You remind me of Morpheus... with two doors. This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the door on the left-the story ends, you wake up in your bed and you're monolingual. You take the right door-you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep this linguistic rabbit hole goes. Remember: all I'm offering is the truth. Nothing more.

my mother tongue language is mandarin, but my parents speak hokkien, n my grandma speak cantonese, that's how i consumed 3 languages at a v young age. and my mom always put the vcr tape of sesame street, barneys... etc american kids show to learn english. when ive went to elementary school, our edu' system stricted for all chinese student to learn Malay and British English. then when in middle school i was a total anime nerd dude, therefore ive learned japanese. after graduated from highschool, ive met my ex bf who's from Bangladesh, and at the same time i'm into clubbing n met a lot of Thai people, thus ive learned Thai, Bangladesh, Hindi and focus on Japanese at the same time. til now, so far ive learned a lil bit of Korean, Arabic, Tamil and Javanese (an Indonesian dialect). it is possible to learn multiple language at the same time. the key point that i learn multiple languages at the same time is, to learn the languages that are having similar grammar structures, that make it easier to memorizing it.

@BatJoker lots of apps and websites out there to connect with people and Skype chat. Also if you're open to learning any language almost every city in the world has at least some immigrants or immigrant community. Try connecting at markets and restaurants like laoshu does. Find some books with grammar and vocab, download music and shows. There is always a way if you want it bad enough.

I'm like that too. I couldn't even watch this video all the way through in one go, even though it's something that I wanted to watch and it's in my native language. This is what I would advise people like me to try, maybe it'll help you: Put the language on in the background, like music/TV/podcasts ALL THE TIME, (if it's going to piss off other people use headphones). It is best if it's the same music/TV/podcast that you put on each time, or rather a small playlist of a few things on repeat, (If it starts to really annoy you move onto something else, otherwise you will just focus on how irritated you are.) You'd be surprised how much that can help you, even when you think you're not listening, you're at least picking up on the rhythm of the language (great for your accent). You still need to study, so do it in regular ten minute intensive bursts, because that is better than nothing, and for some people it's better than studying solidly for hours. I used to force myself to study in the way they teach you to at school. Man that sucked! I learnt absolutely nothing, except for the reason why I had hated school so much.

I do love Chinese culture and ideograms. These are marvellous but I have to admit I have lost motivation to learn them. I find it too tough, this is not impossible but for keeping it in mind, I think that you have to focus only (or almost) on the learning of hanzi/kanji (for Japanese).
@zabaanshenaas
@zabaanshenaas 9 жыл бұрын
fi vantvcs You also have an interesting list. It's good to see Nyungar, Tahitian, Ojibwe, and some other indigenous languages. It's true that we have to concentrate on those languages that we have more chance of studying properly due to having good resources, but there is no harm in exploring other fields. Obviously we can't learn all the languages of the world but we can try our best with the resources available. These days there is so much that can be found online for free, unlike before when we had to rely on the few bookshops that sold resources for so-called rare languages.

I am actually learn Thai full time, and just learn some stuff about Chinese as well as practice it with my friend. Then when I can use Thai, I'll go for Chinese full time, and will choose between Japanese or Korean for the next target language. This is really helpful. Thank for sharing. By the way, if you want to practice your Khmer sometimes in the future, I am happy to help you. Good luck :) Rith

Hey Moses. You're insane, man. But incase you ever decide to visit Mexico, somewhere in the future it'd be awesome to see you try to dabble in Nahuatl, the ancient language of the aztecs that's still spoken in some parts of the country. Or if you go to the state of michoacan, you could try to speak purepecha (known as tarasco by the spanish speaking mexicans) amongst all the other languages you speak. Also, language wise what do you plan to achieve by age 60? That'd be an interesting answer.

I like your approach to language learning and have been doing some of what you have suggest we do. Right now, like you I am, doing several languages and I plan to incorporate some of what you said in this video. I might concentrate on two though - Spanish and Mandarin. And in the back ground learn the other just to get the feel of them - French, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, German, Japanese. Alot of the language is similar so it does not take a lot to remember things in a language. For example Italian is like a cross between Spanish and French with it own twist. So I find myself able to remember more of the languages when I can cross reference them. But what I want to know is have you every thought about use another language other than English when you are learning a new language? For example say you weren't fluent in Japanese and since you know Chinese why not learn Japanese through Chinese.That what I am planning to do when I become fluent in Spanish and if I can find Chinese books and audio that can do it. Assimil has titles through with is can be done. I know that the Chinese will have a lot of resources for learning other language through which many of their citizens learn other languages. I just want to get an idea what are your thoughts on this process as it would seem to be self re-enforcing. The reason I say this is because I remember watching a youtube video in Spanish teaching Japanese, this was after trying doing some Japanese on my own for sometime, and I got some insight that I didn't get learning it through English (granted I could not make out everything he was saying, since I am still not fluent and anyway I don't quit remember what it know now). I am living in Jamaica and there is not a lot of opportunity to practise all these language that I am learning (maybe the 2 that I will be concentrating on) but my aim is not for the present. I will be utilizing many of the suggest that you have given us though to accomplish becoming fluent in several different language. Your activities have been a motivation factor in my learning languages. P.S. I too love your level up videos

I know this is possible to learn two or three languages at the same time (if possible not too linked languages for preventing from confusion) but it does need lot of time and motivation necessarily. Personnaly I prefer learning one after one but I do like to make a linguistic bath a long time ago before the studying of one language= to read grammars, to have a look in dictionnaries, to hear some broadcasts even if you don't know the language. With the time, this becomes passive memory and when you're activating it, things are clear and you're somehow surprised that you have yet a few basis in the studied language in question.

Do you do anything to suppliment your mental health? If I read take in media constantly I end up stressing my brain out and get pains in my occipital or temporal lobes, my eyes start shaking, etc. Do you take any herbs or suppliments, like nervines such as skullcap or lemonbalm, gotu kola and eleuthero, brain vitamins and aminos like GABA, CoQ10, Omega 3s and 6s, B vitamins, etc.?

Moses ... Don't let languages take over your life ! You may like 'Learn 50 languages' app .. go via the phrasebook to find 'Did you know'. 50 plus short language articles (each translated into 50 languages) .. read an article per day in several languages... as maintenance exercise ? The articles are informative and interesting. By the way I loved your vid !

You mention Somali is your primary focus, and the others are basically review. But did you build up those others first one by one? Or do you add languages while maintaining your Somali focus, doing them every other day or something?

15:03 How about Inuktikut? :D But yeah, learning several languages at the same time (and I mean, _really_ at the same time, not carrouseling through them one by one) has some serious advantages, especially if they have any common ancestors (like, for example, many European languages have their roots in Latin), when you're doing it the right way. And by "right way", I mean exploiting those similarities so that by learning one of them, you're automatically learning several of them at the same time. For example, I once took a French dictionary and started reading it, page by page, and putting little dots of different colours next to each word: green ones for those that were spelled the same way as in English, but pronounced differently; blue dots for those that were similar to Polish (borrowed either way); orange dots for those that were based on Latin; and red dots for those that were unique to French. I also marked all common prefixes and suffixes with yellow. And quickly it turned out, that I pretty much know roughly 50% of the vocabulary because it's based on Latin or similar to English or Polish. Another roughly 30% were the same words as in other places of the dictionary, just with those prefixes attached to them. So I only had to know what the prefix means and the non-prefixed word in order to know the rest. In the end, there remained roughly 20% of the dictionary with the words that I would have to actually learn ;) Too bad that dictionaries are not organized that way. Although I understand the idea of organizing them alphabetically, for quick lookup of words you already know how to spell but you don't know the meaning of, it's also a very bad way of organizing it for someone who learns the language. It would be better to have those words grouped by topics and parts of speech (that's how I organize them myself when I learn new vocabulary), and keeping words based on the same root together, without any affixes. The affixes should be listed elsewhere, just once and for all, so that you could mix & match them yourself (which usually works fine, and even if it turns out that there's no such word yet, your interlocutor will most likely understand what you meant anyway). Grammar rules are often very similar too, because there are some universal patterns of speech that are present in most languages in one form or another. They just differ in the set of tricks they use to express those ideas. For example, every language I've seen so far has some idea of adjectives and combining them with nouns into a noun phrase, and adverbs to describe either adjectives or verbs. They differ just in what comes first in such a phrase, or what aspects of those words have to match (gender agreement etc.) So when I'm learning grammar, I usually just go through my checklist of things I have to find out: How do they express plurality of nouns? Do they distinguish genders? Do they distinguish specific from general things? If they do, how do they do it? Do they have any articles/determiners for that? Do they have any case system? What are the rules for word formation? How do they combine ideas into complex words? How do they convert verbs into adjectives (participles), or verbs into nouns (gerunds)? What trick do they use to distinguish the present from the past and the future? How do they distinguish continuous actions from completed actions or repeated vs. one-shot? What are their words for "and", "or", "not", "but", "because", "therefore" etc.? (useful for combining simple sentences into complex ones) If I know how grammar works in general, I can try to find those patterns in every new language I'm trying to learn, because grammar structures are quite generic.

Hi Moses, next time you make one of these "How I do..." videos, could you talk a bit about how you work in improving comprehension? Particularly listening comprehension, but reading comprehension too. Looking at my peers, this seems to be a common difficulty. Thanks!

I would love to learn Lao. I grew up with a Lao family and love their culture. I never caught on to a single word though. It's been 15 years since then and now I'm working in a manufacturing plant surrounded from Lao natives. It's difficult to find effective sources of English to Lao and vice versa. Do you have a plan to release a FLR Method approach to teaching Lao in the near future?
