Stacey Here We Grow Again

Күн бұрын

Today I wanted to give you some tips on how I grow and take care of my Begonia Rex. She is starting to flower which is really nice to see her cute little pink blooms. She's really easy to care for and likes consistent waterings (trying not to over water), without letting the soil dry out completely to the bottom or the foilage can start to wilt. In this video I'm also going to go over the type of pot and potting soil I use along with how much sunlight she likes to get.
Please remember to like and subscribe if you would like to stay updated on more videos to come from "Stacey here we grow again".
As always, Thank you for watching and Happy planting! I really appreciate every one of you for stopping by and continuing to support me throughout my journey!!

I am having the hardest time with begonoa rex, and after multiple tries and dead plants, I still havent got it. So Im watching every video i can on these fussy plants. All the new growth dies and turns brown, i believe it's rotting. There's now a humidifier on them and they seem to be losing leaves less, but I think the soil is staying too wet and causing the new growth to rot before it can mature. How quickly do begonias need to dry out? The soil is still wet after a week or so. Maybe that should be cut down to a day or 3 instead of a week. There's perlite mixed in....maybe I need more? I also have coarse sand, pumice, and vermiculite to mix in with the coco coir.

Hi there Christina! I'm so sorry to hear that.. It sounds like it might be getting a bit too much water. I let the soil dry out almost all the way to the bottom before watering again. These can be very fussy at times your so right! I grow mine in 4-6 hrs of direct morning sun (so it's not too intense) and leave her in really bright, but indirect light the rest of the day. I feed the soil with my Dyna-Gro Grow 7-9-5, 1x a month and water when the soil is almost completely dry to the bottom. These like to be in a well draining soil, especially here in Florida, where the humidity and heat gets really intense. I use 1/4 parts succulent, cacti, palm and citrus mix and 3/4 parts potting soil. I use a terracotta pots because I live in florida and we get a lot of rain too. It helps to keep my roots healthier and it let's them breathe a bit more then the plastic pots. I'm sorry your having such a hard time. I'm getting a lot of videos together and I have one on taking care of my Begonia Rex plant that I'll be posting soon. Maybe it will help! If you need anyhing else please let me know. I'd love to help you in anyway I can!

You make it sound easy....I bought Begonia's on two occasions - including one that looked similar to yours, & I failed each time....... One question. It gets really hot in my part of the world. Do these plants wilt beyond a certain temperature, & if so, what's the best way to deal with that..?

Hi Polly, I'm so sorry to hear that your Begonia rex isn't doing too good! I keep mine in a terracotta pot because I feel it's much better than a plastic one (especially growing here in Central Florida). I had one last yr and it was in a plastic pot, in too much sun and it ended up dying on me, so that's why I love using terracotta. It allows the roots to breathe a lot better. I water when the soil is almost completely dry, but not totally because they seem to wilt when completely dry. I keep her in direct sun, indoors away from the window for about 5 to 6 hrs and she gets indirect bright light for the rest of the day. I hope that helps you to take care of her

Hello I am guilt late looking at the video MyIndoor Begonia plant Collection/June 2019 but I saw your comment on how you keep your begonia alive ,so far I have one that’s doing good,but I would like to have more my question was how often do you water them and do you fertilizer them.
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 3 жыл бұрын
Begonia plants can be a little tricky sometimes if not provided the right soil. I ended up losing my begonia last year because I had it in a really dense soil mix and I didn't realize the roots were rotting. For these, I really like to use half succulent soil and half potting mix especially in our type of climate here in Florida. The most important thing for these is to let the soil dry out completely to the bottom before watering again. But be careful not to let it dry out too much as a can damaged and wilt the plant. Hope this helps😊. As for fertilizing, i just fertilize with my organic granual fertilizer once every month during it's growing season. Anything around a 7-9-5 (NPK) should be ok.

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. All of my Rex begonias are dying within a year. It’s really a bummer. My angel wings do great. I have them in terra cotta, I don’t fertilize in dormant months, I’m in humid Michigan but winters are dry because of furnace heat. I keep them on pebble trays. They are out of the water. I let them get almost dry but it seems the stakes a;ways rot near the base of the plant. Are they too wet? I use a moisture meter because they are so finicky. Aaaaagh! I’m frustrated!

hi Stacey, if the leaf curl up and brown means its drying up due to sun heat? my window is facing SW and the plant is at my balcony just 3 feet away. I guess it get the morning sun till 12 to 1pm... thats bad right? the red one seems doing bad..only 1 leaf left.. my silver is fine... need some advise.

Hmm. It's really hard to say because I don't know what the plant looks like.. Mine gets about 4 hrs of morning sun and does really good. If it's too intense, meaning really hot, with a ton of heat, then that could be it. I noticed my Begonia rex plant struggled when I kept it in too much sun. The browning leaves can be many different things, but for me, it was the sun and the type of pot and soil I was using. I planted mine in 3/4 parts regular potting soil and 1/4 part succulent soil because these really like a lot of drainage material, so the roots can breathe.

My begonia has been dropping leaves like crazy. It's because the temps are reaching above 85-90°f and it doesn't really like it too much, so it's dropping it's leaves. I'll have to bring it inside now, for the rest of the spring and summer.

I used half premium all purpose potting mix + half perlite for mine, do you think that's an ok mix? I didn't think to add chunky bark or orchid mix now I'm worried :(
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 4 жыл бұрын
That should be great! If she's looking happy, you should be ok. Most people just use the potting soil and that's perfectly ok. I prefer to use the potting soil mixed with the succulent soil for a lot of my sensitive plants because we live in Florida where it gets really humid and it takes a lot longer for my soil to dry out. (Sometimes my soil stays wet for way too long and it causes the roots to suffocate and rot out. That's why I like to add the succulent soil, but if your in a drier climate, you should be ok with just the potting soil and perlite). The perlite will help with drainage quite a bit, I use it for every plant I grow pretty much.

These plants get shocked very quickly and are quite sensitive. I noticed begonias really like a well draining mix so I use half succulent soil and half potting mix for these. I always let the soil dry out completely to the bottom before watering again, but I don't let the soil stay dry in-between the waterings.

I feel like what you said about the terracotta being great for plants that need to stay moist is a little misleading. Plants that need to stay moist actually should NOT be in terracotta pots because they dry out far too quickly.

I'm sorry to hear that.. They can be fussy sometimes.. I only have this Begonia Rex variety, but all Rex's should be around the same care.. When you've adjusted in the past to different locations, did you wait a few weeks for a response and adjust slowly into the new spot? If done too often and too quickly it can cause plants to stress out even more. I keep mine indoors in an eastern facing exposure and it gets about 5 to 6 hrs of direct sun and bright but indirect light for the rest of the day. I planted mine in a terracotta pot and it really likes it.

I realize i'm a tad late to this particular party, but... I have a few, especially my Inca Flames, that gradually get brown, dry leaves and wither away, even though I do everything right in theory. I've now tried repotting them to see if that helps at all, but Im stumped - any tips?
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 3 жыл бұрын
This is a hard one to be honest. My begonia actually died on me because I had it in too much heat outdoors, when the weather was switching into spring-summer. Browning tips can mean a few different things. I know these can be sensitive to certain types of water, especially if its chlorinated. Plus they like to be treated a little like a succulent I've heard, using a well draining soil and letting the soil dry out to the bottom before watering again (but not completely.. thats the tricky part)

It's hard to say without seeing it, it could be many things. What type of soil is it in? There could be some root damage happening. The soil should be well draining and fast drying. Begonias don't like their soil to be too heavy/muddy around the roots.
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 2 жыл бұрын
Too much or too little food can also cause some leaf death to happen. There are so many factor to take into consideration when trying to figure out what's happening with a plant. Begonias are very sensitive and delicate plants.

I’ve killed so many Rex begonias. Ive spent so much money on them. They’re not cheap. I’ve moved them to every window in the place, lovingly spoken to them, bottom watered them, top watered them, not watered them, fed them, and they still die. I’m just about over them. I have two in the bathroom window, eastern morning sun, filtered light that I’m trying to save. If these die I’m done. 😢😢

It takes some time and practice to learn how to keep begonias. They can be picky if they're not in the right conditions. I try to stay away from plants that frustrate me. Gardening is meant to be relaxing and peaceful. If it doesn't give you peace, I'd say it's time to try something else 😊 plants like philodendron, pothos, dracaena, lucky bamboo are a little easier and doesn't require as much attention 😉

How often do you actually water it?
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 4 жыл бұрын
It all depends.. a lot comes into play with when to water. The time of year it is, the soil and pot it's in, is it in the sun or not really, is it outside or inside, is it hot, cold, rainy, dry, humid.. I water whenever the soil dries out completely that's the best way to explain it because it is pretty different for everyone. Hope that helps.
