Great advice about reading some of the PI’s papers in advance and tailoring your email to show your knowledge of and interest in that professor’s research. I would also recommend asking for advice (e.g., what can I do to get research experience to maximize my chances of getting into a top tier university? Or better: what did you do when you were my age?). Many professors (or anyone really) might be reluctant to speak with a random high school (or even college) student begging for a job. However, most professors are willing to spend 10-15 minutes answering questions from a student who seems genuinely interested in his or her research. Moreover, even if they do not have any positions available, it is likely that they may know a colleague or other lab that is looking for high school students and can point you in the right direction. Even better, armed with an introduction from a known researcher in the field, your application will stand out when you apply for that position.

Hi! My goals: 1. To reach the first or at least second place at the astronomy olympiad. I got the second place at the finals last year when I was in the eighth grade by the US system (I live in Russia so technically I was in the seventh grade,we study here for eleven years since age of 7). We have 4 steps at the All-Russian Olympiad (you can participate at it in 24 school subjects actually): 1)school step, then 2) municipal one, 3) so-called 'regional' step (Russia is divided into 85 subjects, which we call regions) and the last step is an All-Russian one. How I said, I reached it last year and this was pretty much fun! I am having a regional step in two days, so I hope I'll have even better results. 2. To learn how to code (and then program) properly. I started coding a year ago and am currently studying a course here in my town, and now I am trying to learn and use more algorithms ;) I I really like everything related to computers, and hopefully I'll learn how to use my knowledge in different fields altogether and make something important. 3. To try to do some research work. I already tried some of it last summer when a team of an online school let us, starting programmers, be a part of making the AI chat-bot that would be able to talk to you, so you develop your English language speaking level. It works perfectly well, so I guess it was a really cool experience. By making research and project work I hope I'll be considered by international universities, because, sadly, there's no way for me to stay in Russia if I want to work in scientific field. It's just not possible now (and let's say, that life here is not the best during this period, although many people here are trying to change that) Sooo, we will see what is waiting for me :) I have sooo many olympiads this year, and I hope I'll succeed) thank you for giving great advices! That is really helpful PS: sorry for the mistakes (if there are some), English is not my first language, and I do not speak it very well

Great goals! I think physical prototypes is a really good idea in engineering! I have seen a ton of great high schooler projects where they make budget versions of expensive machines/use frugal parts and make some crazy device for under $100. It's a great way to showcase skills and idea, without having laser cut parts etc.
