By the way, this clip is from 7 years ago, prior to my realization that I was mainly just eating the wrong foods! My extensive research led me to a Low-card / high-fat diet, which pretty much takes care of weight problems if one can stick to it at all. At the time of this chat, I was still eating oats and such. Can't believe it. No wonder I was struggling to lose weight, even with exercise. More importantly, ain't Slamfire a cute boy!!!!!! Thankfully, he's still ruling my life in July of 2024, allowing me to continue as his "servant." :-)

When I was in my mid to late 40's, I needed to lose about 70 pounds. I went on a "traditional low-calorie diet" and in 6 months' time, I lost a whopping 10 pounds, and my cholesterol and triglycerides were still way out of control. I went on the Atkins Diet (i.e., Low Carb & High Fat) and in 3 months-time without much exercise, I lost over 60 pounds, and lowered my total cholesterol from 309 down to 180, and my Triglycerides from over 400 down to 150. That was when I was in my 40's and I still had an active and working metabolism. Now I'm in my late 60's (pushing up on 70) and I went back on the Atkin's Diet, but this time I only lost 10 pounds in 3 months. "Reason?" Because my metabolism has slowed down a lot. As we get older, that happens. However, exercising helps to build the metabolism up, so at my age, if I want the same dramatic results that I had when I was in my 40's, I have to exercise along with eating the RIGHT foods. Strictly Limiting Carbohydrates (i.e., bread, pasta, sugar, etc.) is the absolute BEST WAY to not only lose excess weight, but to get your body to function properly and lowering blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose (sugar) levels.

There was a large multi-center peer-reviewed study over 20 years that showed that diet controls your weight and exercise has negligible impact on it. I had a bad back and started Atkins and lost over 60 pounds in just over 6 months. I feel great now and I will never go back. I too was a dog person for over 30 years and then our daughter started working at a vet clinic and when our last dog passed, she brought us a pair of sibling Norwegian Forest Cats and now we are dedicated cat persons. Unfortunately, our male died last year at 14 years old but his sister is still going strong and we have added several other rescues to our home to keep her company.

My favorite clip, seeing Slamfire. I have loved cats all my life. The best advice I got was regarding portions: "Eat breakfast like a King, lunch like a Prince, and dinner like a peasant." It makes sense - spend most of the day burning food and not have your resting body at night burdened with a heavy meal turning to fat. Also, I think weighing every day mostly records water retention differences & stomach contents differences: too little signal, too much noise. Once a week I think is more indicative of progress. But yes - the US has too many complex carbs, sugar, fat, and salt in so many foods. Unfortunately, cheap food is bad food and good food is expensive.

@MSDOGS1976 it's really hard to wrap your head around when you've been told your entire life that fruits and veggies are good for you. They are, but they can also be bad for you. Most modern fruit is loaded with sugar and your body converts that sugar into fat. I'm no dietician, so I can't really explain it, but I went Keto and lost 50 pounds in a year. I eat all I want! I'm talking 6 fried eggs and a half pound of bacon is a good breakfast for me. I had fried bluegill filets for dinner last night with Cole slaw. Keto works for me but I've never tried a true carnivore diet.
@thoreau5914
@thoreau5914 26 күн бұрын
@@MSDOGS1976 I was the same way. It is hard to believe because we have been lied to for decades. The food pyramid was developed by the Dept. of Agriculture to compel people to eat commodities that the Fed. Government was subsidizing. Also, the sugar and processed food industries paid off Harvard "scientists" to spread the lie that saturated fat caused heart disease, arterial plaque build-up, etc.. That is how the old "fat is bad, vegetables good" belief system began. Fruit (modern fruit that is) is loaded with sugar. Vegetables have nutrients, but they aren't bioavailable, meaning your body can't absorb them well at all. Vegetables also contain many natural toxins to affect your digestive and metabolic processes. That is a plants defense mechanism. Animals try to kill you before you eat them. Plants try to kill you after you eat them.

Slamfire is definitely a cutie! Congrats on the weight loss! After a couple of years of retirement, I went on a self imposed diet several years ago, limiting my self to 1200 calories per day and went from 256 to 160 lbs. That took about one year. I also started walking one mile every day to help maintain mobility. Maintaining that weight has turned out to be almost as difficult as losing it. Statistically, a man in his 70's should be able to eat 2200 to 2300 calories per day to maintain weight. Realistically, at least in my case, my intake is 1400 to 1600 per day. When people ask me how I did it, I jokingly tell them that losing weight is basically just teaching your hand not to have food in it every time it gets near your mouth. The reality is not far from that. I pretty much gave up fast food, and snacking all day. One truth that the experts have always pushed is that losing weight and keeping it off requires a permanent change in eating habits. That's 100% true. To all those reading this and wanting to lose weight, take heart. You can do it, but only if you truly want it and are willing to make a permanent change in your eating habits. The reward is worth the struggle. I feel better now than I did when I retired 12 years ago. I also feel a great deal of pride for my accomplishment when I see men who look the way I used to look.

I lost 60lbs 14 years ago and, like you say, had to cut back on my food intake. If you want to lose you have to commit to that. What also helped is cutting out desserts and sweets. I gained 20lbs back so it’s a continual process and effort.

You're exactly right about losing/maintaining weight. I too know from experience - I used to weigh 217 pounds and went down to 129 with a self-imposed strict diet (plus a few cigars). My best friend was a bathroom scale to monitor my progress. That was 50 years ago. Still weigh myself daily but now exercise a lot more and have a normal diet. Thanks for the video, your approach to weight control is 100% on.

I'm 68 years old and weighed 238 last August - more than I'd ever weighed. I started walking and eventually got up 2.5 miles every morning before eating anything. In January I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Had to take insulin for a month or two. I cut out all carbs for a while, and continued the walking, and my weight started dropping. Soon I was able to stop the insulin, and then the Metformin too. I am down to 194, and my cardiologist has taken me off blood pressure and cholesterol meds. Now I eat some carbs (small amounts but always with protein and lots of veggies). Zero processed sugar. And I drink nothing but water. Occasionally a glass of milk with breakfast. Docs always say it's all about diet and exercise. Well, I'm here to tell you that's 100% true. And you can do it too.

We do ketovore. Very low carbs, high protein, high fat, and intermittent fasting for us. We typically eat all of the food we are going to eat per day in a 4-hour period and it totally works for us as we are rapidly approaching 60 yrs old. This works better for us than anything else we have ever tried, and most of all it keeps us feeling better than we ever have previously.

There may be a little difference for some people. But really, it’s simple math. Burn more calories than you take in. I went from my leak weight of 230 to the 190 I am now by simply increasing exercise and activity and decreasing caloric intake. I didn’t get too much into the weeds of watching carbohydrates and fats and all the things that are supposed to be bad for us. I just cut down on the processed foods and started eating more beef. Increased my protein and I love fresh fruits. I cut down on the sugar drinks and drink more water and that was it. Diabetes completely reversed. I was able to get off of all of my blood pressure medication‘s. And at 60 years old, I feel better now than I did then when I was in my mid-30s.

It's all about your blood insulin level. Insulin control controls energy utilization within the body. Fat cells will not release stored energy when insulin is elevated. They will only take on glucose and fat out of the bloodstream when insulin is elevated. How does insulin get elevated? By eating sugar and carbohydrates. What does that leave you with to eat? Pure carnivore, all meat eggs and a little cheese occasionally. The only metrics that should ever matter are… How do I feel? How do I look? How do I perform? I can tell you're trying and I appreciate your content quite a lot... OK now I'm seeing your pin comment lol

I found intermittent fasting really helped with weight loss. Starting off, a good Greek yogurt can really help. Your gut biome needs to change. It drives carb cravings, and when you start tor educe carbs the die-off of carb-hungry bacteria will trigger strong cravings. The yogurt helps to replace the bad gut bacteria with better bacteria and the protein is satiating. Once you learn to pay attention to your body and how it responds you can take control of your eating *desires* by taking control of your gut.

I had a cat some years ago that never wanted to go outside (my other 2 cats always tried to escape) but one day she ran outside. We searched and called for her for hours. She was hardly larger than a shoe box so we couldn’t see how she could survive. One day, 28 days after she left, I went out the front door and she was walking to our porch. She had lost weight and was hungry, but someone either fed her or she found pet food outside. I thought she had died. My next door neighbor’s cat disappeared and she found that it had adopted another family not far from us. You never know.

Nice cat, I was mostly a dog person until my German Shepherd (shown in my avatar) died from cancer at 10 years of age. Since then I became a cat person because we also had 2 cats, now down to 1 a Nebelung who is very loyal and affectionate once she learns you are her best friend. As for weight I am 6'2" and during COVID wasn't going out and exercising much at was up to 237. A friend suggested keto diet and I did some research and decided to try it. Combining that with light exercise since I am retired, I got my weight down to 205 where it has been for some time. I feel much better and focus on eating good foods, little to no sugar and can eat plenty of meat with no problem. I will keep it up the rest of my life. I feel sorry for those people who think that some pill will cause them to lose weight while they don't change their diet. It is easy once you start on the right path.

For a male you need to be under 2K calories daily to take it off and 2,400 or so to maintain. That ain’t much, lots of vegetables and some fruit to satiate and that can be a voluminous intake at 40 calories a cup. If you can keep it at 1,500-1,800 daily weight loss will be significant at 3-5 lbs weekly. Get a moderate amount of exercise and hold yourself accountable.
