One tip I found out to be extremely useful and is somewhat hidden at first sight, is that FL has a ‘current’ mixer track, and is an excellent place to add metering or monitoring plugins. If you click the meter next to the master track, you can actually add effects, and only whichever mixer track is currently selected will be routed through it. You will never need to add a metering plugin to any other track unless you need to see something in between your signal chain.

Thanks for the shortcut list, as always your videos are very helpful. Custom templates save you so much time! I have all my plugin's setup in custom folders (Image-line/FLStuddio/Presets/PluginDatabase/Effects) it can make it easier to find plugins based on the manufacturer rather than a folder full of "effects"

Another good thing to do I found is, tools, macros, switch smart disable on all plugins. So when plugins aren't in use they don't use cpu!! And f12 closes all plugin windows as it also helps cpu

these are the very essential steps that separates the amateur and professional film composer. However there are still many others among professionals, like template, shortcut and window management. NOt only knowing the shortcuts but dedicating a time to know which shortcuts are to be used most and which are secondary (assigning to a controler) takes experience to know. SO the bad habit is almost impossible to not have and is part of the process. The worst habit is to not stop and observe the bad habits and what can be made in a more intelligent way.

Automatic backup dont work until you dont save first save. reduce the backup files to 5. otherwise you can have 1 GB in backup that you don't need. 1gb x 30 projects 30gb of junk.

FLP files are pretty small... my backup folder currently has 100 autosaves in it and is only 87mb total (for all 100 flp files). You can reduce it to 5 backups if you want, but it's really not taking up much space. Definitely no where near 30gb

not in my bigger projects. and what will 100 backup files from one project do? And 100mb x 30 projects = 3gb

Renaming and coloring for templates in FL doesn't make sense.. This is do to how FL is designed. Changing a sample or synth within a template will mess things up and you will have to rename and color once more.. pointless.. If you create a template whereas the whole mixer is used by instrument and audio tracks you can't copy channel presets to them. It need some TLC..

It took me awhile to figure out the current workflow and template that I'm using now but it's definitely the best in terms of speed and organization that I've ever had. There's no synths or drums or anything on it yet. However, everything is labeled and colored in the playlist and mixer. I might have to relabel things occasionally, but you shouldn't ever have to change the color. There’s actually a different approach possible that I haven’t seen a lot of people explore. You can create custom name templates by editing a few text files once. What I mean is whenever you rename sth, you already have your most used names in the dropdown and the colors are also picked beforehand. So for example when I add a kick, I drop the sample onto the track header (mixer ,CR and track get linked automatically). Then I shift click the track header and I already have Kick in my list with my preset color. This renames and colors the CR, mixer and track in one go. After working for a bit and you wanna color and rename the used clips too, just right click the track header and hit C. This is super quick. In fact it’s so quick that’s it’s actually faster than I can do in Ableton, because it’s all muscle memory and no real thinking is involved in deciding colors or anything while producing, and no menus involved except to pick a name.

Hello! Workflow is an awesome topic and I'm glad you did a vid on it. Also, thank you for sharing your template. Perhaps in the future you can make a basic stock plug in version and explain why you chose your layout. Either way, I'm gonna dissect and figure out how to make it work thanks to your awesome videos. Here's a video on how and why I put together my template the way I did and a rough overview of my workflow explained. The template has mostly stock plugins.
