1. Spend a few hours looking up “review” articles 2. Look at the first major original studies, then the more recent ones 3. Look at the citations and steal (it’s actually perfectly okay) 4. Re-word (a.k.a paraphrase) the words used 5. Use the quotes in a subject based “quotes” sheet 6. Use the quotes in your outline to plan the essay 7. Use the Vancouver Citing System w/ Number’s 8. Use a citation program like Mendly or Quickref

@@lepandablop9039 we had classes called " scientific research" at least one class every week, from middle school till highschool, we have to present a small research and essays for every subject every year, but in highschool we have to do a big research that's 15-30% of our graduation grade, in some subjects it's 100% of the grade In the classes they'd give us papers on what should be in an essay/ research, how to write references, how to write opening statements/conclusion ect, what size to use, what font...

I do the same technique as you, the part where you said that you do two separate word documents where one is for the plan and the other for the actual assignment. I started doing this for my second year and my grades actually improved a lot. It really Is useful. Also, cite this for me is an excellent reference web page too.

If you find cite this for me useful, I definitely recommend Mendeley. You can transfer any pdf from google onto the software through an extension, it automatically formats citations for you based off the information it finds in the pdf as well as can find the website you first found the pdf. :) Not to mention, there is a section for notebooks where you can make notes on what you are reading, add annotations to the pdf and highlight them, all in one place.

When I was in first year I struggled to get a first. I wondered why was falling short all the time. Then one piece of work I had to write a critical review, I looked at around 50 pieces of primary research on the relationship between diabetes and sensorineural hearing loss and pulled each study apart looking at the sample size, methods, results and stats. Convinced I was going to get a 2.2 at best I reluctantly submitted it. About a month later the grades were in... I scored 85%. Ever since, I followed the structure I used for my review in every piece of work, and written exam... I ended up graduating with a first. I would always say to students, get into the habit of conducting reviews, they help your writing. The best marks synthesise original thoughts, they ask questions and try to give answers based on the evidence presented.

I had similair issues, understanding the topics, or brief was never an issues but researching a collecting sources then draft always overwhelmed me. the best approach is the take each section of the essay question and answer it in piecemeal, give authority and reference then move to next point, once you done that for several section compile a 2nd draft and make a main body. Then introduce the subject and conclude your finding from the body. Reference should be done. Hope that helps

If you're doing MLA intext citations, noting the (Author, Year) in your notes and outline can really help. When you get to writing it out, you've got the intext citation right there. Also, saving the paper by Author, Year can really help keep track of what info came from what source.

However, I do not like using reference links etc. for my work, it just becomes time consumig. If you search the article name in Google Scholar, you can citate it directly by clinking " icon, copy paste it into your references and put the same number both to text and the references :)

I'm a US first-year writing teacher and you have some really good tips in here. I agree with another comment that talked about using your school's library databases as well, especially as you are just getting started. I also like using Google docs so I can have research anywhere. I'd also recommend copying over your quotes and putting them in quotes so that you can compare them when you are drafting the paper to make sure you are paraphrasing and quoting properly. I see a lot of issues with students thinking they paraphrased but in fact they really used the majority of the original source.

A great handy trick that I recently discovered when researching is favoriting your research sources to a folder on chrome. Adding them to a folder you can open them on any device when you are logged into your google account and you can open all tabs by right-clicking the folder, super easy. I often find myself having 50+ tabs open when I am starting research and it slows down my pc so this really helps when I have multiple essays on the go at once.

I import my references into EndNote as I’m doing the research. It has a place to save the PDF too but I often use a similar system to you- save the files to an essay specific folder. I group my citations/references within EndNote. So all my citations are in one place for research purposes for specific assignment. I also use the “Cite While You Write”

I'm a mature student and I did not actually manage to get my GCSEs until my mid 20s. I then completed an access course in Nursing and finished with distinctions. However, I've found essay writing at uni to be extremely difficult. I'm retaking 2nd year Psychology (not to do with failing; I couldn't attend for most of the year) and I'm trying to get my 'head back in the game' as it were. I know I'm capable of a good grade, the majority of my marks were a 1st towards the end of first year but mostly in lab reports. Thank you for your very helpful video. I used a very similar method when completing my law degree, get an over view of the topic, understand the brief, break down answering each section of the essay, using evidence and reference answering each section citing one source. Making full use of electronic journals, and legislation and case law. Reference as you going along. The first draft will always be anything and everything you know about the topic, second draft then starts tidying it up before competing one final draft which you read, proof read, then have a checklist to ensure you assessed each point referenced it. Check your within your word out. Submit. Hope that helps .

@19:25: WRONG! It wasn't confusing at all! I used that method during my study years, albeit that they occurred during the 20th century, pre-internet dark age; an interesting period which necessitated physically traveling to libraries where one would take notes on paper with a pen then Scurry home and collate those Bits of Paper with other Bits of Paper which one had collected from various other locations. It certainly seems to be a lot easier these days :-) Especially as this essay writing structure applies across subjects, fields and disciplines , I'm sure it will help thousands and thousands of students! Excellent video, Kenji. The key to successful essay writing is organisation, and you provide first class (pun intended) advice on how to do just that. I have just one question, how fast is your internet speed? I was almost drooling as I watched the speed at which your web pages appeared on your laptop screen. I'm guessing your internet is provided through fibre optics, am I right? When I was writing essays (at home) for my undergrad degree (in law) my internet speed was 10 mbs; I still bear the psychological scars.

This was intriguing to watch despite myself having graduated a year ago from biomed! 😅 Some really good tips, but just wanted to add that for citations/references, using RefWorks in the manner you described can sometimes be really long-winded and time-consuming. Instead, I'd HIGHLY recommend downloading the *Google Scholar Button* extension to your browser. it works by clicking the button and either searching for a paper to cite directly in the extension OR copy+pasting a paper from anywhere, then, clicking the quotation marks which reveals a complete reference in 5 different referencing styles (inc. Harvard & Vancouver). You also have the option to directly export it to RefWorks and other referencing platforms! Alsoooo, the *Weava Highlighter* chrome extension is a lifesaver paired with the button. It allows you to highlight online articles and PDFs which you can then organise into folders/add notes/export+cite sources. I used these extensions during my final year for my dissertation and citing/referencing was an absolute breeze!

Sci-hub. it's a thing.... a VERY good thing. Gives access to the most recent papers (some of them that are just pending for review and publishing AND require a paid subscription). Just make sure if you use it in ref works to rewrite the title. You don't want scihub coming up in your references xD. (most institutes have access to paid subscriptions so this is just a great way to avoid the hassle of going through the process of entering your uni details for each paywall article). Its legality is debatable so use at your own discretion. That being said, I submitted my own dissertation using it and it was actually recommended to me by a PhD student. My dissertation went overkill with like 200+ papers because my lecturer had me research about 20 different biomarkers and create a mini table review of the most recent ones that were being trialled, giving a brief intro/conclusion for each. The feedback for that section was "outstanding" (still a grading system that pisses me off) and probably one of the main reasons my grade got pushed from an A to an A+. Doing the referencing your way seems more efficient than my own method. I never numbered my articles, nor did I do a draft or essay plan in a separate document. Instead, I wrote out the parts that I wanted directly, paraphrasing from the paper which I then would refwork and that was that. I would keep it until I decided it might not be as relevant. Admittedly, this was kind of a terrible way to plan an essay especially with a dissertation, it's so chunky that you don't really know where to start or what would be relevant and definitely could have saved a lot of time in hindsight. So just copy and pasting it instead to keep handy for later sounds like a lifesaver. I definitely think I was recommended to do it like this by a friend too. Unfortunately for me, once I started doing it my way it just became a habit. p.s. Also, guys.... REFWORKS IS THE G.O.A.T. It will save you so much time. Just invest the energy into learning and incorporating it into your essays NOW. Imagine having 100 papers let alone 10 OR 20 and trying to reference them by hand. I had a friend (who honestly skipped 80% of lectures) that didn't know about it and still got a B+ on his dissertation of maybe 80 articles that he referenced by hand. I.E. HE COPY AND PASTED THE TITLE, DATE, AUTHORS, LOCATION E-VE-RY-THING. BY HIMSELF IN THE CORRECT FORMAT! He dropped to the floor when I told him about refworks. R.I.P Ahmed. Really cool vid btw, will defo apply parts to my own method. TY.
