A practical video, Gordon. As a fellow nearing 60 myself, I feel your pain when it comes to carrying camera gear. You offered some solid advice here. I generally use a Shimoda X30 because I have found that weight is only part of the equation. Another consideration is how well the bag is designed to distribute that weight. So far, the Shimoda is the best I've found, and the X30 is compact enough to make me limit my choice of gear while still having the room to accommodate what I actually need. My trusty Olympus E-M1 has finally died, so I am now using a Canon EOS R. It's a heavier choice, but I get around it, to some degree, by carrying the most versatile lenses I can. The 24-105 f/4L is a lovely lens optically, and has enough range to make it almost the only lens I need for most situations. My real interest in terms of your video, is what you've chosen for video and blogging. I was pleases to note that you got so much use out of the GoPro. I'd love to see a more in depth look at those options, including your audio set-up, which I noted, you really didn't talk about. Anyway, thanks for the excellent video.

Thanks! It's my knee that really complains about the weight of my bag nowadays. Keep it light and I can hike anywhere. Carry a bit of shopping home and I can be in a right state! As for my audio, I knew I wouldn't be capturing much on location as it'd be mostly b-roll to music. But for travel I'd take - and did take for my work - the Rode Wireless Go II and Lav mic. I also used that for the Sussex pieces to camera at the start and end, and I thought they sounded pretty good for outdoor locations. For pure voiceover at home I use a Rode NT USB. All the gear I use is in the description.

I'm just the far side of 60 and although I don't shoot videos or vlog, just take "stills" I'd say that a comfortable backpack is better than absolute lightness..... no point in being in pain from something rubbing or stabbing you when a few hundred extra grams can bring comfort. When buying a bag for long days out, IMHO it is essential to try it on with some of your own kit inside first, to make sure it remains comfortable when worn, and doesn't keep trying to slip off your shoulders. Great video, thanks

Hi Gordon. Thanks to some of your reviews a few years ago, I moved from FF to MFT, back in 2015. Certainly don't regret it, love my Olympus gear and upgraded from EM10 to EM5iii last year. I have stuck with the plastic 40-150mm f4-f5.6 but upgraded to the 12-40mm f2.8 Pro as my walk around kit lens along with a couple of primes. It all fits into a shoulder bag while still giving fantastic image quality in most conditions. As far as tech solution goes - I am a big fan of your 'In Camera' solution - try and get it right in camera and shoot in JPEG. The Olympus system as always worked well with my iPhone for both remote control as well as synching to Apple Photos. I use Apple Photos on my phone which now has access to EXIF date so you can update date, time and location where possible. But as now iOS15 now also lets me edit RAW images on my iPad too - I carry a Lightning Camera connector and that transfers RAW files quickly from the SD card. So that's it!

Very interesting as usual. When I was in my 30s I used to take a bicycle on a plane with all of my gear which meant I had to travel light and it is quite rewarding as it seems you have found, paring down the gear. As for water, I discovered that it is over-rated. I was waiting for a routine gall bladder operation in a hospital in Devon during Covid in 2021 and obstacles kept getting in the way, so I went without water for I think it was 9 hours or more and after a while, you realise that it can be done, so I no longer panic when my thirst isn't quenched immediately.

All fits in a Patagonia Atom 8L sling. Quality vs. size, it is hard to beat the RX100 and ZV1. // Edited to add: I find quick edits work well on an iPad (Mini 6 for me when traveling light) and more significant work on my 13" M2 Pro.

Interesting video and something worth considering, both for travel and hiking. I dont do video editing, so cant comment on that, but for a basic computer I use a MS Surface Go (+ keybord and a MS Bluetooth mouse). Certainly not as fast as one of the last iPads, but I get my preferred OS and programs. For travelling light I have the RX100 VII, but also a RX10 IV if I want something more powerful. For the RX100 I have a Lensmate adapter that allow the use of 52mm filter so I can use a CPL or ND filter. I have several packs. Two with similar design as the one you used in the video, but I dont like the design with the top-front pocket on the "wrong" side of the zipper as "it flops down" with anything heavy in it - as you mentioned. Since I like to have my camera there for easy access it's really annoying. What I've found works better are packs with a top lid and the pocket in the lid. That design feels more secure for carrying a camera. It makes a lot of difference with a camera like the RX10, but works better even the much lighter RX100. Lots of options with that design available. Personally I think a "combi pack" that has a room for photo gear, a room for tablet/laptop and a room for other stuff often make sense. I get much easier access, better protection build in and room for a rain jacket for a slightly higher weight. Again much to choose from in the range from slightly under a kilo to 1.5 kilos.

Great suggestions and I also love the RX10 IV, it's such an amazing camera, but I didn't need its reach for this trip. The RX100 was a loaner, so I didn't get to try a filter kit on it as they normally glue on!

Nicely done! Did something similar to celebrate my 64th the other day (only a day trip however)....solo hiked, climbed a local peak (no trails, you have to find your way through forest and ridges) and wanted to keep camera gear light. Used the Sony rx100Vii, my iPhone 11 and Sony FDR 3000 (not quite as good stabilization as the gopro, but always looks wonderful). Worked so well it made we wonder why I ever take anything else. Trying to decide on a new ‘better’ camera now for hiking, and debating on whether I should simply add a ZV1 instead more for vlogging or talking head shots.would have it all covered then. Lovely scenery btw! Thank you! Ps...it is as much about volume/space as well!
@cameralabs3 жыл бұрын
We sound very alike! The ZV1 is nice, and the footage will of course match the RX100 perfectly, but I'd feel they are a bit close in overall form factor and features. Sure the ZV1 does give you the brighter but shorter lens with the ND plus the better mic and shoe but I'd find it hard to carry both. I'd be almost tempted for an X100V for photography and a ZV1 for filming. Too many choices! But i'm glad you're finding a solution that works for you, and it's interesting we've followed similar lines.

@@cameralabsa somewhat dated update: just did a wonderful backpack to Cape Scott…think westcoast rainforest and wonderful pristine sandy beaches (and almost no people). Access is not too long, about 17.5 km, but trail is wet and at times muddy (albeit often flat). Same cameras as in my original post and when you are trying to keep a pack light it makes a huge difference. I did miss having a longer telephoto 2x..once taking a video of a bald Eagle above in a tree (captured but not close enough for me to really stand out) and the other of whales in distance (didn’t even bother). Something around 500 to 600 mm equivalent would have been perfect. Could I have taken it…yes, but a much heavier kit and much more volume taken up in pack (equally important). Now if they could bump up the 200mm on the Sony to at least 300 that would at least help a little. Also considering the Panasonic Lumix ZS200 in lieu, at least for trips where a big zoom would be handy. Up to 200 hard to beat the Sony!

Hi Gordon, There's an easy way to fix the 30fps from your phone, I had the same issue. Render at 25p as normal, which gives you the jerky pulldown effect. I just got back from a week in Yellowstone National Park in the US and I wish I could cut my gear weight in half without losing any performance. I carried two R5's with battery grips and a EF600 F4 IS II, RF 100-500, RF 50 1.8 and 1.4 and 2x TC along with a Macbook Air. Internet connection doesn't effect me since I don't do any editing or uploading while away I just backed up each days shots onto Samsung T5 SSD drives. I guess I could've left the 50mm 1.8 at home but I don't think I would've noticed the weight savings at all. And I do get all that into one backpack that fits in the overhead bin without a problem.

Blimey, that's a big kit. I understand the two body setup for responsive wildlife photography, but that's a lot to carry. Do you think you could realistically do it all with the 100-500? I realise it's nowhere near as bright as the 600 f4 at the long end and will lack the potential for bokeh, but the focal length is similar, so it may be doable in some situations. Or bring a friend!

Regarding frames rates.. You can film at 25fps on the phone using 3rd party apps, but they tend to me less convenient than the Samsung app. I found it easier to switch the other cameras to 30fps instead - although this is a bit of a pain on the Sony (you have to switch it to NTSC mode). The skin tones are a bit weird on the GoPro, flat profile fixes this but then you have to colour correct in post.

Hi Gordon. I have a 4G Broadband modem at home as I live in a rural area. This allows me to take it with me when I travel. No need to use dodgy hotel or cafe broadband and I have an unlimited plan so provided I can plug it into power I can use it with all my devices just like I was sat at home. I get 40mb down and 35mb up nearly everywhere I use it. Well worth checking out

I have unlimited data and tethering on my mobile - and 5G too where available - and it works brilliantly for normal web use in areas where there's reasonable coverage. BUT the real test for any internet connection is uploading a very large file where you're asking for a consistent throughput. I find it's great for the first few seconds or even minutes, but after that it slows or stops, which is no good for uploading 5-15GB to KZbin. But of course I know you do youtube too, so have you tried to upload one of your files over mobile? How big are they?

That’s a very useful video - i end up with very similar travel gear. I use rx100 mk3 that gives a better low light performance due to its max 1.8 aperture, but lacks of zoom. I do not use zoom lenses too much when I travel, but would be nice to come up with a solution for that. I use a Vaude cycling bag pack (super light) or, when I need to carry several clothes for sudden changes in weather or temperature, I use a very cheap dry backpack (generic) brand, clothes are packed to do a bit of cushioning on my back and offer some protection to my gear. I also use separate dry bags in my backpack for ipad and cables/batteries/memory card reader, I take a battery pack for recharging my sony, and an inexpensive dummy battery that i can attach to my a battery pack when I want to take time lapses. This is by far my most functional and most used gear setup. Thank you for the video. I really enjoyed it.

Hi Gordan. Thanks for the video. I couldn't agree more. I'm older and absolutely refuse to carry around a full-frame camera and lenses when hiking/walking/touring. I mix and match gear, but lately, I have been using a Canon M6 Mark II and a few of its very lightweight (plastic) lenses. I am more than happy with the camera with the exception that it is not weather sealed. I also use an iPad when traveling as I write a blog. I use a Logitech clamshell keyboard that serves as a case for the iPad. Some may find the keyboard too small. However, it works for me despite the fact that I have pretty big hands. They always say that the best camera is the one that you have with you.

Excellent video Gordon. I personally think it is interesting to see what cameras you choose to use and purchase having tested the majority of the cameras available on the market. Is there much weight difference between the Sony Rx100 and the Sony you normally use for KZbin?
@cameralabs3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I normally film my videos with a Sony A6400 which weighs just under 500g without a lens, so it depends on the lens you use. If you want optical stabilisation and decent quality from a zoom, it'll take you over 1kg. The 16-50 kit zoom is very small and light, but horrible quality. The 24mm f1.8 prime I use is lovely, but obviously fixed, quite heavy and no IS, so I need to use it with a tripod. I did think about it, and had the body had IBIS I could have made it work for me. I do actually quite like travelling with only ONE focal length as it forces you to be creative and also ties the photos together better as a collection.

Great video, as always. There would of course be times when a focal length longer than 200mm would be required for getting the "best shot," but I was wondering if the 200mm equivalent focal length sufficed for you during your trip. I just ordered a used Sony RX100V for its low light capability [still on its way] aiming to pair it w/ my Sony RX10ii w/ its 24-200mm equivalent and a constant f2.8, plus a planned GoPro 7 for the ultra-wide shots as my traveling kit. I also have both the Canon DSLR (APS-C and FF) and Lumix mirrorless systems that I probably will get rid of. With the Lumix (GX8 & GX9), I have a focal range of 18mm to 600mm covered through various zooms and primes. Being that I am spoiled w/ having that long range, I feel limited just having 200mm as my longest w/ the RX10ii. I'm looking of course at the RX10iv that goes up to 600mm equivalent, but those things are very expensive, albeit it has many great new features. Should I upgrade to the RX10iv, or should I just get the Sony HX99 w/ its maximum range of 720mm equivalent as a complement to the RX10ii, even though the IQ would be considerably less? I figure there probably won't be that many instances when I'd really need a super long focal length anyway, esp since I'm not into bird photography. As a matter of fact, I rarely use my Lumix 100-300mm II f4.0-5.6. Your thoughts would be much appreciated. (BTW, I would pronounce the "Dakine" bag you featured the way Hawaiians say it; i.e., "da kine" which they use to mean "the kind." Just saying. LOL! )

I totally get what you mean. I had a Sony a1000 with a bunch of lenses and I got tired of lugging it around and its bloody menus. I found I was leaving it at home a lot. So I decided to go back to the Canon Powershot cameras (where I started my journey). I got a G13 and it's a great camera but it was 2016 and have an optical viewfinder divorced from the lens was just something I didn't want to deal with any more it was so archaic. So I searched and eventually found a great deal on a refurb g5x. I love it and I wear my canon g5x on a really thick soft lanyard around my neck. I loath the bulkiness of neck-straps and you can use this as a wrist strap as well with a wrap around the wrist or 2. Yeah, I still take pics with my phone sometimes but I love my Canon and I loath carrying around lenses. I can't live without its light filter and unless they bring out a Power shot with a viewfinder again and maybe a more powerful zoom I see no reason to replace it. What's really funny is I got so used to the low light performance of my G13 and my new galaxy note that I'm continually amazed by the low light capability of the g5x and we all know that it was not bleeding edge in low light even when it came out. 😅😅 Honestly, I think we've gotten a bit spoiled there but damn I love the versatility of the g5x. It's a Jack of all trades (master of none) in a small body that with its controls I can consistently get good clear shots out of. Anything else is all on me. 😅 I don't recommend one at full price but if you can find it for at least a couple hundred off I say go for it just as a camera you can take anywhere just like the Sony A100. That's a great camera too but damn I hate the Sony GUI. As to the G13 I think I might give it to my niece or nephew for Christmas. I think it would be a great camera to learn photography on. The one thing I didn't like was the e-m5 couldn't charge off USB, so I had to buy a 3rd party battery charger. Having everything charge off USB was also really good.

Yes, definitely, being able to use on charger for as much as possible is an important goal. All my gear now is USB chargeable.

gordon. u have become my hero!!!!!! i bought ur book and, fell in luv with the photos. i was beginning to hate photography. i found that everyone who bought a camera. was automatically a photographer!!!! what i found was. they suxed at taking photos and, were good at editing. which, in my case drove me nuts. then i saw ur photos straight out of camera with no editing and jpeg. that's how i want to be. thanks for showing me. there are still real photographers out there. i am sure. i will get a lot of backlash. again!!!!!!!! u are now my hero!!!!!!!!

Thanks! I think it's ok to approach image creation in whatever way you like, I know some people who's technique is more like painting and involves more in the editing than at the capture. But personally speaking that's not for me. As you know, I like to try and get as much right as possible in-camera at the point of capture. Unless you're into heavy HDR, I'd say it's quite possible to get 99 to 100% of the results you want this way.

What was the charging equipment like, mostly cables? I still carry the 6D and even with 2 f/4 lenses it can weigh u down and the battery charger takes up too much space. Good vid in nice places 👍

Thanks! Everything in that setup I took is USB chargeable, so one small charger does it all. Most new cameras, even big ones, are USB chargeable now - makes a big difference when travelling!

How did you get the files off the cameras onto the iPad? Wifi? A SD card reader?
@cameralabs3 жыл бұрын
Yep, and the latest iPads have an OS with a file manager.

My micro 4/3 cameras ( gxh 850 or M5) with 14-140 are my go equipment, but after watch your video, a go pro 10 and lumafusion/ iPad would be a great solution. Thanks!!

Thanks for the great video. I'm personally torn about going light when I'm traveling because (although I'd love to lighten my load) I'm traveling to see spectacular sights and I want to use my best gear to capture those gorgeous sights which means a full frame camera and bigger heavier lenses.

That's always the catch 22, and for me, i'd always lug my favourite and best gear everywhere I went. I'm making a change now because the weight is giving my knees problems. If I could still carry the weight for long hikes, I would.
