Hey Ray Zhang, I’m a sophomore who has a D in chemistry for the semester. I’m not very good at chemistry but plan to try for a computer science major. I currently have a 3.83 GPA from 3 B’s, 1 D, and the rest A’s. I’ve taken 2 AP classes so far (Human Geo & Computer Science Principles) and am currently taking AP Psych. All my other classes are Advanced Honors. I haven’t done any extracurriculars this year due to corona but have done a lot freshman year. Do you think I’ll be able to make it into a close to ivy league level school like Vanderbilt? I’d love to hear your thoughts & some possible suggestions to improve my chances!
@rayzhang64533 жыл бұрын
Hey Collin, I think your scores are fine. The only concern is the D but if you can make sure the rest of your grades are As and a few Bs you should be fine. Because of covid, colleges should understand that you won’t have much involvement but make sure you participate whenever you can. Also, if you have some kind of passion work towards that and use it to make an impact. Not only is this good for self growth, but it also looks good for college. Remember although we do many of these things for colleges, college rather you do it because you want to be an impact and are passionate about something. I would like to say that compsci is more selective. Either way good luck! You chances look good imo

Hey! First I want to thank you for this amazing video, it was really helpful to me. I wanted to ask your opinion on a few things: 1- Im a student from Brazil and, besides the fact that GPA isnt a thing here, it is wayyy more difficult to get good grades when you study in a good school. Even the best students struggle to get 8s on tests. So when we have to calculate our average in order to try calculating our GPA, a 3.0 is actually a mark very complicated to reach. 2- I only decided that I wanted to go to college in the US this year, my senior year, (studying abroad is kinda unusual in Brazil) therefore Im only having a few months out of all four highschool years to get involved in extracurriculars. I've done some extra activities already but they are nothing compared to the amount US students have. Im a dreamer and Im also really dedicated, so I really really really want to study in a top university in the US (not necessarily an ivy league). I am studying a lot for the ACT, which im taking once in october and once in december. Basically I would like to know your opinion on my situation, what you actually think about all this. Im doing my best, but i just feel like I wont be even considered in college admissions due to my lack pf extracurriculars and low GPA . I feel kind of lost idk, so if you could say what you honestly think it would mean a lot :) Thank you and sorry for commenting the whole bible in your comment section.
@rayzhang64533 жыл бұрын
Tbh I have no experience with international students so I’m def not the best person to consult in this scenario. However, I’m sure if you try your best and end up being top of your class you have a great shot at a top school. College admission officers will compare you with those around you, not people from diff countries and schools so if you aren’t given many opportunities they will totally understand. Make sure you get the highest ACT you can and spend a lot of time dedicated to your essay and prove to the admission officer why you are a good fit/should be part of their school. Also if your goal is just to go to school in the Us, there are so many college to choose from so def shoot for the top ones, but apply to some lesser known/ranked schools since every college will give you a great education! Good luck and have a nice day :)

Hey Ray, is a 3.76 unweighted and 4.2 weighted GPA too low for Ivy Leagues despite 9 APs and 5 DEs throughout high school? On the common data sets UPenn said their average GPA was a 3.9, Johns Hopkins was a 3.94, Princeton was a 3.95, Stanford was a 3.96, etc. whereas Harvard reported a 4.2 GPA and UChicago was a 4.33. How reliable are these numbers? Thanks!

What do you think would be a good gpa for Georgetown? Also are honors and ap classes the only way you get into solid schools?
@rayzhang64533 жыл бұрын
Hey Justin, if your school has honors and AP then I would say yea. Taking Ap and honors would be able to boost your gpa and show colleges the rigor in your courseload. However if you school doesn’t offer it then don’t worry as you will be compared with your peers and not really others from other schools for decision. Although I never applied to Georgetown I would assume an all A student is preferred, but it comes down to your sat and EC as well. My school used a website called naviance to show the grades and sat of past admitted and denied students so it’s going to differ school by school. See if your school has that kind of information. Good luck!

Hey Ray, I am an international student (India) and I was in the top 2 of my class throughout 9 and 10 (I took advanced mathematics through out 9 and 10 and scored 97 out of 100 in maths , 98 out of 100 in advanced maths and 92/ 100 in science). But due to problems I faced in my family and struggling mentally I didn't do well in 11th grade (also I changed school and had to move like 3 times in less than a year). Finally in 12th grade I got help and was ready to do better but my exams got cancelled and we will be accessed based on our last year performance. Also due to covid all the sat exams are cancelled here. I was fairly active through 9 and 10, where I was leader, participated in competitions, did art and painting as a hobby, house commander for girls parade, I participated in regional exhibition and got selected for the nationals but couldn't go because of riots that happened where I lived, I also participated in school drama as a script editor, promptor, as an assistant and played a minor role. I am also an avid reader and have participated in essay and poetry competitions in all these years. Do you think that I have a chance to get in a top school? And please give me some advice. It will be of great help if you could answer but I am very doubtful and unsure.
@rayzhang64533 жыл бұрын
Hi Javhni, I think you shouldn’t be worried since colleges take a holistic approach and check your overall cumulative grade not just one year. Your leadership looks good and honestly not much you can change, so I recommend making your essay very good and writing about why you academically did poorly one year in it. Overall don’t be worried, your overall grades still show you are an excellent student so colleges aren’t going to penalize you too much for having lower marks especially during covid. Good luck and hopefully that helps answers some of your questions and doubts!

I have similar story. I scored 90 GPA on 100 scale in 9th and 10th when I didn't even knew about MIT. I am in 11th and suffering from depression as I started to take career stress a few months ago which made me get F in Physics, Maths, Science in first term but I gave re-exam in which I performed like a B so my scores may get replaced but I have 2 months left for final exam and I aim for 85-90 GPA on 100 scale for that as I feel I can do better now. So, assuming I get minimum 80 GPA in 11th and 90 GPA in 12th. Will Universities understand my problem? Also, I just found about MIT in mid of 11th grade so I didn't even knew what extra-curriculars were even though I have been doing Gaming since many years which maybe can be counted as an EC. So can I do something in it that can help me for self growth and look good as an extra-curricular. I also started song writing now and I will try to make a song. I love doing that as well. And I am looking forward to start coding and create a website. 4th extra-curricular idk if I will have one but in case I feel like I will start reading. So, can these 4 extra curriculars be enough and what exceptionally good can I do in them? Plus, I aim for 1500+ SAT and I have neither participated in any Olympiads nor did any volunteer activities as I like to do things alone more. Even though I look forward to find a good group to do things with. I assume that I will have a good essay in application. Can I get admitted into top schools, particularly, I like MIT. Ray Zhang plz reply if you reading this. Thank you very much bro!

Thanks for the video. I just had a really bad semester which ruined my 4.0. I ran simulations and found out that if I get my average semester grades for the remainder of highschool (all A’s and an occasional B), I’ll be finishing with a high 3.7. I was wondering if you think that’s a good enough gpa to get into my dream school, John Hopkins. I have a good amount of extracurricular activities and my practice SAT score was a 1530 so those should factor in nicely, right?
@rayzhang64533 жыл бұрын
I think a 3.7 is def good enough to get into JHU and similar schools. Your sat score is def really good and your EC should factor nicely. I’d make sure to explain in your essays about why you love JHU start researching reasons you are a good fit and why you want to attend besides being a very good institution etc. Usually, the essay is what separates very good applicants with accepted ones! Good luck and hopefully you find success :)

Hey, Ryan. I really like your video and thought it was super insightful. I found this video because I’m feeling anxious but would like your honest opinion. I’m currently a senior with a 3.8 GPA non-weighted and I really want to get into UCI or UCLA, but I’m afraid my GPA is too low. I’m struggling with AP Calc currently (I have a C right now, but I’m trying to raise it to a B). I took 10 APs (including senior year) and about 5 Honors classes. I have done about 18ish extracurriculars to try to help with my GPA. I did not take the SAT or ACT due to COVID and UCs aren’t accepting them. Do you think I will get accepted? I would like your honest opinion. Thank you!

Update: I got waitlisted at UCI, UCSD, and UCLA. I got into UC Berkeley and applied as a biochemistry major. I got off the waitlist for UCSD about a week ago and decided to go there instead of Cal. UCSD and Cal were my last options but... oh well. As for grades, I managed to get a B in AP Calculus for both semesters. I had all A for the rest of my classes. In my opinion, this year (2022) is one of the most competitive years with the largest amount of applicants. I think, in order to get into top schools like UCLA, you would need a near-perfect GPA. I think one of the factors for my waitlist at UCLA was my lower GPA. Also, major is a huge deciding factor as well. Stems majors are capped or impacted. Good luck to everyone else, though! Praying to get off the waitlist for UCLA but I think that's pretty impossible LOL!

Hi Ray! I was curious if your GPA is weighted or unweighted. I’m currently a sophomore with a slightly higher than 4 GPA since my school uses a weighted system. I am quite worried since I have don’t very impressive extracurrilars either. I have interest in art, but haven’t really pursued it up to this point. I don’t plan to aim for ivy but just a decent uni. What do you think I should do?
@rayzhang64533 жыл бұрын
Hey, my school has weighted gpa on a 4 scale as well. Since you are a sophomore you have tons of time to develop your interests and find extracurricular that you are interested and passionate about. If you love art, I’d create a portfolio of your work since most art schools prefer that. Even if you just like art as a hobby, I’d still capitalize on that by joining clubs related to art or founding something that your school doesn’t have. The most important thing is being able to show colleges you care because you are interested and not that you care just to get into college. Also for “decent” universities def know it is much easier to get into as they require lower grades and less EC. Try your best in school, get the best sat you can, and join clubs you love and when applying try ivies, decent schools, safe schools, etc and see how you fair. Again good luck and happy yo answer any other q you have!

I would say set yourself a schedule and make sure you find the reasons for lack of motivation. If it’s because you are watching too much KZbin or on your phone too much, try to put your phone downstairs or shut it down for the few hours you study. Procrastination is something I still deal with (and most people as well) but it’s important to realize that if you focus on school work and lower the amount of time you are on social media it’s going to help your future immensely. You can also try to study in short spurts and just make sure you are in top of things such as getting hw done legit and putting effort into school work over everything else. With the pandemic things are def more laid back but make sure you enforce these rules for yourself because it will really prepare you for college workload and the workforce. Best of luck! Thanks for watching :)

Ok so I have around a 3.3 gpa and I plan on taking the sats in a month. When I start applying I will have 6 AP classes and a couple of dual enrollment classes. My average freshman year was a 82 then my Sophomore year it was a 85 and now I’m my junior year it is a 90 average. I want to go to UF and like I had like a life altering thing going on during my freshman and Sophomore year that ended up resolving in the summer of my sophomore to Junior year.
@rayzhang64533 жыл бұрын
I think your chances at UF are great. I don’t believe UF is as competitive as some of the other schools people are aiming at so you def have some leeway when it comes to SAT/ Gpa. Your increasing trend is also promising. Keep up the great work and you will reach your goals! Good luck :)

How many ap classes did you take? Did you take any sat subject tests?
@rayzhang64533 жыл бұрын
I took 6 aps overall and took sat math subject and sat chem subject. Overall I did fairly well on the subject tests above 700 on both (I don’t quite remember the scores lol). However, from my experience AP classes aren’t as important as gpa, meaning if you get all Bs in an AP class, it’s better if you take all honors and get straight As. Colleges care more about cumulative gpa so don’t try to get as many AP classes and overwork yourself. Take classes you are comfortable with!

Hey! thanks for the video, currently I'm in freshman year with a 3.9 gpa and I've made a huge improvement academically, my first semester of freshman year was around 2.7 gpa, and my final gpa for freshman year is expected to be 3.6 or 3.7. I'm hoping to get 3.9 or 4.0 gpa for the rest of high school, Later on do you that this one bad gpa will effect me from getting into a higher school?
@rayzhang64533 жыл бұрын
Hey! Your low gpa shouldn’t really affect your chances. If you can show that you are consistently doing well and mention your newly found work ethic or motivation in your essays. It can actually strengthen your chances since it shows a student that has changed for the better. Also gpa isn’t the only thing colleges look at. Make sure you have a nice SAT and EC. Best if luck!!

@rayzhang64532 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comment. I am sorry you are going through tough times and wish you the best. I recommend reflecting on how you could improve your senior year grades and try your best to get a higher gpa and sat score. I would try my best if I were you and accept if you get in or not. College is very much a gamble so there’s no true recipe for success. Remember that there are also transfer options if you do not get in if you preform well your first year of college (although I don’t have much info on transferring) and also that any college will offer you the skills necessary to be successful. College is just a milestone and not an end goal. No matter what college you go to, your goal is to get a job and provide for yourself and your family so I wouldn’t stress it so much and just try your best! Hopefully this was helpful and good luck :)

Hi Ray, your video helped. Quick question. I'm a junior who is looking getting into Stanford and other UC's but since after taking two other AP classes I ended up with a C and B which dropped my gpa from a 4.0 to 3.38 but I will be taking 5 other AP classes so hopefully that will help. So since this year many schools have decided to not look at SAT or ACT so would you recommend me taking it also I have been involved in all the clubs at school also I am the officer for few of them. So getting into Stanford, do you think if I have a good chance with Stanford? Looking forward to seeing your response.
@_a_5494 Жыл бұрын
hey man, im a bit curious as to how your gpa went from a 4.0 to a 3.38 after just a C and a B (this should still keep you in the 3.8-3.9 range). If you do have a 3.38 you likely won't be able to get into Stanford.

do ap tests matter? like do colleges care about your actual scores or just the fact you took the class...because theres no way im getting a 5 on the apush test.
@rayzhang64533 жыл бұрын
Ap test from my experience don’t really matter. It’s mostly so you get credits and skip intro college classes. The reason I think this too is since on the application you self report, whereas for sat and gpa you have to give them the official transcript/have college board send scores. That means they care less about your AP scores compared to other things. You also don’t need to report them if you don’t want to so I wouldn’t worry too much. If you can get 3-4 you should be fine. Any lower may look bad and def won’t allow you to get credits. At Cornell they only accept 4-5 so thats something to keep in mind when applying as well. Good luck!

Hey Richard. I would take it once again before submitting it. 1410 is by no means a bad score but if you can get it to around 1450+ you increase your chances tremendously. However if you are unable to take it or improve, I recommend applying with the 1410 and sending either a high sat subject math or reading or an updated SAT to make up for it and many times this growth can result in an acceptance than a rejection! Low gpa, no sat/act scores... Then what?
@rayzhang64533 жыл бұрын
Then it comes down to EC and essays. I firmly believe the essay for each college when you apply is probably the most important since it shows your personality and the type of person you are. Make sure you spend a lot of time on that and start early. I know people who started brainstorming it a year in advance. Btw if you didn’t know there are two types of essays: Common app and supplement. The main essay about who you are is the common app, supplement are essays that each college asks you regarding why you want to join their school. I’d make sure those are written well which is easier said than done. Also idk what grade you are in, but make sure to have a focus when joining clubs and join those that you are genuinely interested in instead of those that others join. That’s my advice for low gpa and no sat/act! Good luck! Hopefully this was helpful 👍

Honestly you stats look really good. Besides the AP and IB which colleges will understand since it’s not your fault you didn’t take them. The college credits will especially stand out! Hi Pranay, your chances shouldn’t be lowered from bad marks in 9th grade. Colleges like seeing growth so if you show you can improve your grades, it will actually help your chances. Good luck!

hello, I’ve been struggling during school because of corona I’m a freshman going into my sophomore year I have 3 As 2 Bs and 1 D i have a current 2.7 gpaI did terribly this year because I was stuck at home I did no clubs and have not done AP and honor classes yet please tell me or give me advice on what I need to do I am 100% determined on making sure when I get back to school that all my grades will go back up again please give me advice as to what I should do thank you!!
@rayzhang64533 жыл бұрын
I think you'll be fine as long as you can improve your grades in the next few years. Clubs will definitely be harder to get with Corona and colleges will understand. You can do some outside of school stuff or create something you are passionate about. Additionally, make sure you join clubs you enjoy and have a passion for next year and be an active member to make up for freshman year. Overall, you have plenty of time to improve so keep working on it and you should be in great shape!

Hi, I have a 3.77 gpa atm and I am in my 3rd quarter of junior year. Will it still be possible to raise that to a 3.85 or 3.9 and will that be enough. Also, I scored in the 96th percentile on the psat what do u think?
@rayzhang64533 жыл бұрын
I would talk to your counselor about whether it is still possible to get that score because frankly it differs by school system. However if you can get it from 3.7-3.9 range you def are qualified to apply. Your psat is a good sign you will do well on sat but make sure you are involved in clubs and sports! Good luck!

How about low AP scores, cuz college board is a scam🥲
@rayzhang64533 жыл бұрын
From my experience ap scores don’t matter for college acceptance it’s more for you to skip classes or get credits. My senior year I didn’t take a couple of the ap exams since Cornell didn’t even give credits for them so obviously you want to have a rigorous course load but whatever score you get doesn’t really matter. Id def still take them but just don’t be too stressed about the scores! Also for reference when you apply to colleges you self report your scores so they def don’t care as much as say gpa or say which you send through your counselor and college board (respectively). Hope that helps! Good luck :)

I have a a 2.5 gpa but I didn’t take the sat or act

Although your chances are lower, I’d still try to apply. Try and improve your essay and explain why your grades were low. Good luck!

Can you apply with your weighted GPA?
@rayzhang64533 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by that? When you apply to college, if your school has weighted gpa, college will transform your school gpa and scale it on their scale so that all applicants have an even playing field. So if your Highschool does weighted gpa, the college will see the weighted and then change it into something on their scale so those who go to a school that has weighted gpa vs a school that does unweighted have equal chances. Hopefully that answers your question? Good luck! Thanks for watching :)
@oluwatobio32113 жыл бұрын
@@rayzhang6453 oh okay, so at my school we have weighted and unweighted GPA. My unweighted GPA is a 3.835 and my weighted GPA is a 3.111 on a 4.0 scale so that means the college would transform it and it could be a completely different value?
@rayzhang64533 жыл бұрын
Yep. It would be transformed so that someone from a school that doesn’t have weighted will have comparable numbers as yours!
