I used to be a sweet latte guy, but then had a similar experience with cold brews. Over time I got less and less sweet foam, so I got accustomed to the cold brew taste. They’re just so smooth and don’t feel as hateful as black espresso.

Heheh I like how you described it. Black espresso really does taste like HATE. Cold brews are sooo mellow. Works with teas that are susceptible to bitterness too! It's the hot water that awakens bitter compounds so brewing in cold water circumvents that!

I'm the same way, cold brew isn't as acidic so it oddly doesn't taste that bitter. It makes it much easier to drink on it's own.

@@happybunnyntx Yeah, I much prefer the taste of cold brews than black coffees, but ironically cold brews have cleansed my palette to the point where I enjoy a simple black coffee. Obviously I have a preference for the smoothness of cold brew, but it’s interesting how it prepared me for other “black” drinks

Started because I got interested in making coffee! From the kind of roast you do, where the beans come from, how fresh they are, how precisely you brew, freshly grinding the beans... the ritual of it became really soothing! Milk, creamer, and sugar easily mask poorly made coffee, so I started drinking it black to see how I was doing and what "notes" I could taste bean to bean. It has been a fun hobby! I still drink dark roast and condensed milk in Vietnamese Coffee, but these days I always drink light and medium roasts black.

I was known for stealing my uncle's watered-down iced coffee at the age of 5 and have loved coffee ever since. My current favorite coffee has to be Vietnamese coffee (preferably iced because I like cold drinks) because of the bitter taste. I want to try black coffee in the future though!

As a barista I think cutting it with cream is totally fine, the only time I'd say drinking it black is essential or worthwhile is when it's a high quality or single origin coffee bean brewed and roasted by professionals.

I've been drinking black coffee but with sugar since I was around 11. I only started drinking pure black coffee around last year (I was 20 then) and it was surprisingly easy for me. Partly because I have been cutting sugar from my tea in an effort to reduce my sugar intake. So my taste buds were sort of accustomed to the bitterness by then. I still like my latte and all but I usually go for black coffee when trying a new roast to get a better grasp on the flavor profile of that particular roast.

How I got introduced to black coffee. We were so poor, we can only afford 2 Philippine peso (that $0.04) sachets of instant coffee and can't buy Coffeemate or sugar. We only had a decent meal once a week. But we overcame that. I'm earning a decent salary and we can afford the things we couldn't before like eating at high-end restaurants or just having Starbucks delivered to our house.

I noticed that „most“ Asian people drink black coffee without any milk (I mean more like Korea, Japan, china, Indonesia) I thought it is maybe because of the lactose intolerance some/ most have but later I learned that they look so much at staying thin that they even don’t even add a little of milk or coffee.. even the guys ?! at least this is what I heard from some students… but who knows why it is really so „popular“ over there to drink it just pure black coffee also they call it Americano over their and Espresso Shorts

Black coffee I've found is better stronger. The lighter the roast, the more sour and nasty it tastes black. Use darker roasts, and it definitely helps to brew it cowboy style instead of using a coffee maker.

As a lactose intolerant person, I can’t imagine drinking anything with milk. Even if I use lactose free or plant based milk, the very thought of “diary” or “dairy-like” induces nausea. So I’ve always had my teas and coffees with no creamer and no sugar. Key is high quality coffee, matcha and teas. That said, you don’t need to force yourself to like black coffee if you like your lattes. Just be mindful of the sugar content or use Splenda. Milk is good for you if you can digest it. I wish I could have lattes (hint: my user name) but I just wouldn’t be able to.

You are not to remove sugar or cream gradually. That's not the problem. The problem is bad coffee you are making. Real good coffee bean with pour over style is not bitter at all but is actually sweet and bright.

So basically the best way to drink black coffee is to drink actual coffee. For me, I never really liked the taste of coffee, until I discovered a guy that offered me high quality coffee. Then I thought about how it was not incredibly thick and burnt and punching me in the face, but had that wake-you-up powerful good coffee smell. Then I read a newspaper that said basically all the cheap local 'coffees' were made of intentionally burnt corn syrup with intentionally burnt soy bean to imitate real coffee beans, which confirmed why I could never liked it and had so wrongly rated Vietnamese coffee the worst tasting thing to ever be considered food by any human standard. Love Vietnamese coffee now. When you can get your hands on high quality beans, they are literally the best in the world.

Coffee if brewed right doesn't have those bad taste qualities (burnt, sour, bitter, astringent, pungent). What makes it addicting is the taste notes that hit when you sip and that lingering after taste that goes on for minutes even hours.

One can only appreciate black coffee if it's done right. The quality of coffee beans, brewing techniques are very important. Even black coffee drinkers would not drink badly prepared ones.

I just pour hot water through a filled coffee filter and it tastes amazing honestly. I get the cheapest, strongest coffee powder and use a lot, so the coffee tastes rich and not too bitter.

I used to drink black coffee more religiously until I got food poisoning one day (not from the coffee) and I was drinking black coffee that day. I was so traumatized by the experience that I couldn't stand the smell of black coffee cuz it always made me nauseous. So I started drinking it w/ cream and sugar again until I started drinking cold brew out of habit. Now I'm pretty much stuck on cold brew for a while until I can drink hot black coffee again.

One of the ways for me is to treat it like dark chocolate. Let it slowly enter your mouth (slurp for extra flavors if you're alone), let it sit there for at least three seconds and slowly swallow not all but in small amounts. That feels insanely extra but doing that and variants of that helps to really appreciate the flavor compared to if i just swallowed it instantly my mouth would die. Also could try light-roast if you don't like that bitterness to it

I got into black coffees through iced black Americanos because ommmg espressos flavour is fricking magnificent when there's a bit of ice and water to dilute, it has these notes that u can't enjoy when u drink it with sugar or dairy. That's not to say I don't enjoy it with those things as well but seriously trying black iced Americanos is what altered my brain chemistry and did it for me so I'm now able to enjoy coffee black

Most coffee they sell is bad. Good coffee tastes good. Cold brew is less bitter than coffee brewed with other methods, but the real trick is to add a pinch of salt to your black coffee. It decreases its acidity.

And then there is me… so I’ve been drinking coffee since I was 7 (I’m now 17) and I always used to drink my coffee with WAYYYYYY to much cream and sugar. Anyway, one day I simply decided that it was to much work to put cream and sugar in my coffee so I just poured it and went upstairs. Haven’t gone back. Made that decision when I was 12

To me it’s really no different than drinking sodas or sports drinks since they are also usually caffeinated, if anything the coffee is healthier, young kids basically shouldn’t ever have caffeine though.
