Hi from Perth, Western Australia. I had the same issue 6 years ago with the portable roofs being damaged with the sun. We get a lot of hot days and sun over here. I have 2 x 6ft x 12ft portable carports end to end. The so called heavy duty replacement covers were around $150 each. I have used pvc corrugated roofing on the sides to make it a garage. With the roof I used what we call solar guard UV paint. I bought 10 litre tins that were mis tinted cheaply from our Bunnings hardware chain here. I put around 6 coats on the roofs with a roller. The mis tinted paint were several different colours and the final colour was a light cream to suit the house. It has been on for 6 years now and still looks and functions well. The paint has a 10 year guarantee on it. The other benefit is it insulates the noise. No hearing the roof flapping in winds. Its basically coats of vinyl on the roof. For corners and stress points you just put a few more coats on these areas.

Looks good to me. Thank you for posting this. I would probably glue some tough padding under the stress points to spread out the stress across a larger surface area and stop it from deteriorating. You could put a cheap keyed deadbolt on the door so you can open it easily from the inside. If the wood front is resting on the ground a piece of PVC trim in front of it - sealed down with polyurethane or thermoplastic caulking might stop it from getting water damaged.

You didn't mention snow loads. I have two of those. One just like yours there and one with a Quanset-style roof. I build some 4x8 lattice panels out of 1x4's that are strapped to the roof area of the frame., top and bottom. To those I added polycarbonite sheets, which easily shed the snow. To the other one, I secured sections of cattle panel, and draped the top cover over that. Now, snow's not an issue for either.

I added a metal roof and the ten feet of snow we got squashed the building down and trapped my snowblowers under it for months until the snow melted. No more metal roofs.

Looks good to me and great price. You can always do things other ways. There are always more than one way to skin a cat. I think that this was affordable, quick, and reliable. Thanks for sharing. I am probably going to do the same. Much appreciated.

How's she goin'? Adding the trap is the way to go. 6 years ago I bought a heavy duty tarp from Princess Auto. I put the silver side out and that tarp is as good today as it was 6 years ago!! Nice repair. Take 'er easy!!

I put one of those on a roundtop one of those 4 years ago and it's still up. I ran strapping down the sides and sandwiched the tarp between one on the outside. Still holding, same tarp you used there.

Thanks for the update Sparky! I've got an old tractor that I need to put under one of these. How do the state thieves rate this? Do the "property tax assessors" tax you for this, or since it's just a "tarp shelter" do they leave you alone? I imagine they want to fine you until you build a "proper" shelter they can tax you on. For those of you who want to argue "how will we pay for x" - There are ways to raise money that doesn't involve taxing property; if government didn't blow so much money out it's ass, they wouldn't need to steal so much from us.

Make sure to use a light color tarp. I used a brown tarp because it was "heavy duty" the UV light got to it & the wind shredded it I laced mine down with rope & I think that the tension may be a factor in it ripping too. How well is the cover doing where the screws penetrate?
