that's so cool! I have always loved languages too. I want to become fluent in a lot of languages as well. When I was about your age I didn't speak a lot of languages, only Dutch, a bit of English and I could understand French and Taqvaylit a bit (my dad's languages). I didn't really think I'd be that good at languages, but I pushed through. Now I'm 15 and I'm fluent in Dutch, English and French., and I'm studying Japanese, German and Russian. It's amazing what you can achieve in a few years. Keep pushing through, it's already amazing that you speak 2 languages fluently and are studying another at 11!

Oh you're not alone! My family was NEVER interested in languages or in any country ( we're from South America) one of my cousins had this old looking book about geography and I loved reading it as a child, it had a lot of information about different countries, I was fascinated by it, so that's how I became interested in languages without having any contact with any language unlike Lindie, I think she's very lucky she can share about languages with family members and had the opportunity to live in many different countries.

@@carinalll7278 I'm one of those bilingual children and believe me - growing up with several languages doesn't matter if you don't use all languages frequently. I ended up speaking only one of the two languages (+ English and another language because of school) and feel like a failure because of it. Of course growing up multilingual since childhood is a different experience but learning languages and immersing yourself in cultures is something you can still do and you learn so much from it - no matter when you started. It can be such a fun, hard and eye opening process. I know the jealousy but you can turn it into a fuel, something that keeps you learning. Become one of those people you're admiring. At least that's what I try to tell myself. I'm wishing you the best.

after becoming a polyglot (5 languages at C2 level, speaking 7), I realised I was actually autistic and hyperlexic (hence my language talent; I taught myself to read at 4). I've met many polyglots since and the vast majority seem autistic to me or are openly so. inborn polyglottery is correlated to a high verbal IQ and is thus a form of neurodiversity. being very verbal means many people will be missed and will never be identified/identify as autistic. but (hyper)verbality definitely is one of autistic traits. this is where the talent, a dissecting, pattern-observing, dedicated mind and the strong focus come from, and I couldn't be happier about discovering and embracing my neurology 🌈✨

Lindie, I want to sincerely thank you. The catalyst for my language learning story over the past few years was your videos. In 2017, I decided to start learning Japanese on a whim, just because I was bored one day and had not much better to do. I asked for Japanese textbooks and workbooks for my 13th birthday, and shortly after I came across your videos, I discovered many Japanese resources that helped me learn. Your passion and dedication inspired me so much and allowed me to keep going. When I reached high school, I was able to test with the Japanese teacher at my school and enter the 3rd-year Japanese class as a first year. Now, I'm happy to say that I've just taken the AP Japanese exam (a type of advanced high school exam in the US) and am now reentering Japanese study on my own. In addition, this start with Japanese allowed me to explore other languages as well. I have studied conversational Spanish and am now practicing it at the job I work with Spanish speakers. I signed up for Latin classes at school and am studying grammar and history through that fascinating language. I dabbled in Korean, German, French, Chinese, Persian, and Vietnamese, having so much fun and connecting so much across cultures with each. My most proud language so far, however, is Arabic - last year I signed up for a govt. sponsored Arabic program on a whim, and learned so much about this fascinating culture as well as meeting some of my best friends in the class. This summer I'm participating in a virtual Moroccan exchange program and am so excited to continue learning Arabic and hopefully use the language to help those in need in the global and my local community. My language learning story set off so many interests for me - linguistics, other cultures, international relations and politics, and especially helping under-served communities. Now that I'm 16 and starting to choose my path in life, I know that my language experience is going to inform so much of my personal and professional journeys. It completely changed the way I think and view the world and became such an important passion for me - and I honestly believe that viewing your videos 3 years ago allowed me to continue that passion. I'll definitely continue to come back to your resources to help me learn and as a reminder of how and why I started. いつもリンコさんに感謝しています。本当にありがとうございます💞

I have many memories of whenever I would hear a language, whether I knew the language or not, I would instantly get excited and very happy. At first I thought it was because I got good grades and I was good at it. Nevertheless, I think I finally figured out what I liked about learning languages. I've come to realize that 1) I love learning in general and since language learning is a process, I'm constantly learning 2) I can use my abilities to help others whether it's when I'm teaching a language class or when I'm interpreting for a patient in a hospital. Right now I can speak English, Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese at varying levels (I put them in descending order of ability lol) and I'm planning on improving in all of them and learning at least 3 more. P.S. your presentation was so well done! BRAVO!!

I can relate to all this very much. Through a combination of being born and raised in Belgium (3 official national languages Dutch, French and German) and having worked abroad in different countries for most of my life I ended up ultimately learning 12 languages. I'm fully behind Lindie on pretty much everything she shared. Let me throw in my 2 cents: (1) Cross-language-learning is absolutely very efficient. Use it to your benefit; (2) Get maximum exposure to a language in many different ways: audio, video, print, and real life. There are always foreigners around the place you live who want to interact and share their knowledge of their mother tongue; (3) Never ever underestimate the factor language when doing business. Way too often the mentality in business schools is that English will get you everywhere. You might get far, but the person that can meet his/her prospective client/supplier etc. in his/her language will close the deal faster and better. Why: by speaking their language you meet people in 'their' mental world (of which language is a crucial part). Other things equal, you will always have the upper hand, regardless of how little you can talk or write in that language. People make decisions with the emotional part of their brain and then rationalize the choice (not the other way around). (4) By learning languages you do not only learn new cultures etc. but your cultural empathy goes through the roof which makes it easier for you to get accepted; (5) Learning different languages has the same effect on the brain as studying math. Your cognitive function goes way up. You effectively become more intelligent; (6) The more refined your language skills, the more interesting your life and world become.

As a non-native English speaker I always tried to incorporate English in my daily life in a way that I didn't perceive it as a task nor a chore either, but as something that I did cuz I enjoyed and did as a pastime, and definitely finding "language buddies" helped me so much and for some reason I've never really felt frustrated when somebody corrected me or anything, I knew that it would be beneficial for me, besides learning English has opened a wider amount of content on the internet as movies, videos, songs and etc... (Something that any language does) and I am so so grateful for that, so grateful for the insistence of my dad trying to convince me to study it. I am grateful for being bilingual. Another point is that I've never felt the need to keep learning more and more languages and I'm okay with it.

This was great! It's amazing how a passion and love for something can make you grow in ways you never imagine. Watching your journey has certainly inspired me to share my own, and it makes me hold on to the belief and faith that learning a language is possible. For some reason I used to believe you needed to take a class to learn and although that can help, it's not necessary because this really is a process and a journey. Thank you for sharing

Thank you for sharing this presentation. I've watched a number of your vlogs and find your passionate approach to languages inspiring. This presentation nicely tied together a lot of the concepts I've learned from your other vlog and gave me new ideas for my own language learning. On a side note, I just loved your slides!! It's clear you're a designer and not your standard Powerpoint presenter because those slides were gorgeous!

Lindie I just want to thank you so much for your openness about your language learning experiences, and how you emphasize that it takes time and enjoyment. I started learning mandarin several years ago, ultimately ended up putting it aside because of nursing school, got married right out of nursing school, had 2 children unplanned and worked overtime during the pandemic. I recently started picking up Chinese again and have totally fallen in love with it. I regret not focusing on it more sooner because I could have spoken much more fluently by now I am encouraged by your videos and how you say it's a lifelong journey. Thank you!

When I see some language learners, they always have goals like moving to another country or studying, and I never see the ones who just enjoy the process and do it for themselves, but I've finally met a person like that, like me, and It proves to me once again that my goal is also important and essential. Thanks a looot 💘💘💘😖😖l
