If I could make a full Django tutorial that was only 20 minutes long I would. Django's concepts are easy enough to grasp on a basic level but if you want to build something real, it takes hours to truly explain 1 full project. From there, it's going to take anyone hours (as Dennis is essentially saying) to even get comfortable building it on your own. I totally agree that you should find 1 project, improve several times on your own, and then move to another project. Concepts are great but projects put the concepts into context (ie where you actually use them) so the goal should be to make as many real projects as possible. To truly master learning web app development, as I'm sure Dennis would agree, you have to then turn around and teach it. That will make you clarify your thoughts and well as drill down in what you really know. Further, it can help others learn too. The world needs more developers. We cannot leave it in the hands of a few otherwise all the software we get will be the same. We need YOUR unique perspective. Dennis you rock. Keep going. Thanks for showing others what they can do.

My approach to python, flask and django was very similar. Didnt particularly like the content in my bootcamp so I found Corey Shafer and learned from his 2 great series on flask and django, built along with him, watched maybe 3/4 times and then branched off to make a nice recipes app in flask and a bugtracker app with django, when i got stuck used mostly SO and docs. He didnt go very deep into database tables and querying so had to figure that stuff out myself, but it was fun. And like you I had course deadlines to push me on.

Dennis - Thank you for the insight and great videos. I've started on a similar path and without teachers like you it would not be possible. Still lots to learn. Programming has really taught me discipline and how to breakdown complex problems into small digestible chunks. I did the same thing when learning Laravel. I must have built 5 different types of Laravel applications before I was comfortable with the framework. The same goes with any framework. You just have to build build build until you get it.

I agree with you 100%. The way I learned django was just doing a project and using stackoverflow, official docs, and reading articles I searched on google. In the process, I also learned CI/CD with CircleCI lol.

I think having a group of people with similar python skills and following the same course online and then meeting every week to discuss will also help than only doing it alone. But it is very very difficult to find a group of people that are commited and want to hold you accountable. So if you find these people hold on to them.

I am really following what you just said in this video. I learned from MDN Django tutorial recently and was able to create my own project of book distribution web app with request processing, feedback and searching. I did this in a month and right now working on the designing of the web app. Though i wasn't able to implement my search as Ajax cause i have to submit this as my project in college tomorrow. But i loved your idea of implementing this in a To-do app. Thanks for inspiring. I will create a to-do app next.

Great advice. If you have a deadline that you have to build your own app from scratch in 3 months that will also help. I just started with django. I followed a 1 hour cours of Mosh and then I bought his course for 47 dollars. Now I’m doing that course. Following steps. I will follow your advice and after the course try to break the code down and add my own features. Next I will try to make my own app. Thanks for breaking it down.

ive been learning python for almost 6 months(its my first-ish language, i have some rudimentary experience programming PHP and java). I feel like i grasp a lot of concepts, but i need more practice doing projects. Think redoing tutorials solo is a really great idea, I will most definitely try that and make my own variations which i have done in some tutorials. I think he learned the basics in a short period, but i'd like to give my 2 cents... Learn at your own pace! He obviously has experience and needed to learn this for work. I didn't, if i had learned python any faster i would have been burned out and frustrated very early on(i almost was XD). I have tried learning PHP and java but got very frustrated early on, so take your time to stay motivated and stick with it! Also having a good community to answer questions/fix bugs is vital!
