I loved this video especially 😂 it felt like a pep talk. And it was so nice to write these facts down to keep in mind as I struggle. You keep these things so relatable and real. Thank you again! Hope the rest of your week goes well!

I'm SO happy that this is a series. This is literally how much I want to know about someone's process and journey of reading in Japanese. Thanks so much for sharing! Your videos gave me the push I needed to just start and read :)

Dear Ally, thank you so much for answering my questions in such depth again. Your thoughts on it and sharing your whole experience with reading in Japanese as a beginner, has really helped me to rethink my own approach. Your absolutely right that increasing my reading volume is definitely necessary to ever get to that stage where I feel comfortable reading in that language. It was the same with my native language when I was a kid and it was the same with English. Thanks for the reminder. And thanks for also reminding me that at the beginning it is painful and sometimes not so much fun. But it’s the same for most people. Everyone has to go through it and avoiding it won’t help me with anything. So I finally started to read a few weeks back. I started with graded readers and I started to read them extensively - at least for the most part. And I must say although I still don’t enjoy every single one of them, I still came across some really interesting stories and it makes me proud to see the pileups of finished books ☺️ Thanks for your advice and this great series of videos you’ve created. They a really really helpful! ❤

have you ever reread the books you read extensively? i mean, since you probably didn’t understand the content 100%. do you reread them after a while (once you’ve gained more vocabulary through reading other books intensively)?

Loved the video, basically going through this now as I jump into video games in Japanese and N2 level. The best advice I have for anyone is to reflect on how they learned to read in their native language, and the challenges they faced and what age they learned what skills. Because we all learned how to read once. I think that's the best way to find out what will work for Japanese - to act as if you're a child again learning how to read.

Thank you for always making inspiring videos that answer all the questions we didn't even know we had yet! :) I will be in Fukuoka in the fall and was wondering if you have some favorite bookstores that you'd recommend checking out in the area. I'm at about an N2 level and am hoping to get a few novels.

That's the advantage of looking back on the past as I'm doing in this series, because I am now able to answer the questions I did not even intellectualize back, when I was still struggling at beginner/intermediate level in the language, all in the hope that this will ease you guys' own journey with the language! For used books, you can check out any BookOff store you can find in the city (there are many outlets) :) For new books, in Fukuoka you have a few very good bookstores but I would recommend you the biggest ones which are the Junkudo bookstore in Tenjin area, the Tsutaya bookstore in Ropponmatsu area, and the Maruzen bookstore + Kinokuniya bookstore in the Hakata station mall!! If you don't find there all the books currently commercialized in the country, I honestly don't know where else you can look haha

Another great video! Really enjoying your content ❤❤❤ Just recently finished my second book in japanese (even though studying the language since 2015😢) and struggled a lot because it was in Kansai dialect 😅 Have you read any book that was not 標準語, maybe also in some dialect? If so, did you try to still look up specific words or grammar ?
@arinoyume
@arinoyume 6 ай бұрын
Yes I did make this experience, without specifically looking for it: one of the short stories by Murakami I have read recently was basically entirely made of dialogs in Kansai-ben, and yes I did look up certain words or structures to ascertain their equivalent in standard japanese :) this is the short story called「イエスタデイ」!

Did you notice that by reading more, your listening comprehension also improved to some extent?
@arinoyume
@arinoyume 6 ай бұрын
Absolutely, but maybe not the way you think: I found that the best way I could connect my reading comprehension to my listening comprehension was by reading aloud instead of only in my head! Especially since at the beginning, it takes very long to get the 'internal monologue' when reading in a foreign language :)

Pardon encore pour le pavé,
@arinoyume

Coucou !! 👍🙂
