I had the tier 2 sponsor list bookmarked on my computer for 9 years - couldn't find something in the few months after UK grad school so I applied to corporate companies in the US that could sponsor in the UK, and worked in the US for 2 years before convincing them I was worth sending to their London office. Luck is definitely a big part of it! Thank you for being a channel of guidance over the years as I attempted to make this happen, I'm so happy to join the expat group! :)

@@MERCHIODOS Whenever I watch Australian TV programmes and someone is moving interstate in Australia, they give the impression that it's a big deal. I thought it would be just like moving from one part of the UK to another but it seems rather more complex.

I’m glad you mentioned about luck playing a huge part in your success. Many people work extremely hard and feel dejected when things don’t work out believing that it must be because they don’t work as hard as their peers. You definitely need to work hard but luck is also a major element in finding the right job. A lot of people don’t acknowledge this when talking about their success.

if you can find a way to land a job in the UK before you move there that will probably be your best shot at survival. since Evan came to the UK to study, he basically started at rock bottom, being a UK student FROM the UK is difficult enough to be your own person, afford your own home and food like its stupidly hard nowadays, so for someone like Evan it must have been a really scary time. You could complete your studies in the US, or there are a few online universities in the UK such as the Open University, its one of the biggest Universities in the UK (over 100,000 enrolled students worldwide) and it offers a good range of high paid jobs, especially in all sciences from physics to political science. business studies, environmental, maths and statistics, IT, economics, just to name a few, and their fees are not extortionate. if you can get the right jump start in your home country where its much easier to live, then move once you are prepared, hopefully that gives you a helping hand in the process of migrating

yes sadly we have those situations here in the states, but it also depends on where you live. i would recommend if you decided to come here go to california, new york, seattle, or maybe las vegas as for the most part they are not as bad. in general as a native asian american i know that these would be best.

I’m originally from Trinidad 🇹🇹.I came to the UK on a student visa in 2005 where I got a diploma in Actuarial Science at the U of Kent in Canterbury.Unfortunately I couldn’t find an Actuarial job in the UK quickly enough so I applied for a student visa in the USA where I did my Masters in Applied Mathematics.Long story short,I became a US citizen in May 2023 .Im not an Actuary but I did some actuarial work for a while ,however life happens .I now work at home for the moment and it’s great listening to your story. But as you say (and did): I put myself in a position to take advantage of that good luck when it came along. You can’t sit around and wait for the lucky break to come your way.

Being European, I've lived and worked in Norway, Iceland, Spain, Gibraltar and Ireland and I've never had any problems at all...and I don't even have a degree! I don't waste time on regrets, but I do truly regret not living in the UK for two years in my 20s. I was deterred by the high unemployment there at the time, but I since found out that Australians have minimal trouble getting jobs there. C'est la vie! Thank you for the video! Have an amazing week!

I would move to the UK in a cold second if I could physically and monetarily have the ability to do so. Because of my disability, I'll likely only be able to immigrate if I somehow find a wealthy British person who takes pity on me to support me until I can get UK citizenship, through marriage, or I win a huge amount of money someday. It sucks that basically all the Americans who would greatly benefit from immigrating OUT of the US are the only ones never likely to be able to do so. My life would be immensely better if I were not in the US.

That's because your disability would become the expense of the UK. Canada has a clause that says if you've a disability you will be refused a Visa.

I toughy that an ex-pet is a person that is planning on eventually returning to their original country and/or keeping that option open. In contrast an immigrant is moving to a different country planning to stay there.

Actually, its not just westerners who use the word ex-pat. Many languages and countries have their version of the word ex-pat and they use it in the same way that westerners do. I don't understand this notion that ex-pat is a horrific word.

@@louisemb6291 "Ex-pat" isn't a bad word. I think the user was just pointing out the tendency for western media to refer to white immigrants as "ex-pats" but non-white immigrants as "immigrants" when writing about immigration from a negative or otherwise critical viewpoint.

I am watching this as a non graduate, British born albeit full ethnic minority, approaching 30, depressed, disabled, disadvantaged, chronically ill, in debt, unsupported, long term unemployed, suffering woman, in hell, has been to countless, nightmarish, failed interviews. To be fair I think most managers at places like urban outfitters know the deal when taking on staff. Most aren't going to be there long term and most are just doing it till something better comes along or as a bit of pocket money so they can go out at weekends. So glad you had a manager telling you not to come back if you gave a masters degree as you can do so much better.

Hi Sam, British citizen here. I know I’m not Evan but I have some tips. Depending on where you are in your life, the process for getting here can be different. If you haven’t done a degree yet, the best thing to do is consider doing that in the UK; a student visa now provides 2 years post graduation to work in whatever job you want in the UK without a sponsor. If you aren’t at that stage but went to one of the worlds top 50 unis, there’s a separate visa that you can look into for this. Other than that you’d need to get a Skilled worker visa with a sponsored employer. As Evan said, look up the list of skills and see if you fit, and then look up the list of sponsors and start reaching out and making connections. After that the process is relatively hassle free, depending on your visa you will likely have to visit an embassy/consulate near you for some checks but this all depends on the circumstances for the exact visa you have. In terms of accommodation in the UK, I don’t recommend renting a place you have never seen so you should plan to arrive early and live in a hostel or Airbnb whilst you look for your own place or rent with others. This prevents you getting scammed out of money as there are lots of rental scams these days.

In my opinion, the best UK visa to be on is the Global talent visa. The visa is tied to you so you don't require sponsorship and the process is fairly easy. You may want to check it out to see if it's applicable to the industry you work in.

Currently I am going into the start of my 2 year degree which I will be completing in America (but I will be done with it after just one year), and then hopefully after that either going to the UK to achieve my bachelors and master’s degrees, or possibly finishing my bachelors in America and then my masters in the UK. One question I have (which I’m honestly assuming you don’t know) is if my AICE Diploma would help me get into UK universities in any way, since it really holds no weight here in America yet I still got the diploma after completing around 12 classes. Would you know if that is important for me in regards to further education in the UK, since I’m nearly sure that you would have taken sort of the same exams that I ended up taking to get the diploma. Just found your channel, you’re super charismatic and engaging so you’ve gained a sub! I’ve just completed a sponsored apprenticeship degree (it’s a BA degree in business, same content and assessments as the standard thing but you don’t pay for it as your employer sponsors you, so 37.5 hour week working your normal job alongside studying for a degree).. I FEEL YOUR PAIN!! You finish work knackered and then remember ah crap I’ve got a paper due next week so you’re constantly exhausted. Huge respect for you particularly due to your degree subject and the dialect differences :)

Good story! Yeah, I wouldn't have banked on E Harmony's promise either. If they wanted to they could have sorted out the sponsorship earlier and saved you anxiety about that. I would have looked at a company ready to sponsor straight away as well. When you whole world depends on something, you can't just count on a promise like that.

I hate the office etiquette of having to make every one a cup of tea when I want one. I would also just drink instant coffee so it was much quicker to make than tea. People would see it as a way to get a few minutes break, but I just found it frustrating and ruined my workflow. But, now I work from home so I don't have to worry about that at all. Just lovely.

Thank you for giving a bit of a reality check on being an expat/immigrant! I love being an expat, but contrary to what many KZbinrs/Influencers imply, it's not all unicorns farting rainbows. It's unsettling to know that you can be removed from a country at any time for any reason, and the looming deadline for renewing your residence and/or work permit can be terrifying. I worked as an actuarial analyst at one of the big companies but I relate to you when you said it wasn't it for you! I understand actuarial needs full focus but I could not give up parts of my life to be a human calculator!!

The first company i worked for didnt have Sponsorship status - and they had to apply to be a sponsor just to keep me on. This was a small digital production agency and they had no experience doing this! But got there in the end 😅 No one really understands the stress an immigrant goes through to secure that Tier 2 visa and then eventually the ILR (and ultimately citizenship!)

Its funny I have just started college doing an Access to higher education course for science & I haven't done any science in years & I feel like everythings going over my head. I enjoyed the video for the most part, but seeing people document their struggles to move out of the US can be quite depressing for me. Sometimes I wish it was still like the Ellis Island days where there were no Visas you could just show up and more than likely get in. In those times the USA was a bastion of hope for many, but I just feel trapped here.

As a US citizen, I worked for a Swedish telecom firm (in the US). Finally got my dream and got a contract in Blighty. I was hoping to actually emigrate, but my manager was a knob end and HR screwed me so, after just a year, it was back to Dallas (for all my sins). That was over 20 years ago and I've tried moving back, but no joy. :( The only way I could move to England for my golden years is to win the lottery. Or marry someone.

Question: Because my family are English, I qualify for an English Passport despite being onlyy and American. I got into the MSc at Edinburgh, and my husband and I want to move to the UK long term (at some point). If I get that english passport now, would it be easier to become a dual national later? Also hot tips for UK MSc program ? (I’m psych so any general tips is fine)

By virtue of holding a US and UK passport you would be a dual national. Also an MSc programme can widely vary based on where you are studying

I enjoy the sit and chats! I'm an immigrant in a different country. We are applying for our permanent residency this week. Its been a bit of a long road, but late last year they changed the paperwork and requirements and made it much easier to qualify. This has lifted a large load off our shoulders. Not we are not dependent on a job to keep us here. Woohoo!

Hearing your story makes me so glad that as a German I managed to move and get a job here in the UK just before Brexit became official. Meaning I just about qualified for pre-settled status and could avoid needing a visa and all the stress and anxiety that come with it.

It's funny that you didn't want to continue pursuing the actuarial career. I've found that the most desirable skills for actuaries are the people skills. Especially in areas like consulting, broking and reinsurance

I'm just catching-up on your history and one thing I really find strange is how bad companies are at managing 'social media' and getting a reach out to their audience. You Tube would definitely bamboozle companies as a media way to get sales and engage in customers as they have no presence at all.. Excellent job.
