How wonderful your family found this solution. I went to my acupuncturist who helped me so much. And he had no idea why I lost it. He just threw everything at it. Later I found out it was a symptom of covid. Thanks for sharing this. Sometimes the most random thing can be the solution. I’m glad you didn’t give up. People think losing sense of sight and hearing and touch is devastating. But smell and taste are a huge part of our lives. It can be super debilitating. I’m glad you didn’t give up. Thanks for posting

My Grandma lost her sense of smell, for a couple of years. At my parent's wedding she slipped on some ice, and fell flat on her back. After that fall her sense of smell came back. I'm not sure if that is somehow related to your story or not, but I thought I'd share it.

That's actually what happened to me but in reverse; my puppies tripped me up and I avoided stepping on them, but completely lost my balance and fell back on my butt, then fell back hitting the base of my skull on a step. Lucky I didn't break my neck, but it was a horrible concussion. No smell since (prior to covid craziness). My grandmother also lost her smell due to a tumor.

Hi Dixie!!!! WoW!!! I am So Happy for you Gals!!! I'm still suffering with this issue, but it is slowly imoroving.. I use to have a VERY sensitive odor detector until I got C19.. I was pretty good at making scent blends for fragrance my oils and soaps, dtc.. NOW I can't do it like before. Some scents smell gross or muted.. Flavors are so-so.. I miss the taste of honey for example.. The fragrance is also dulled.. I will just have to bide my time as its getting better... Lol, not necessarily happy to be able to smell the litter box or hubby's Strong sweat due to medications lol! But that is coming back too. I've had this since Mar '21 Thank You So Much for making this Very Important video and sharing!! You and your family are real Troopers!! I always enjoy your Amazing treks and suggestions!
