Check my playlists i have like 2 years worth of cool videos where i explore diff cities in Cambodia. Nothing to do with teaching. The Battambang one is cool, i go to a crocodile farm and some famous caves.

Locals might not like it if you go into dead ends. Had everyone staring daggers after accidentally going into one in Vietnam. Woman screamed at me with her eyes while making a gesture and an old man in a wheelchair told me "Di di!" Cambodians will just be quiet or quietly let a dog out on you.

Yea I live in Phnom Penh. If you want help being lined up with job placements, AVSE TESOL - has a program for people who are already certified teachers, just to help line up a job. Teaching jobs abroad program. You can find it here www.avse.edu.vn - if you go for it mention Tom Trips Out

I did a TEFL in Bangkok 10 years ago , I then got a job in Phnom Penh, at a international school , Unfortunately I got dumped teaching grade 5 Science and math Not English, so I was not trained for that, Also I found the dress code and climate, together hard to take , So I didn’t last long I’m now retired in Thailand Peter

Yea that sounds not so good. At my school we had air conditioning in all rooms and we can wear short sleeves. Ive never had to teach other subjects but that can happen. - but they give you a text book anyway so you’re just facilitating the activities and marking their work with an answer key so I don’t see it as much different. My school would provide us with power point presentations we could use for our lessons as well.

Tom, I am kind of confused by this AVSE thing. If one wants to sign up for AVSE, does one go directly to the school to sign up or does one go through International TEFL Academy to sign up?

They should only go through avse and use his code. It's the only way to get a job and succeed out here. Trust me
@TomTripsOut

You should go Directly to the AVSE website. If you go through ITA then THEY will get paid a referral for directing you there and its possible it could cost more. Better to cut out the middle man. It also helps support my channel and the work I do if you mention Tom Trips Out. 😎

I did go to the avse website and sent the form twice, no response. I'm flying in there in a few days so will make my way regardless. I do have experience teaching esl in the 90s and lived in Asia so it's not unfamiliar. But wondering why I didn't even get an email response.

Hey Tom, does AVSE include job placement with the standard TESOL course, or is it an additional thing you have to buy as an add on? I'll be sure to use your referral code too if I sign up, I assume it gives you commission or does it also help the person signing up as well? Thank you for the info!
@TomTripsOut
@TomTripsOut 4 ай бұрын
It’s standard with all the programs they offer. It’s also job assistance for life. The code does not help the person signing up, but if you use it I can take you out for food or get you a bit of cash once you get here.
@justinanotherplace
@justinanotherplace 4 ай бұрын
@TomTripsOut that's more than generous of you! I'm not the type to take other people's money but definitely wouldn't deny an offer to go out for food. While taking the course, instead of staying in a hostel id prefer to rent an apartment from the get go to get situated in. Would you happen to know a good area to look for apartments that would be good while taking the AVSE, but also still in a good region to land jobs after getting the certification? Im not sure if thats realistic with my little knowledge of the size of Phnom Penh and the amount of schools, maybe ill have no choice but to make more temporary lodging plans because of relocation inevitability, but id like to hear it from you since you have the knowledge! Thanks again

@@justinanotherplace there are A LOT of schools in Phnom Penh. So it’s unpredictable what school and what area of the city you’ll be working in. You may get interviews with several different ones. - the area where the course takes place is called Daun Penh. It’s close to riverside and the royal palace. - also a lot of people like living in an area like 3-4km south called Russian Market. It’s a cool neighborhood, but sort of far from AVSE. The entire city is about 12km across.
@TomTripsOut

@@justinanotherplace also when you get an apartment you don’t have to get an Entire year lease. Many offer 6 or 12 month, and some will allow even less. You get a better deal if you commit to a year, but you could try to ask for 3 month lease in your first apartment, and then move closer to work after that

@@TomTripsOut I've reached out to AVSE but they told me their offers does not include visa assistance or job placement
@TomTripsOut
@TomTripsOut 5 ай бұрын
@@user-vt8fo4dm7b They don"t sponsor people, but they help advise you on which Visa is the right one to apply for. - Also they could not guarantee you a job placement because, based on past experience, people with an African passport have challenges with getting hired. AVSE likes to be upfront about these unfortunate obstacles when dealing with people from Africa, so that you are aware of the potential risk. That being said, I have a handful of friends from Africa who teach here. It is not impossible, it just might take longer to find a job.

Im just more passionate about being a creator and a musician and I was at a crucial point where 6 months off could help me focus on this. Im currently in talks with a language centre to work mornings (part time) so we'll see how that goes. I was able to save like $400 USD a month while I was working full time. The money is great. unless you are fancy and go out drinking a lot.
